I may have the wrong impression of the game, but isn’t it in a constant war situation with centaurs? My point is that todays soldiers at war wield combat knifes to the field EVEN IF they have a 5.56 caliber gun over their shoulder/on their backs.
Its a great multi-purpose tool, and its great for close quarters and can be used as a bayonet (arguable… I imagine a gun is better, since you will spend time pulling the knife out).

So why can’t Engineers get swords/daggers? Or at least daggers? Sure they are a lot less effective, but I imagine a cool melee playstyle could be implemented if they gave us an option to combine a rifle with a dagger to create a sort of bayonet? Imagine stabbing a person with a blunderbuss then fire off with shrapnel shot (third skill in the tree? Sorry im new.)

Eh, just thinking out loud. Not saying they SHOULD implement it, and I am already satisfied with the engineer dual-pistoling, but its just a thought and the topic is mainly just for friendly discussion.

What do you guys think?

I could see a off-hand dagger work.

Main hand/2h though I don’t know, a mace or a hammer would make more sense

I didnt imagine that the Engineer would ever get the privilege of wielding a two-handed melee weapon though, mainly thought about one hand since I dont imagine engineers to be big burly and intimidating. . . This is also arguable when you consider that they carry huge backpacks not to mention FLAMETHROWERS CONTAINING FUEL. >_>

I would like a bayonette type thing to fight with, but that would require them to make new animations, which is a helluva lot of work.

At best the Engineer would get a Hammer for melee simply do to the nature of the class. .

Hammer would have to be one handed then… I can’t quite imagine them running around with a huge mallet on their back.

The toolkit lets them hit people with a wrench and a crowbar. That’s pretty fun.

I really think we need a melee option for engineers. The options we have are great, but it’s just missing something, and a melee weapon would absolutely fix this issue. Even if it were just a 1hander to pair with shield/pistol, though 2 hander would be better.

Engineers are engineers, not soldiers. A combat knife wouldn’t have anything to do with the engineer style. We already have the toolkit for melee, it just needs to actually be viable.

Engi is not a trained soldier, we just kinda strap on our gear and head out for adventure. So we wouldn’t be carrying combat knives.

I don’t think comparing a fantasy game and real life situation, is a good way to go about designing a game, IMO.

Engineers in this game aren’t ‘professionally’ trained soldiers like Warriors and Guardians are, they’re just inventive individuals with a streak of wanderlust. This doesn’t apply to the Charr as much, because basically every Charr is a soldier on some level.

However being said, argument can be made that the Engineer has some real life inspiration, traditionally combat Engineers carry close range weapons for person defense. This is reflected in both weapons sets that require you to get close for maximum damage. Personally would love to see another melee option, besides the tool-kit, failing that tuning the tool-kit would make me happy.

If we’re going to have a mindset where things have to make sense to the LORE, then it would make a lot more sense for an engineer to be equipped with a sword/dagger than a gun. Why? I imagine flintlock pistols and a blunderbuss is far more expensive to a street child struck by wanderlust than a dagger or a sword. I could imagine it would be possible for nobility born folk, but as I said this is if we were to make sense out of the ECONOMY.

(Again I take roots to the real world in comparison, my bad folks)

Anyhow the argument that an engineer is not a trained soldier is false. Only a fool sets out on an adventure without some kind of insurance that he can handle hardships. When do you see a non-combatant wield flamethrowers or flintlock pistols turned flamethrower? Not to mention a blunderbuss. They are all weapons a trained soldier would use and you need experience to use those kind of weapons. You can’t just pick up a tool and instantly know how to use it, and a gun requires more discipline than a sword to use it in a proper way (Safety-wise).

Okay I make a lot of references to real-world experience, but I work in the army and launch F-16’s daily, and I do mostly maintenance work, and even I am trained in combat situations. So real-life comparisons is kind of inevitable for me, I apologize.

It’s implied Engineer’s build their own tools, and in the Charr Iron legion story, directly refers to this being the case. And everything else beyond that point (lvl 2+) is found/rewarded for your services.

An individual does not need to be trained in how to use a firearm to pick it up and use it to moderate effectiveness. If you want to get real technical, compare the stances between an Engineer and a Warrior when they use the rifle, one fires from the hip, the other from the shoulder. That would indicate some level of training or at least awareness of how to use a rifle properly.

Beyond that Warriors/Guardians are referred to as ‘soldier’ classes, where the medium armor professions; Ranger/Engineer/Thief are considered ‘adventurers’. Unless your backstory dictates it, adventurer types aren’t considered professionally trained soldiers. That being said a peasent warrior from the streets of Divinity’ reach has no formal training either. Regardless, the implication is there.

Finally I’d be willing to hazard a guess people go out on hazardous journeys all the time without formal training and survive, maybe even do really well with themselves because of it. Pistols turned flamethrowers, wouldn’t really have a training course, the Engineer built it XD

I think you should be able to upgrade Utility Kits. There should be an unused upgrade slot sence we can only use one weaponset that is replaced with the utility kit while used.

Kudos to you for being a real-life military engineer, but it should be obvious that that is not the archetype the Guild Wars 2 Engineer is meant to portray. Having cobbled-together “gadgets” and elixers with random effects plants it clearly in the realm of the fantasy “crackpot inventor” or even “mad scientist”—clearly a hobbyist in any case.

It’s not an issue of what makes sense given the presumed history and training or some nonsense, it’s an issue of it not matching the clearly established style of the class.

Main-hand torch to go with our offhand shield. Melee-ish weapon like the shield.

Skills:

  • Chain attack:
    - 130 range single target damage, “strike your foe”
    - 130 range AoE damage, “swing your torch”
    - 450 range AoE damage, causes burning, “throw your torch burning foes each way” like http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Throw_Wrench
  • 130 range single-target melee skill that deals damage and causes daze.
  • 450 range single-target leap attack.

Honestly, I’d just like to see the Engineer’s current melee option, the toolkit, actually be good enough to see regular use. I pretty much never see anyone using the wrench. Maybe after the current options are a little more balanced, adding more would be a good idea.

I don’t know what war you are talking about. Soldiers are not issued bayonets on their M4/M16/M249/M204’s in Iraq, nor big fighting knives. Any knives they bring, they bring on their own accord. Unless they are issued a multi-tool for opening cans. Which is what my brother did with his big, expensive combat knife that was given to him by a worried friend.

Engineers at best should have a mutli-tool that hangs around their belt… but never used in combat.

If anything, they need a H2H option. Which is what soldiers are trained in as a back up to their pistol.

Well rifle, bomb kit, tool kit, flamethrower, and grenade kit are all pretty much melee range.

While I don’t disagree a 1h mace / 1h sword or a 2h hammer wouldn’t be awesome, we already have a ton of melee options.

Personally I would rather see more ranged options aside from grenade kit. Pistols are more mid ranged than long range, and the few long range abilities on rifle / elixir gun don’t really cut it.

I personally want to see a rocket kit or something with 2-3 fixed target abilities at a 1200-1400 range.

Similar to warrior rifle in it’s ST focus.

But it might be a while before we get any new weapons, kits, or skills. They’ve got to fix the broken / unused traits we already have first!

Agreed, while a mace or hammer would be thematically fitting imo. The Engineer already has tons of short range abilities, I’d rather see more long range options. As you said the few long range options on the rifle/elixir gun really don’t cut it.

I can see mace, making it in to some sort of stun baton would be in character.

As said above though, Engineers are already spoiled for short range combat. We really need some more long range kits before fretting too much about short range.
