I would expect engineer class to excel in building things such as seige machine in WvW. Perhaps GW2 can buff engineer class to be able to carry more than 10 supplies? Or perhaps have a long cooldown spell that can build ANY seige machine in one cast, basically no limit on supplies carried (we still need blueprints though).

Come on, unless you are a financial engineer, engineer should be able to build things better than other class. Agreed?

I consider my own engineer to be a mad scientist running around with experimental future gadget inventions that are highly unreliable with unknown effects and drawbacks to their pros.

But yeah I guess your suggestion works too.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s such a big deal. The class needs FIXES more than changes.

For instance, talking of WvW sieges…Engineer has Mortar. But it sucks. Needs fixing.

Area denial? Engineer can build a ton of turrets, performing various tasks. But they suck too. Needs fixing.

Etc., etc.

Once turrets scale, target and track properly, mortar doesn’t perform worse than grenades, etc., the class will be just fine and fit the role well. And Devs, on the off-chance you’re reading any of this, I do NOT mean “nerf grenades”, not until you fix the rest!

They live up to their name sufficiently well. The problem is, they do not live up to your expectations. There is a grand difference.

Why would you expect an engineer to build anything? Much less excel at it? You appear to have some odd idea that engineer is synonymous with construction. That is not the case in the least.

So you ask the question “agreed?” and the answer is no. Welders, woodworkers, machinest, equipment operators, and others of the sort are the ones that build things. You simply have a misunderstanding of what the word means.

Poor craftsman blame their tools. Poor players blame their Engineer.

Thematic i understand your point, the guy whos able to create explosives and flame thowers and mortars should excell at building other tools of war (npc engineers are often found building tanks and helicopters or bombs etc). But i must assume with this strength over other professions we’d have to carry over a weakness…so…for balance sake i think i can do without this.

Well depends on your idea of the Engineer. Its sort of the mixed result of several sort of types. The tinkerer with the gadgets and gizmo’s. An Alchemist, with the elixirs and all. A typical Engineer, with turrets and toolkit. A grenadier/demolitionist with the bombs, grenades and mines.

The Demolistionist and Alchemist seem to work. Tinkerer blends in a bit with either of these two since its not that fleshed out to begin with.
But the arch typical engineer (wrench and tools as weapon + building drones and turrets) just doesnt work. Turrets are bad due to a range of problems and reason and the toolkit isnt great either and in general the Engineer isnt a profession that can handle wading into the thick of battle, not with turrets + toolkit atleast.

Maybe have a elite skill upgrade of Supply Drop which also provides a few pallets of WvW siege supplies? Or a elite skill that performs a super-charge upgrade to an existing siege weapon so it has better armor, life and deals more damage?

Well for me engineer is about “leonardo da vinchi”/reneisance like inventions, or gadgets that you usually see with witchhunter characters and elixirs work for them just fine.
Thats why i dont like theme of engineers here, with mostly world war 1/2 weapons rather than interesting, fantasy inventions.

all is vain

Before any nerfs go into the equation for Engineer, Anet needs to fix the bugs with skills first and foremost.

@op – As a scientist irl, I poke fun at engineers at being the oompa loompa’s of science all the time…they don’t agree with me (or you) apparently.

My engineer is a former soldier (grenades) turned drive-by/gang fight expert (dual pistols). Now that I think about it, my engineer rushes into battle with dual pistols blazing, then chucks grenades like a mad man. Not even close to what an engineer is o.O But hey- I don’t really care :p

I actualyl agree. Considering we are supposed to be Engineers, we cant even modify or upgrade the Turrets. Or his own weapons.
Besides, we cant use a lot of weapons “because we are not skilled” ? What the hell? We can use a flame thrower but not a sword? Thats stupid.

In WvW, I found that my grenade build to shine during an offensive siege. I can pretty much knock-out, kill or force defenders away from any part of their battlements. I wish we had some Haywire-Grenade which would disable siege equipment on their walls for a short time.

On the flip side of the siege, I find it very hard to find a spot to drop several grenades before getting a beat down. I find a spot on the wall outside of the LoS of the enemy and drop a Mortar. If it’s a small-medium siege force, I found if I launch the AoE knock back on a group of them, it can sometimes break the siege. However during a full blown siege push, the moment I get 1-2 shots off, the mortar will quickly be covered by long range AoE so I have to abandon it. At this point, I usually drop the mortar and run as a diversion slightly away from the action in a highly visible part of the wall to draw some of the attackers to it.

I’m loving the flamethrower during large ground assaults. Sometimes you can swing around and attack their flanks with flame and you can cause them to retreat back. You then hold your ground with sustained flame attacks, burn down their knocked out allies while the rest of your group revives fallen allies.

Flame thrower is a good AOE and gate defense item. With the invisible bug still plaguing WvW it comes in handy to find your opponents.
One thing i do notice, having rolled a number of characters. The Engineer is total weakling compared to other classes. they do less damage and speed is greatly reduced. and because they can only use medium armor take tremendous amount of damage quickly. Yes they have a bunch of elixor’s to drop but you can’t equip without taking away something that is needed.

What definition of "engineer does the profession not live up to by the claims of those of you stating they do not live up to it?

By what metric do you make this measurement?

Anet created the GW2 engineer, and what defines it. What definition of “engineer” in game have you found that contradicts the class? I am an engineer, and at this moment I work with a new tire development group that designs more effective and efficient tires for one of the largest tire companies in the world. So yeah, by that definition, my in game engineer does absolutely nothing defined by what I do as a engineer in real life. By no means does it mean the engineer profession does not live up to its name.

This is Anets, GW2 engineer, defined by them. Not as defined be every individuals single idea of what an engineer is by definition.

Poor craftsman blame their tools. Poor players blame their Engineer.
