(sorry if someone has said this already) Anyone notice on the trailer that the engie drones blink different colors…blue, red and green.

Maybe they are just buffs….

another idea i have(could have been talked about already, sorry), each drone is a bar of defiance…..

what are your thoughts?

They’ll probably either be representations of the new Utility skills, a product of the Elite Mechanic, or something the Hammer creates (like how Mesmer weapons create illusions, say, perhaps).

They’re unlikely to be bars of defiance (players use stability, after all, and I don’t think I’ve heard anything about that changing) or buffs, unless the buff is unique to the Elite Engineer, and I can’t really imagine anything like that happening.

Then they’d better actually be useful, first off. Personally, I doubt that they’ll be Minions (given that we already have Turrets, and Turrets get treated badly to begin with) and Spirits is right out, given the theme of the Engineer being ‘no magic.’

So, they’d have to be a whole, fresh skill type…which is also unlikely, given that, as of now, I have heard of no new skill types or weapons being added. Additions seem to be ‘this class is lacking a thing in this department, let’s see what can be done,’ after all, so far.

Really, I’m just going to lean toward the Elite spec’s new mechanic being the drones, in some way, given that the Engineer already has a minionlike skillset, though I’m not sure what skills are likely to be added. Guardians get Traps, Mesmers get Wells, Necros get Shouts…maybe it’ll be Survival, Tricks or Deceptions, or maybe they’ll decide to throw in Signets or some other magical thing for reasons, and the drones will be the passive/active for that. Who knows?

Unless the trailer “cheated” to make the Engineer part look cooler, they are not minions.

Just playing devils advocate why couldn’t they be spiritish types?

Like the example Jortakk gave, they are attached to the character model, and follow him as he moves.

Personally I think they’re going to be like probes like WildStar’s medic class. They can heal, buff and do damage.

That would make the most sense.

Personally I’m almost convinced that they are either:
a. Mantra’s: They do nothing unless charged and when charged gain X amount of stacks.
When pushing the button again they perform their active, like spray dots, deal damage, give out boons/restore health/endurance and after their stacks are spent they explode.

Traits could include a blowback/damage component to their destruction and since they’d count as mantras they are not bad AI that can be murdered.
Most of the boni of these drones would be selfish baseline but traits include their effects working like auras or party benefit.

b Signets, providing a passive bonus while not active and summoning a drone (either for a long time or a short burst for a shorter duration) giving boons, protection from or breaking cc, increasing damage and the like.

Traits then could make drone passive effects work while the drones are active, give boons on drone use, reduce cooldown and duration of effects.

Would be a boring choice over the mantra kind in my opinion though.

I made the mantra skill line suggestion in a different thread myself and I really hope it turns out to be true. It would be different and interesting enough to make me try it, and has the most potential to convince me using it over an additional kit.

If they are indeed mantras, I hope they somehow incorporate a shared charge system. Since all drones looked identical, they could all be the combined charges you can store, and you choose which mantras you spend them for.

Just to dispel some of the “Engineers don’t do magic” myths out there.

The main staple of Asura is magic used in a way that combines it with their own strange sense of technology. Still, a golem runs entirely on magic, and so do Asuran turrets, and their entire floating city.

The Pact’s main technology staple is Magitech. It’s based on the pure Iron tech of the past, back when the game came out and it was the main understanding of (steampunky) technology. With the creation of the Pact and with the Aetherblades, a majority of Tyrian technology runs on a mixture of straight up steam tech and magical influences from the Asura and the other, non-Charr races.. Hence, Magitech.

Would an engineer just use a direct signet gameplay wise? No! That’s a very direct and standard way of using such magic.

Would an Engineer infuse a drone with signet type magic, running on either steam tech or complex magitechnology? Yes! It’s a creative way to use traditional magic, modern technology and a personal flair.

Plus, we’re getting magitech pylons, magitech rifles (predator, pact fleet), a toolbelt asura magic laser, as well as our straight up explosives. Not to forget elixirs emulating traditional magic in a bottle.

Mmmm engi currently has few viable non kit utilities because they are stronger than normal like Slick Shoes with good tool belt skills, I would expect the same if drones were signets and don’t have to be play with a full set of them, I see it as engi/guard war got taken by necro.

Where are you getting that the Mortar Kit wouldn’t be able to crit? It can already crit now, and all kits can crit, so…?
