So… i feel like engineer sucks in sPVP? Am i just not doing this right or does it really suck??

I feel the engineer thrives in my PvP experiences.

I thought the same when I first gave the Engineer a go. It takes some getting used to and requires a lot higher apm than most other classes, at least for kit heavy builds. From my experience, if you can play Engineer well, you’ll have the mechanical skill to play anything.

If you prefer more complex gameplay, Engineer is a lot of fun and the class is just as good as all the others once you’re familiar with it’s mechanics.

There tends to be a rotation of players complaining the Engineer is OP, then a few days later, maybe after people try to jump on the bandwagon, players complaining that the Engineer is terrible.

Pretty hilarious.

It’s apparently common for most players to feel that way, but I assure you they are very efficient and effective at what they do, which is a little bit of everything. They have their short comings, one of them just happens to be a high learning curve and a strict demand for understanding not just Other Profession mechanics but the basic game mechanics as well. In short: I would consider it an advanced Profession.

Actually the opposite, sPvP is almost the only place you’ll see condition builds outside of WvW roaming. Condition are terrible for PvE because of the stack restriction due to server performance issues.

Consequently, this is possibly why many people consider conditions OP when they enter sPvP, having not experienced condi builds in WvW, especially where AoE cleanse is spammed for near immunity, they expect to get away without taking conditions into consideration.

Rabid and Rampagers amulets are available for condition builds. Check http://intothemists.com/ for build guides.

Here is my favourite build, although the december patch will kill it, so I have been playing around with this in preparation for the upcoming changes.

Except it was an honest question from a new player…

To the OP: yes, engineers take quite a bit of practice before they start feeling powerful. Hit me up in game if you want to see how a few different builds work and how to start to get a feel for them.

Condition builds are probably our best in PvP right now, usually with bombs, grenades, or both. We do very well with rabid amulet because of all of our conditions (condition damage), the Incendiary powder trait in the explosives line (precision procs that) and because we have good healing (toughness compliments healing well).

A good build to learn on is HGH grenades: it’s 30/0/0/30/10. Take incendiary powder, enhance performance, and grenadier in explosives, all the elixir traits in alchemy, and speedy kits in tools. Use elixir H, B, and S, as well as grenades and two pistols. It’s probably not the absolute strongest build we have, but it’s effective, plus it’s a good way to get comfortable with grenades, kit swapping, etc.

Some of the best players I have ever spectated in PvP play engineers. It takes a much higher degree of muscle memory and skill utilization along with knowing what to do in a specific situation in a pinch. Engi can’t be facerolled and still be successful, my opinion.

That is a thread from a well-known forum troll. There are not any top teams that have taken a bunker engineer for about a year now. But yes, engineers are in a good spot in PvP, it’s just for a person completely new they’ll feel weak for quite a while.

Know troll by who? Where is his troll level registered? I have to ask, because I do not know him to be a troll. I mean, for all we know, he stole your girlfriend in high school and your holding a grudge.

As well, you do have a history of making claims about what “top” teams do that prove to be inaccurate. If your that in tune with what the top teams do, I am curious, how many of the top 25 teams have engineer? Who officially ranks these teams in the top 25? What roles do their engies play?

NevirSayDie is one of the most level-headed people I have ever seen on these forums. I would not call Lordrosicky a “troll”, but rather someone quick to play the OP card when it comes to certain things.

Why are you so defensive anyway? I am not sure how much trouble other engineers are having in PvP, but as Nevir said, engineers are in a good spot in PvP.

Yes, “troll” was maybe a bit strong. Didn’t mean to toss out accusations, just warning people not to take the thread too seriously. There are other threads about bomb/nade engies being too strong, which are much more accurate and well-reasoned.

If you read through the thread, you’ll see replies such as “eh he makes a thread like this every week” and top players saying “bunker engineer isn’t even viable, let alone OP.” That’s all I meant, didn’t want to be throwing out an accusation.

FML uses 1-2 engineers (usually just one). Their builds are carrion bomb/nade and a special burst build
Chaith, who runs power/control nades. Umm, usually plays for GF’s tournament team I think.
There’s also JinDaVik and Ostricheggs, who have played on various teams.
Let’s see…quilja plays a bomb/nade build. Vvv if I remember correctly.
Hiba often runs burst engineer builds for [yumy].

And there’s probably several that I’m leaving out. The top teams aren’t hard to identify, because there are weekly tournaments as well as pretty accurate team leaderboards.

Check his posts / threads in PvP forum. I’m not saying he’s a troll, he might be posting all that stuff genuinely after all. From what and how he posts I can see how he can be considered a troll by some people… And that is excluding his other two accounts.

Top 25 players? Looking at NA leaderboards I instantly see 3 Engies – Steamhawke (#5), Woodstock (#10), and Jin (#19). Don’t recognise anyone one EU (which is sad as I play on EU).

Top 25 teams? How to judge them? EU teams, ESL week #5 finals – Team Eclipse – Jin, Engie (condi, p+s, rabid, bomb, nades, elixir gun, home bunker + mid support + occasional far decap). NA teams – Vision, Valor, Victory – Steamhawke, Engie (power, rifle, soldier, nades, thumper, mines, node fighter, far assaulter).

There’re many more, this by far is not a comprehensive list.

Edit: not sure about many, there are few more at least.

This was point exactly, he claimed there are no engineers at all in the top ranks that bunker. Hence my questions. Your post re-enforces my point by suggesting that there are.

All I did was link a thread to an opposing opinion thread for the OP. Immediately my post was attacked with an attempt to invalidate it by insulting its OP.

This issues combined are why I asked the questions I did. To see if anyone else disagreed with the blanket comment that implied engineers are weak bunkers, when my experience plus my views of a team or two using them as bunkers, disagreed with.

I feel like this is getting off-topic. I posted saying that I agreed with you that engineers were in a good place in PvP, I just didn’t feel comfortable with the specific thread/build used as evidence for that. No one is overreacting, let’s keep it that way.

I also tried to explain that the OP is a new player, and engineers often feel weak to new players because of the rather high skill floor. In other words, this isn’t a qq thread that needs to get debunked, it’s an honest question that I was attempting to answer clearly.

Well I wasn’t gonna name drop but since you already did…

Woodstock is incredible. His muscle memory, map knowledge and general engi knowledge amazes me to the point I am embarrassed when I play my engi. I don’t recall the others but I do recall another engi that was also incredible. Will have to check out these two (Steamhawke and Jin).
