Hey,

Have been on about an 8 month lay off and decided to get back into GW2 so rolled an Engineer. I like WvW so have been running their a fair bit however I feel like the engineer is hitting like a wet noodle at the moment! Also I seem to get melted pretty quickly, tend to get in a massive health deficit quickly then have to try and scramble to disengage before having another go.

Currently at level 40, is engineer weaker leveling up? or is gap between people leveling at established 80s quite large now?

Cheers,

The problem you’re probably seeing is you’re facing full geared 80s, compared to your blues/greens at 40. They will have much higher stats and also full trait lines. I wouldn’t say engineer is weak leveling up, but I wouldn’t say you can survive zerg fights at lvl 40 either unless you’re careful. If you intent on staying in wvw to level up, I’d suggest making sure your gear is as close to your level as possible.

Engineer doesn’t have proper access to stability since like week 3 when they clusterkittened juggernaut and never put stability back in any worthwhile form. This makes engineer hard to play and very hard to level in wvw. Your cc options are largely worthless against people with stability, and their cc options are great against you when you lack stability.

Though it may be more fun to level in WvW vs PvE, I find it’s full of frustration. First off, unless you can find a karma train leveling is painfully slow. Even with the karma train I estimate it’s about 5 times slower! Since you’re going to need to be in a karma train (unless you want to be leveling for many months) you’re going to need to do as much burst as possible in the relative safety of range to get maximum credit. This is all indepenent of profession.

Specific to the engineer, this probably means a power build with ranged combat, i.e. rifle and grenade kit. And since you don’t really start to make an impact with grenades until level 60 (grandmaster trait Grenadier), well let’s just say Good Luck!

Well the mid levels are bad for WvW it seems like to me with any class, the scaling they use is poor at those mid levels, once you get lv70 and above with decent gear you will do better, although I find the Eng my weakest WvW guy to DPS with.

To all of those who think WvW is a training ground…

Please… GO BACK TO PVE.
We care about actually winning the WvW, and your selfish desire of riding on a train of leveling will make our server weak.
Yeah, maybe you can outplay some lv80s that’re unbelievably bad, but that doesn’t mean that you’re good.
I can swear to you I have never lost to anyone who has a green up level sign (meaning they’re not lv80 and is scaled up) 1 on 1.

Beside, WvW does not train you as fast as purely “exploring” maps. (Ignore vista and poi, just go for WP and skill point is enough).
Also, crafting is way faster of leveling about 30 levels with a relatively low price on cooking, jewelary, and artificer.

Last thing to note, judging a class strength when your gears, traits are not nearly close to complete is completely unfair.
Engineer is strong in WvW at level 80 and provides alot of pressure power and heals to the team. It also has good mobility with 100% uptime swiftness and vigor, as well as rocket shoe that can help you escape many situation.

If you die as an eng in WvW alot, it is not the profession’s problem, but your own problem instead.

Unless you’re rolling in a karma train, wvw is really bad for lvling. Much better to go to Queen’s Pavillion and pop an xp booster, goes much faster.

If you want to lvl quickly by doing PvE go Queens Pavillion OR do every 1-15 zone.
You can do 15 lvls in each zone pretty quickly on higher lvls. Much much faster than in WvW.
For example: taking tower will fill 1 maybe 1,5 bars of XP. But one heart in PvE will give you approx. 0,2 of whole bar. So you need to do few quests, do every dynamic quest while running in map and You will be on lvl 80 in 6 hours.

I leveled an engi in wvw from level 7 to about 45 – not easy but fun and makes things easy for you in pve. Yes zergs are rough but keep your gear green/yellow and you’ll be fine. Flame thrower for gate defense/assault is awesome.
