Engineer or Ranger?
One gimp or another? Hmmm, really hard choise ^^
Both classes are lack of the developers love since release, so, you decide...
try to choose Elem, Warrior or Thief - they are good as is. And the new love of the devs - Guardian.
Seafarer’s Rest (EU): Liicher (Engi), Lii Cher (Warrior), Swf (Elem),
Licharr (Guard), Lich Eir (Ranger), Alt Fh (Thief). Lii Cherr (Mesm), S Wf (Necr)
PvP perspective:
I have been playing a lot of engineer the last couple of weeks. This was the last class i tried because everybody said it was the weakest. They were so wrong. Engineer has one of the better elite skills and can use kits, which replace your first 5 skills with different skills. In most builds you will run with a lot of different skills so pulling off a combo can be hard.
so for the pro’s and con’s
Pro’s
+ Versatile
+ Very good damage, both condition and power builds.
+ Most fun to play
+ Most rewarding if mastered
+ CC gods
Cons
- Small mistakes ruin u more then any other class.
- Hard to master (could be a pro)
- Turrets make the engineer a, well, a engineer. however turrets are weak.
I haven’t played the ranger a lot but im gonna try.
Pro’s
+ High damage (also because of pet)
+ Fast, lots of evades
+ God tier elite skills (entangle)
Con’s
- Low damage in melee ( looks like this is my opinion, dont flame plz :p)
- Not versatile
Remember, i only play PvP. For PvE i can’t help you.

We have good elites? Where? Did I missed something?
Supply crate is good, yes. But mortar SUCKS, it’s highly situationel, you might use it 1 time in WvW standing on a wall, but even a striketeam will smash it to the ground in 10 seconds.
Elixir X is just bad. We have to rely on the RNG (but hey ’it’s fun’ right?).

Supply crate is very strong in PvP, cant argue about that.

Engineer
Pro’s
- We can deliver every conditions in the game
- A lot of crowd control
- A lot of different build
- Fast paced fight, really few casting delay.
- Kit swapping is really interresting.
- Good burst on some build.
- Can be a roamer.
Con
- Can be really hard to play.
- Few useful build in tPvP.
- Lower damage taxe for being versatile, which we aren’t really more then any other class.
- Kit mecanism without CC breaker
- Turret are non viable.
- Not sure Anet know what to do with us.
Ranger
Pro’s
- Good kitting class.
- Pet are independant from stats → You can build tanky ranger and still have good damage output.
- Good variety of pet.
- Traps ranger are awesome.
- Good Farming class
- Top class in tPvP meta
- Best condition removal trait
- Nice traits stats disposition
- unkillable underwater
Con’s
- Gasmeplay a bit boring → You auto attack a lot
- Low burst, as pet is half your damage and aren’t affected by gear.
- In WvW, pet die a lot, removing a lot of DPS.
- Pet are buggy
- Downedstate is buggy
- Some bad weapon (ex : off hand axe)
- Non fotm build are really weak.
- Not a good dungeon run class.

probably more experience with ranger then me xD

Engineer:
- We can deliver every conditions in the game
Not "all", but "many", and Necro will do that a way more better and faster
- A lot of crowd control
What can be really easy to avoid
- A lot of different build
mostly useless and youself confirmed it in the "cons" part
- Fast paced fight, really few casting delay.
Nothing special, look at the thieves of d/d elems
- Kit swapping is really interresting.
at 1st day. All other time it’s boring
- Good burst on some build.
not "some" but "two" or even "one"
- Can be a roamer.
as every single class
- Can be really hard to play.
Not "can" but "will"
- Few useful build in tPvP.
not "few" but "two" or even "one"
Ranger:
- Pet are independant from stats ? You can build tanky ranger and still have good damage output.
Yeah, with the "glass" or "two-hits" pet, cool
- Good variety of pet.
Yup. But only 2 or 3 are useful
- Traps ranger are awesome.
maybe for 1vs1
- Good Farming class
What? O.o
- Top class in tPvP meta
Yet top
- Best condition removal trait
What? O.o
- Nice traits stats disposition
So-so. There is way more better classes in that - thief, for example
- unkillable underwater
Strange argument. 1st is "not" and 2nd is "Underwater - only 5% of time"
Seafarer’s Rest (EU): Liicher (Engi), Lii Cher (Warrior), Swf (Elem),
Licharr (Guard), Lich Eir (Ranger), Alt Fh (Thief). Lii Cherr (Mesm), S Wf (Necr)
SilverWF -> I shall then give you more information about my argments, since you felt the need to try to counter each of them.
We can deliver every conditions in the game
Not “all”, but “many”, and Necro will do that a way more better and faster
We can deliver every condition, depending if you count fear as a condition or not. It is listed as a conditions, but at the same time it’s a CC countered by stability and CC breaker. I didn’t count it.
Anyway, doesn’t change the fact that we can deliver every other conditions, all 10 of them.
Necro are really good with conditions, but they are more about conditions manipulation. I think it’s safe to say that if only necro are superior to you in conditions, you are in a pretty good place. Also necro can’t directly use the burning and confusion condition.
A lot of crowd control
What can be really easy to avoid
How is that an argument? Our overcharged shot is as hard to dodge as any other skill. Same thing with throw mine or personal battering ram. We also have slick shoe stun that can be crazy if used at the right time.
Thief get crazy when you ping pong them around the place.
Sure you can counter it with stability, but every abilities in game have a counter.
CC is a big advantage of engineer, and I have no issue using them, ether in WvW or paid tPvP.
Fast paced fight, really few casting delay.
Nothing special, look at the thieves of d/d elems
d/d elem? Churching earth? Elem have a lot of cast time. Sure they have instant ability, like everyone else.
Go play your necromancer, then come back on your engineer. You’ll see what I’M talking about.
Kit swapping is really interresting.
at 1st day. All other time it’s boring
I still love it. It’s a taste thing then. When I switch to my alts, I miss the possibility to swap kit.
Good burst on some build.
not “some” but “two” or even “one”
Do you expect us to have 10 burst build? 2 is a lot in the current meta of the game.
Can be a roamer.
as every single class
Not every class are good roamer. Necromancer, will good in a group vs group fight, have 0 combat mobility. If a group of 5 encounter a zerg, the necromancer won’t escape. When hungting a zerg with an Engineer, just equip slick shoe. 90% of people won’t be able to get you. You have also stealth, jump shot, and a lot of immob/cripple, bomb kit, Big ol bomb.
Can be really hard to play.
Not “can” but “will”
Not all build have a really high skill cap. I don’t say it’s an easy build, but HGH have a lot less skills to memorize and time. Build that have no kits tend to be easier then kit heavy build, especially since KR change.
A lot of different build
mostly useless and youself confirmed it in the “cons” part
We still have a lot of room for theocrafting. I personally love making new build even if they aren’t viable, only to test new thing. My cons is about high level pvp, not about build possibilities.
Ranger:
- Pet are independant from stats ? You can build tanky ranger and still have good damage output.
Yeah, with the “glass” or “two-hits” pet, cool
No. BM bunker Ranger pets are far from being glassy. They are the FOTM ranger build right now with traps. They are really hard to kill, and they won’t die from AoE.
Good variety of pet.
Yup. But only 2 or 3 are useful
Still add many possibilities.
Traps ranger are awesome.
maybe for 1vs1
They are among the best 1vs1 class, and still can be a pain if used like a staff necromancer in a group fight. They have a lot of combo field for team play.
Good Farming class
What? O.o
Ask all the bots they were running Ranger as a farming tool.
Top class in tPvP meta
Yet top
They aren’t DD Elem, but they are right next. Majority of High level paid pvp team run at least a ranger.
Best condition removal trait
What? O.o
Empathic bond used to be the best condition removal in the game. I forgot about this patch nerf, but it still an awesome trait. Add with this some build that use Healing Spring, and they can be really hard to stack conditions on.
Nice traits stats disposition
So-so. There is way more better classes in that – thief, for example
Thief and Ranger nearly have the same disposition. Some bunker ranger build are really efficient because they also have a really good conditions damages.
unkillable underwater
Strange argument. 1st is “not” and 2nd is “Underwater – only 5% of time”
I didn’t say it was huge, but that still good to know. Once you use #3, most people won’t be able to finish you.
Overall I feel like you are very negative about everything, especially about your engineer. After reading your post, I’m wondering why you even play one.
Have a good day!

My two cents as someone who just really has scraped the surface with engineer (have mostly played thief, necro, warrior so far) – they are pretty cool and interesting in general – the kit mechanic is very unique and can make for a lot of dynamic gameplay – a lot of options. If you played ranger in gw1 and are looking to try something new I think engineer is worth taking a look at.
Really, to decide on what class you want to play long-term, the only way to figure that out is to play them all, get a feel for their playstyles, and only you can decide because everyone likes different things – I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. Of course, a different question to ask is what is viable in high-end pvp or wvw or fractal dungeons or something like that- which is a different story – obviously all professions/build have their strengths and weaknesses depending on what you are looking to do with them.
Also, I would honestly ignore SilverWFs comments because they just sound like a lot of kitten to me without a lot of objective comments on the matter. No offense dude but you come across as straight up whiny and it’s not helpful to anyone.
DDog and Kardiamonds posts seem a lot more objective and based on experience instead of feelings – better.

Man, I see - you will arguing like hell now.
Just two upper points:
1. Fear is condition. Condition without a lot stacks or huge long - nothing. You must know that. But, sure, this can not be spoken in the forum-fight, lol
2. So, rifle#4 - "a lot" ? Another utility skills using very rarely and, sure, not in the our two-left-cool-builds. And, sure, you can’t have it all at the same time or change in battle etc.
So, since your 1st points beaten, I didn’t even want to read another. GLHF.

If honestly, I really didn’t care about words of some noname. No offense man, just a fact.

I disagree about the fact that conditions are only good in a large stack or long duration. If i can apply 4+ different condition with a little downtime before i can use them again will also do a lot of damage and is harder to get rid of by the enemies.

Is that how you defend your points? By saying thing without backing your facts?
You can stack an average amount of bleed, near perma poison, near perma burning, some good chilling, better then average confusion, perma weakness with EG, perma vuln with grenade, lot of immobilize, cripple and blind.
Sure it’s hard to keep all this up, but good rotation can pull it off. If you think it’s not enought, I don’t know what to say.
About CC,
We have #4 rifle, big ol bomb, tumper turret, every turret if traited, shield 4, personal battering ram, slick shoe, throw mine.
I think that’s pretty much the higest amount of CC option a class can have in this game.
And did you say you never use rifle #4? That’s prolly the best attack on the rifle. And 100nade is still viable, and static discharge isn’t that bad ether and use it.
I have the feeling you arg only to args.
@Fall
You might want to try each class in sPvP (acces to all skills) to see which one you prefer. It’s not about the class forces, it’s about the fun factor.
If you need any help, whisper me in game!
Good luck man.

Licharr (Guard), Lich Eir (Ranger), Alt Fh (Thief). Lii Cherr (Mesm), S Wf (Necr)
I have both. The Engineer is far superior.
Ranger is only good in tpvp because people are forced to stand on points, and thus traps are effective.
Everywhere else, rangers are garbage. Their damage is garbage, half of his damage is the pet that dies to a sneeze in fights greater than 5 people, and the pet is single target. The engineer has way better cc and better utility besides being better damage.
Just understand this: ranger’s class mechanic is what the developers of this game have been the least competent at — AI/minions.
Honestly every single thread, ends up in a discussion ‘does engineer suck or not?’.

I don’t PvP, but in terms of fun factor for PvE:
— Engineers have a lot more variety. People on this forum will argue that it’s all meaningless because X is broken and Y is underpowered and grenades are hard and so on. But the truth of it is, you do have a lot of options which all will work, to varying degrees, and which all can be fun depending on personal preference. Kits mean you don’t even have to switch gear or builds to do something different from one fight to the next, and that does a lot to keep PvE interesting.
— In a typical fight, rangers are slightly less boring than Warriors. Warriors are slightly less boring than watching paint dry. In a more involved fight Rangers can be kind of fun.
In every MMO I play, I have serious alt-itis to the point where I don’t really have a main. Right now I have one of everything except a Warrior. Ranger is my lowest level because it’s not that interesting. Engineer is my second highest even though I started it last.
