Engineer uses over other professions?
You’re sadly misinformed.
Engi has one of the highest potential damage outputs in the game. Literally only Ele/Thief can top them and that’s only in some situations. If you rotate correctly you’re looking at, for example ~30s fight about 17.5k on Ele and 17k on Engi. An Engi will beat a warrior, especially a phalanx strength one, and it tops thief on paper also, it’s really only due to a simpler rotation and synergy with Ice Bow that they may come out on top in a practical consideration. (condi engi actually has the highest dps potential at 21k on a longer fight, though I don’t know anyone that’s completely mastered that rotation)
You’re missing out kicking Engi’s, now there’s LOTS of bad Engi’s so your’e probably saving yourself to a point, but dismissing their abilities in PVE is simply foolish.
Engi can do almost all the stealthing needed, only a few situations I can think where a thief is above them by enough to worry about (Arah p1 pathing, a few areas in CM, and the long Harpy skip). Engi can also contribute a great deal of might (6-12 stacks, possibly more depending on build, including 25 prefight stacking) and Engi has the some of the best sustained vulnerability in the game (only other possible contenders have much weaker damage while doing so).
So don’t brush off Engi so quickly. Again, doing all this takes someone who really knows their profession, and since it’s true that they aren’t optimal in most situations people have often done the same thing you are and simply ignored them. So you don’t find many good Engi’s but the ones who know what they’re doing… well, there’ about as good of an addition to a group as you can get.
As for your initial question. What role does Engi fill? Well, whatever role is needed. Of course if a thief is in party I’ll just contribute blasts in his smoke fields and not worry about setting up my own stealths. If I have a PS warrior I won’t tweak my rotation for more might and err on the side of damage output. But, if we lack that stuff I’ll have my bomb kit and Elixir S ready for stealth skips, and I’ll focus on blasting my fire fields. We can even handle reflects in different situations, sometimes just with flamethrower, sometimes mixing in Elixir U(though that comes at a loss in DPS and honestly isn’t comparable to mes/guard, but enough to fill in gaps when you’re relying on other professions or even those two if they play poorly).
So, don’t be ignorant to the potential Engi has, if you still feel like kicking them because most are bad, ok, I can understand, just don’t think their potential isn’t worth taking.
I am mostly a pve player, doing dungeons/high level fractals and i will never bring a engineer in my group, i insta kick engie’s from my groups (no hard feeling but it just can’t compare to dps against say Ele/Warr/thief and have no way near the utility and usefulness of a guardian. As a matter of fact Engie’s/Rangers/Necros have no place in dungeon/fractal parties and mesmer’s have very limited/situational use.
you should feel bad for doing this. i have literally never done a fractal without an engi in the party since their debut in the game. i have nearly 400 pristines and i was level 30 by the time anet changed personal reward level entry requirements. i have multiple different people who ask if i would like to come along for 50s nearly every day, depending on who is on, and yet i only rarely do not end up pugging 1-3 spots. and the majority of my runs are by no means bad.
abandon your prejudice and perhaps you will have a new, fun experience. a bad player on any class is a far bigger detriment to dungeon progression than even a mediocre engi who simply keeps doing things but never autoing.
head here to discuss wvw without fear of infractions
For spvp i love my ranger and mesmer, both have great dps, good survivability and lots of utility, i never ever had a problem against an engie 1vs1 in arena, doesn’t matter if i am holding or attacking a point.
I don’t see how this is -not- an attempt at trolling.

Me either. You literally stole the words from my keyboard on this one.

Just as I was going to type something, I finished reading the rest of the replies.
I didn’t read other responses, but!
if you’re kicking or not allowing experienced engineers on correct meta gear for pve dungeons or fractals you are without an ‘elitest wannabe’ or a random ‘no idea scrub’ because engineer is a fantastic class for instanced content, unless you’re a wanna be elite group then sure you might pass up on engineer, but seriously engineer is an amazing class with some of the highest damage and overall utlity available.
Missinformed and a self proclaimed foolhardy elitist.
Engineers utility is on par with Guardian. Smoke fields for invis and blinds, fire fields for might stacking, a few reflects, although not as many, condi clear like guardian.
DPS is just below thief and ele, not as much burst, but dps is extremely consistent.
This is a troll post right? maybe? If not why bother posting here? Most of the people on this forum are long time engineers who generally loathe people like you. Peeking at your post history I saw another post like this within the Necro forums. Other post talk about how much ascended gear you have and how you have all your toons geared. You didn’t respond to the topics you started so I am going to assume you are trolling us.
Now shoo.
Wrekkes-Engineer Kore Rok Thief-Asraithe-Ele
I don’t play in Ranger or Necromancer in factorial, so I have no idea what they bring to the table. What an Engineer brings to the table is effective and consistent AOE Cleavage in both PvP and PvE. No other class can bring the consistent AOE that Engineer has on their belt; even more so with the 3-5 target-per-skill use-limit.
Where Engineer really shines are situations like the final boss of Volcanic Fractal: Legendary Grawl Shaman. Where you need to hit and kill multiple target fast or lose.
Unfortunately, Engineer have a harder time turning off their AOE pro-ness and have a much harder time in situations like Cliff-side Fractal. Situations where you want certain targets to survive.
“consistent AOE Cleavage” mmmm nice mental picture
It’s everything said here – engi is aweseome, anywhere.
Ppl just hated them for the bad players out there. But then, there also still exist bearbow rangers, condi necros, full signet wars, gs mesmers and staff guards in fotm and dungeons (even with “enough” ap to no longer be a newb) so … make sure to kick them too
