Q:

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone could help me understand something bizarre that I have noticed with engi’s, it seems some of them when you get them to around 20% health stop taking damage… I’ve had this happen a few times and today in a game vs 3 engi’s 2 of them had this exact thing, they drop to 20% really fast and then they stop taking damage… I even used dual arcane skills at the same time but health bar didnt budge. It seems to last around 10s. We even had 3 people beating on them but they dont take damage, nothing on their buff bar no special animation.

The only thing I can think of is the immune to condi’s below 25% but were doing power damage not condi.

If anyone knows any hint as to what this is that would be great.

We have a trait which makes us drink an elixer s at 25% HP, which makes us invulnerable to damage for three seconds.

Thanks, but that is not what is happening. There is no elixir S on the buff bar and they do not go small. It also lasts longer than 3s.

If it isn’t elixir S then they must be blocking. No other engineer skills exist that can accomplish what you describe, and there are no known bugs that can replicate that behavior either.

If they were blocking they were using the shield attack from tool kit. Or if anything, they could have been dodging and using smoke bomb to blind all of your attacks

Hmm, I didnt notice any blocks, the only thing I say was “Immune”. I forgot to record the game but maybe my team-mate did. I didnt see any miss spam but it did last longer than a smoke bombs duration.

As I said, I seen it happen before this and wrote it off as something bizarre but this time it was 2 engi’s on the same point multiple times in one game.

Could also be that you were trying to stack conditions when the Engi had traited condition immunity below 25%. Any condition damage would be shown as ‘Immune’ in that case.

I have seen my own health bar, when I heal, seem like it stayed in place. Basically the health lost is replaced by health gained. That and a block might get you to 5 or so seconds. Was it 10 seconds or just “a really long 6”? I know in PvP and in RL tournaments that 10 seconds is FOREVER and I’ll often think 2-3s is much longer. If you are confident it was 10 then I’m at a loss of how it was done.

When you automatically drink elixir s with trait at 25% you don’t always shrink. If that procs and then they drink the real elixir s you can get 6 seconds, then you can block twice with shield and with toolkit for another 5 seconds. So thats a full 11 seconds of no damage thats possible. Potentially longer if it’s ranged projectiles you can pop magnetic shield for 3 second reflect.

It was more than likely one of the above cases and you just didn’t quite notice what was going on.

I think this is the second time this particular thing has come up. Only explanations I’ve heard have relied on the person doing the attacking trying to lay down Conditions like a madman. If I’m interpreting the reference to ‘dual arcane skills’ correctly, you’re referring to the Arcane skills the Elementalist has, which, for those unaware…don’t do conditions. Just damage. Lots of it.

If they were using a blocking skill, then it would’ve brought up “Blocked,” besides, instead of Immune.

To my knowledge, there is no Engineer ability or effect that could possibly have resulted in an Immune response to non-Condition damage (power damage is what you called it in your original post). Certainly not for ten seconds.

Hmm ok thanks for the responses. I think I will just have to get it on camera. I was hoping other people had noticed the same thing. With one of the times I had it happen I didnt see any damage numbers only saw immune pop up from time to time but when I looked in my combat log I saw that the dual arcane skills actually did damage to him…

I know it sounds crazy, I am so sure that its not elixir or block(I woulda seen block spam). It’s why I made a post because I have no idea whats going on, its also why I didnt make a post the first or second time… It’s so weird. If I get a clip recorded or my team-mate has the footage from today then I’ll upload and re-ask the question to see whats up.

It sounds like it’s the condition-immune trait below 25% health—that’s the only way an engineer can give the “immune” message. Elixir S gives “invulnerable” and only lasts for 3 seconds—although theoretically the trait and the utility could be popped back to back. Block is obvious, and we don’t have any other skills or traits that make us stop taking damage.

If I had to guess I’d say someone was re-applying conditions and there was less direct damage going on than it felt like

Was this in WvW? I’ve heard there have been some glitches that cause damage immunity for a few seconds reported.

I play an engi and have also fought against engies on previous toons. Also witnessed this behaviour. It was kinda what made me continue levelling my engie(curiosity). However I’ve still no idea what causrs it. Never managed to replicate it on my engie. I dont think anyways. I usuallly an focusing on trying to stay alive at that syage.

Yeah Churick, I saw the footage from my team-mate from that game and the engi’s health was just going up and down rapidly, I just glance at the health bar midfight so I must of just seen the health everytime it was up and not when it was down. Either that or it was some sort of lag thing. My internet is really jittery.

Perhaps it is latency due to culling issues, that the engineers simply are not rendering in the form elixir s creates. Thus the effect occurs, but the graphics of it do not.
