Enigineer has no role..
this thread again. the engineer’s role, like most other classes, is to dps. i keep hearing this jack of all trades thing. yeah it’s true to an extent. we can do pretty much anything but the whole point of traits is to specialize in one area. and our damage is competitive with other classes even without ascended stats on our kits. i think what throws people off is grenades spreading out the damage numbers. like you’ll see three smaller numbers from one attack instead of one big number so people are like omfg engis 0 dps.
Not only can our damage be competitive, but we can increase the party DPS by 25% through 25 stacks of vulnerability quite easily. You’re not sure the engineer has a clear role? I think it’s abundantly clear. And that’s only one thing the engineer does -and does well. There are many others.
Engineers are better field generators and manipulators than any other single profession.

Oh boy, I have so many roles.
1. Fields and Combos
2. Confusion and Blind
3. DPS with COMBINED power and condi (so I am never a one trick kinda damage)
4. Pulls
5. Cleanses for team (e-gun fumigate)
6. Light field plus ability to blast it several times (for area retaliation).
7. Glue (bomb, e-gun, pistols sometimes)
8. Knockbacks and decaps
Just because you have a lot of roles doesn’t mean you can’t be very good with any one role at any one time.
Engineers have a TON of blast finishers and fields. Since many PUGs don’t bring enough blast finishers or don’t might stack properly, I usually bring around 6 blast finishers + fire and smoke field to keep the party at 18+ might stacks and stealth when needed… not to mention the vulnerability stacks. You say that engineers have no role, but in an unorganized group they’re probably one of the best classes to have.
I don’t understand the idea behind the “what’s are role” question in general. With elixir infused bombs and healing turret, we are efficient healers, or even tanks. We have multiple melee or ranged damage dealer builds. Our ability to be a CC specialist is vast. We have an expanded list of fields we can create as well as many finishers for them.
It is not a matter of “what role” the professions is or is not. It is a matter of what role you build it to be.

IMO, engies are the most versatile class as you can create different builds with different utility skill combinations. It’s role is not of the trinity, which i think why people think it does not have one. In a group setting i find myself setting up bombs and traps to manipulate enemy movement and put them at a disadvantage securing stomps for our team. We have lots of CC and i think we should be using it. Engineer class screams of UTILITY.

*vulnerability
*cc

well not only DPS
bunker build is good at frontline support with infused bomb (cleric full set) can heal 300+/bomb aoe heal + HT water blast (remove 2 cond + massive heal) or EG #5 for retalation and #3 cond removing
its the turrets build who is useless now
static turret in wvw is a pain when u need to tedonate every time for run to another place and if get some incoming u got all turret on CD
atm we got 3 build available for engy
- conditions build (with or without elixirs)
- bunker build for support
- SD for long ranged damage (sure granade got 1500 range but to slow)
if Anet want us to make build diversity, we need some improvement on turrets and gadgets

Wow, I think you have to be crazy to believe we only have 3 builds. There are 3 or so very different condition builds alone.

kite like a mother kittener, bunker, and do burst.
though to add to the builds thing, been playing a static discharge build, (still kinda new to engis but) it seems to do a lot of damage with nice survivability.
We are the perfect backup utility player. You just need to keep one player up and you have fields, stealth, blasts, heals/water, cleanses etc. Another may be better, but we can do it all. That means if the engineer is up, you have an ability to react often to a bad situation.
Bombs deny area.
Our heals are quite good
We can cleanse a team that over reached well (and survive many times)
We have lots and lots of fields and finishers!
We are the second best class at stealthing a party which is wickedly good for stomping or reviving.
The trouble with the engineer is that a lot of our utility scales with coordinated play of parties. I drop smoke for just a few seconds and your blasting it with me provides a really good stealth. I drop water and you need to time it right to blast. That is quite hard for casual groups to master.
I love hearing:
“Need to stomp these guys” (smoke screen time)
" Need more cleanses on me" (Fumigate)
“Get a light field here” (Super Elixir)
“All condition damage on my tag”
“Need more water” (I have one of the fastest recharge water fields)
“RUN” (Nothing like blasting a smoke screen to help others get away)
Plus, I carry 4 blast finishers at least. Now if only I could get them all off in time!

right
i correcting it on adding 3 Type of builds we can run atm
condi, bunker, and SD
Engi Dmg is super high when running grenade kit, bomb kit and a rifle. I can hit 4k auto attack with bomb kit, full zerk no might stacks, thats more then warrior axe. Grenade auto attack can be pretty weak, i hit around 2.8k so don’t rely on that. no.2 and no.4 massive dmg, and your f skill is amazing!
We do have useful support with our heal turret, AoE heal and condi removal. Also nice fields for stealth, weakness, might etc. As an Engi remember to be creative, don’t limit yourself to what other professions are doing, we are special in the way our imagination increases our ability on the battlefield.
Amazing CC, best CC in the game infact, AoE immo, AoE Blowout, Knockbacks, a knockdown that follows our path which works really well in group fights. AoE blind fields. Blind is so useful against thieves and warriors, infact anything that can do massive burst dmg.

3 builds lol
do you even play engi
My HGH engi fills many roles very well and is very valuable to a team:
-I AoE cleanse conditions from my allies while buffing them at the same time.
-I offer pretty decent mid-ranged damage with high close-range burst with my rifle.
-I can AoE rez down’ed players from a range with ElixerU, OR use ElixerS to stealthRez/rez while immune.
-Elixer engies have a reflect wall(though on a higher cooldown than a guardian’s)
-That same skill also has a chance to be a smoke field, which makes melee enemies cry as they do no damage.
This is just a single build; engineers have no less utility than other classes, we are NOT a bad class for the team(Rangers).
I don’t get why the engineer needs a ‘role’ do begin with. It’s the same with ele, people don’t seem to get that in order to play them well, you don’t need to focus on a single thing. In fact, like the ele, it’s probably best if you don’t focus everything on 1 tactic. Engineers aren’t warriors after all.
In bomb builds, engineers have the highest AoE dps in the game. On 3 targets it’s less than a cleave warrior and FGS elementalist, but on 5… nothing else comes close.
Shoot stuff with your rifle, as they approach turn around, run, and drop bombs. There isn’t a single melee champion you can’t solo faster than any other class.
Of course, as AoE is the natural counter to stealth, this also makes engineers the ultimate anti-thief class.
Engineers also outdamage rangers at 1500 range applications with a traited Grenade Kit.
Then lastly in terms of utility, the number kits available makes engineers second only to elementalists in terms of how many different things they can do for party support within 10 seconds.

granade dont got auto atk and all got a slow and predictable land
sure granade is a good kit if u want make a large scale conditions on a zerg/blob
if we can got some improvemente on landing granades, we can go at same of a longbow ranger
It’s not ‘the same’, it’s 15% more damage if all grenades land.
The trick is getting all of the grenades to always hit. No problem for zergs, no problems for bosses… somewhat more of a problem in normal applications.
We do have a role – vuln application – and we do it faster on our own, max stack at that, but we’re overshadowed by FGS, since any other class with vuln on crit traits can max stack with an untargeted rush 4.
Does it bother anyone else that this poster pops in out of know where and make this troll post/thread that seems just stupidly controversial, then never post on it again? Those posters are not asking a genuine question, or do not have a real opinion, they are just trolling.
at 1500 range ranger arrows are as easily dodged as engineer grenades.

I wasnt trolling, tbh i was about to post a reaction just now when i read yours dancingmonkey!
I was QQ ing maybe yes :P
Dont understand me wrong, i love this class but sometimes i feel im not needed unlike when i play guardian for example. I was hoping my fellow engineers could/can convince me WHY this class is actually unmissable.
Im reading all this, learning how other people that are enthousiatic about this class look at this class, and perhaps motivate me again :P
Yeah grenix I just think you hit a plateau. When you lose a lot vs. 1 or 2 classes, or you don’t really feel like you’re getting dps in like a warrior, cleansing and buffing your allies like a guardian, doing group stealth like a thief, or even bringing awesome spritits like a ranger, it’s easy to feel like we don’t specialize. The problem I think is that we forget about a lot of the skills we have when we look at other classes and the mechanisms that define them.
A big thing I know we have is vulnerability stacking in PvE. We also have tons of soft and hard Crowd Control that makes boss kills and ganks a lot easier. I could go on but I’d say track the comments of Bombsaway and Chaith for real, deep answers. There are others on this forum like Phineas Pho, Adamantium, insanemaniac, ellessee, etc. Some of us are gruff but we’ve been around the meta block so to speak.
Also watch vids of engineers that do well in WvW and sPvP and see what sets them apart. You’ll get past that plateau. You might still have trouble with certain classes, or get down about your own group contribution, but you’ll start to see more opportunities to really stand out as an engi. People thank me all the time for my might stacks in dungeons and the vulnerability, or my blind fields. Or that sweeeet res I got with a long range toss elixir R at a Lupicus fight. Stealth reses are pretty helpful too in PvP and WvW. Watch teldo vids for great PvP and teamwork and check out reddit for the rest I guess!
The engineer is a primary AOE damage dealer and area denialist- the engineer is BAD at being a pick class, and VERY BAD at solo fighting, but works well with a group of other classes. Roll out damage, be it direct or condition, plus has a pocket area heal with his heal turret, which grows in strength for every turret he has available. An engineer only really has hope in a small fight (1v1, 2v2, etc) if he has time to prepare and initiate.

Bad at solo fights??? I doubt you will find very many who agree with that in the lease. The engineer is one of the most feared 1v1 fighting roamers in the game.
so I main/mained elementalist. Tried out the ranger ankitten ow doing a ton of pvp on the engineer. Used to go grenade condi but now I got rifle zerker. 2k dmg on auto attack, grenades doing 1.6k direct dmg while proccing more on crit stuff. a burst of 15k dmg and being able to chain cc people without missing out on amazing mobility… Quite frankly the engineer that I run is all that the elementalist used to be and more.
Combat is never boring, damage is rewarding. Just need to figure out how to support allies and how to do the blast finishers and such though.
