Q:

What is the purpose in a trait that

Release a barrage of grenades when you take falling damage. Take 50% less damage from falling.

Sure you take 50% less damage but how often are we Eng falling off of cliffs and such where need a barrage of Grenades? Best us I can think of is maybe sPVP or WWW

Anyone one have other thoughts on this trait

A:

Crazy good in wvw.
Does it let you survive jumps off cliffs that would normally kill you? if it does, that alone in wvw is amazing. so many shortcuts.. I mean, 3rd floor of SM. does it let you jump off from trb location that would normally kill you?

but even just jumping off walls, keeps etc. jumping down on flame rams, etc.

Used solely for the 50% falling dmg. The grenades effect is for a bit of flavor – could potentially compromise a flanking maneuver, however due to the noise.

I think all Professions have a talent similar to this, maybe?

It’s pretty much just there for jumping puzzles if you’re invested in the Toughness tree. I think the designers know it’s a gimmick, and it’s just there for perilous leaps out of combat.

I can see it being used in jumping puzzles… I suppose.

But no real application.

Almost everyone has a trait like this. The extra effect sucks for nearly every class, it’s really only good for taking shortcuts in WvW and other hilly areas.

would be a great talent if it triggered on a knockdown like i used to think it does.

It needs to use the Big’Ol Bomb effect rather than Grenade Barrage. The problem with Explosive Descent is that while other classes also offer fairly useless effects, absolutely NONE of them end up aggroing everything around them, something that tends to be very bad when you’ve recently lost 75% of your health from falling damage. At least with Big’Ol Bomb causing knock back, we’ll have some time to get up and react as opposed to getting killed after being knocked down from the fall.

Rangers and thieves are the only ones that don’t do damage with their impact, and they might pull anyway. I can’t remember if non-damaging CC pulls aggro.

Big ol’ Bomb or Smoke Bomb would make a very nice replacement.

All Professions have a theme of abilities that they all share.

“On fall damage”
“On revival”
“On down”

Every class has a “On fall damage” trait. Engineer does not have a “On revival” trait, while Warrior does not have a “On down” trait.

By “On down” I mean a trait that will improve you going down in someway. Whether a boon for yourself, a damage increase, or a damage taken decrease.

By “On revival” I mean a trait that will improve you or allies when you are reviving somebody. A spell that activates, or some boons for you and the person revived.

On that note Explosive Descent is very nice in WvW. I was expecting PVE terrain to take advantage of this, but no PVE zone constantly has fall damage. It is nice for jumping puzzles though.
