So i just made an engineer and so far im really liking the class. Quick question regarding the flamethrower which i am in love with, because well an asuran running around burning everything is one of the greatest things ever and i really like the skills for it, but it is it really all that viable in pvp and wvw later on?

I run 3 kit perplexity with flamethrower, elixer gun, and bomb kit. Flamethrower is good for blind, naplam, and knockback. Not so much the other skills.

i am with you Sir Warriant, i love the Flame Thrower. For most of the content in game you can play whatever you want. The flame thrower damage output is kinda on the low side and is more seen as an utility kit for CC/control.

For pvp its the same thing. People tend to ignore the flame thrower because the main attack is low damage and is 10 tick… which tend to get you killed if the other player have access to retaliation boon.

So yeah, i often play with flame thrower just because i like it, its the most amazing weapon in the game for me but… If you want to do high fractals, speed runs with zerker group or get far in spvp, usually the Flame thrower is not welcome there.

Apart from turrets and some gadgets, I would say most utilities available to engineers are viable in PvP right now (this includes the Flamethrower). We have the most build diversity I’ve seen since the start of the game. So, don’t restrict yourself to things others have deemed viable, play what you find enjoyable (especially while leveling).

Some advice though: 90% of the time, auto-attacking with the flamethrower is the wrong thing to do. This is actually a general rule for kit engineers— a consequence of our comparably bad auto-attacks and access to many short cooldown weapon/kit skills.

I use it often in WvW, mostly for zerg fights where I need to tag as many bodies as I can and then collect all the lovely bags The FT on its own however is not good. Actually, that’s pretty much the same for all engineer skills. You need to cycle through a lot in order to get some burst damage. I often roll with med kit, tool kit, elixir gun, and the FT. Those three work very well together. My usual attack is to drop the flame wall using the FT. Run up and use the acidic blast from the elixir gun. This will give you and your allies a might boost + add more AOE dmg. From the distance, toss your FT napalm blast and and the same time charge in with your flame jet. This will cause a huge spike in damage by the time you close the gap (usually fatal for PvE mobs). When you’re close, switch to tool kit and prybar the enemy, then switch to pistol and add static shot for more confusion. FT works best when you free shoot rather than target, but for static shot it helps a lot to target before using it, so I often toggle and untoggle targets during combat to get the most from my weapons (lots of finger play!).

This setup also has lots of healing power, so it just keeps me going. Med kit heal + deploybale medkits, antidote for condition removal, elixir spray toolbelt for regen + stun break, and super elixir for impact heal, regen, and condi removal. If you add backpack regen, that’s an extra ~140hp per second on top of regen. Since I roll with Celestial, I get a nice boost my healing power.

As for retaliation, it depends. In one on one fights, it’s obviously a disadvantage so you want to switch things up until the retal depleats (when in doubt, prybar!). If you’re defending a fort and spraying through the door, a couple retal isn’t going to ruin your day much. Just put down the heals and you’ll do enough damage to the door crashers that you both have to pull off in the end. From my experience, it’s rare to see a zerg roll with a lot of retal. Even if they do, there’s enough necros on both sides to level the playing field so you don’t notice it (or it’s the last thing you’re worried about).

It’s got great utility: aoe blind, knockback, reflect, long fire field, decent burst skill.
Super long fire field = plenty of might stack blasting.
It won’t top dps charts, but thankfully we don’t have those.
It works great in conjunction with EG as a utility/support build that can still deal quite good damage.
It’s suicide against retaliation, especially against a group.
It’s great for tagging events.
If it’s tons of fun, keep it up.

I also love the FT.

On pvp is not that good, as others said, mostly due to retaliation.
But on dungeons, on a power build, it can be great.
I use a FT migh stacking SD build and think the dmg and utility is great.
I can stack 25 might with ease and do great burst and sustain.
FT has a good range for dungeons, you can stay just out of most of the aoe circles, and still reach the target without worring about reflection.

The fire field on the FT lasts for quite long, so you can easily use your 4 blast finishers on it to give 12 might for the team, and then change to the med-kit to give 3 more while getting some fury for yourself. With the FT this will give you constant 25 stacks and keep around 20 stacks on the team. It also keeps a good ammount of vulnerability on the target, not as much as granades, but still nice. And while you are building stacks you are still putting out nice dmg with SD.
