You can also hit them with grenades or any other ae really, it’s not limited to just the engineer skills. Not sure whether it’s intended!

I noticed this a little while ago and its great for defending gates as well. You can put out a ton of damage to a ram/people bashing the gate and also use the knockback move as well. Good if you need a couple of seconds for gate repair.
I wish we had the old trait, engineers have almost no reliable way to get stability now, where all other classes do. Flamethrower is a ton of fun, it’s a shame they’ll probably fix that bug with the gates before they actually fix the flamethrower itself.
flamethrower is the only thing that gets its full range through the gate.
You can hit pretty much anything within range of your flamethrower through the gate. Even air blast them off the gate
ALL other professions do NOT have reliable ways to get stability. Don’t fool yourself.

Some are better at it, and some are worse at it. We just have to deal. What the Engineer had with the Flamethrower before was straight-up OP.

Anyone want to post a build for a WvWvW oriented Flamethrower build? I’d be interested in trying it out. The little I have used the flamethrower in WvW it has always felt to short range to accomplish much. Yeah you can shoot through doors, but I’m generally to squishy to stay that close to a door for long with all the aoe going on. ANd forget open battle getting close enough to use it. That’s suicide.
Flamethrower is really only useful for its 3/4/5 abilities.. which is kind of sad. More of a utility weapon than damage.
Be very, very careful trying to use flamethrower on a gate.
Evidently each of its 10 hits procs retaliation separately. So if they are stacking it ( and some groups will, to use their bodies to kill siege), you can do an inordinate amount of backlash damage to yourself in very short order.
I seriously lost like 3/4 my health in two shots trying this the other day.
We technically still have a reliable way to gain stability: Elixir X. :p
Yes, I tried flaming through gates yesterday, and immediately died twice from retaliation. Luckily there were more people there to revive me, and after that I got a bit more careful.
Retaliation is a nice player mechanic for solving “shoot thru door” issues, making it risk vs reward as it should be.
I really like the flamethrower, but like anything else it is just a tool to be used when the situation allows it. Too many have a tendency to see the rest of the world as nails when they have fallen in love with the hammer.
But that said, the lovely feeling i get when ever i do get to use the flamethrower can best be described like this:

The range on flamethrower is just slightly more than even the large AE, so this would have been a nice option. The retaliation thing kind of kills it though.
Not a fan. The range is limiting with no intrinsic defense.
Its a high damage weapon kit. but forces you into melee. It scales off crit/power. And forces you to spec into crit/cond damage for juggernaut. Then you need to go into inventions, tools or alch to get some defensive moves to actually use it.
So if you build defensive enough to actually use it, your damage is compromised.
condition damage tree is not bad for flamethrower at all. the flamethrower (due to the nature of the main ability) will proc alot of vulnerabilities and bleeds thus it is not wasted. the free might stack will enhance both the damage from your conditions and from the flamethrower. the bleed will also automatically give you another free 5% damage boost from “target the maimed”. take “deadly mixture” and superior engineer runes and you look at 25% free damage boost before vulnerability stacks.
vul only effects direct damage. and same with the 5% target the maimed.
Flamethrower is far and away mostly direct damage.
Well just as you can hit them, they can hit you. Even siege will hit you thru the gate. But that is something that needs to be looked at.
Currently I am running a rifle / ft hybrid build that I like a lot.
its 10 30 0 0 30 (although I might swap to 10, 30 0 10 20)
I use a mix of Berzerker and rampage gear. I have ~47% crit ~2000 power and ~500 + condi unbuffed with a solid amount of + crit damage.
It lets me hit fairly hard with FT 1 /2 and have burns that tick 500+ with strong bleeds. When I use the rifle I can still crit above 4k with blunderbuss and 5-6k with jumpshot on soft targets.
My utilities are typically healing turret, FT, rifle turret, elixir S. I play around with rifle turret though. I sometimes swap in bomb kit or tool kit.
You can do some nice dps with FT and build might stacks and then switch into tool kit / bomb kit or to rifle to do some nice burst damage.
Bomb kit works really well since you get a lot more out of the confusion as you would in a power build.
