Flamethrower - PVE/Leveling?

Is this viable? I like the idea of melting face, but I’m not sure which runes to pick up for all this to work. Lvl 26 right now, and I have a lot of fun with the Elixir gun, but would like to try something different.

Bombs and Grenades are not my friend – I just don’t like them.

Any help for a flamethrower build/spec would be appreciated. I tried looking, but all I find are old builds, with the trait system coming in at 10, so I’m getting confused.

Thanks!

FT in terms of damage is absolutely worst option you have no matter what build you use. But it can eventualy help stack might for other kits but lets be honest in PvE Ft dont worth a slot.

Everybody likes the idea of melting faces. Unfortunately flamethrower tickles instead of melts.

Get speedy kits first.
The new trait system kind of screws engineers over. I think we can get speedy kits at 30 now when before it was 20.
Put points into firearms after getting speedy kits for juggernaut if you really want to use flamethrower.

I can understand why you don’t like grenades, but why bombs?

dungeonwise, i settled on this after having tried various things. just remember to flame blast/detonate all the time.

i’m inclined to say rifle is best for (open world) levelling, simply due to the (single target) control inherent in it. but if you don’t mind dodging around a lot, flamethrower has fair enough aoe (and obviously, you’ll still have rifle sitting for control situations).

A stopwatch will tell you why there are no up-to-date builds for the FT :P

From what I’ve learned about Engi so far, FT is used for pve zerg tagging (‘endgame’), for breaking through blocks/blinds due to its high rate of fire (pvp) and for killing yourself to retaliation (wvw)

are the only viable builds necessarily the ones with highest dps? i mean, surely there are other considerations than damage.

Sadly, at the moment this is exactly the case in PvE: DPS > everything else
If by saying viable you mean that these builds can be used for map completion or dungeons, sure there are a lot of “non dps” builds that can be used for this. It will just take more time to finish.

Another reason why FT is bad for leveling is the new trait setup. For FT to deal even moderate damage you need 2 master traits = lvl 48. Bomb kit on the other hand is good enough to be used without traits (deals more damage than fully traited FT).

yeah, all mine were 80 before that patch hit, so i haven’t had to deal with levelling. i just remember stuff from when i ran around back then. grenades (if only it wasn’t for that carpal tunnel syndrome inducing useage!) almost seem safer to me, due to the added distance, but bombs put you uncomfortably close to enemies, no?

Grenadeer is now restricted to lvl 80 characters, so grenades are out of question for leveling.
As for the close combat with bombs, one of the most important things to learn while leveling is when to dodge. Also there’s the smoke bomb and glue bomb should you get into trouble. If you’re not comfortable with this, even running in circles while dropping bombs works for most of the npc enemies (even champions).
Larger bomb radius is a very convenient trait for all of the above options and should be second on the list after speedy kits.
But most of the times you won’t need it as bombs really melt faces. Gather up to 5 enemies, drop fire bomb, blast it with Acid Bomb (EG #4, drop kit mid flight), Jump Shot, Blunderbuss. Anything below veteran should be dead by now – if not continue with bomb #1, add Smoke Bomb for defense / EG #5 for heals if needed.
Rinse and repeat.

P.S. If ranged damage is really required, you can just use rifle.

well… assuming all enemies are melee, or can be LOS’d…

and yeah the elixir gun is fun! i just found it less useful in dungeons.

Use FT#1 to tag as much crap as possible in zerg event. You can use FT#4 to lay down a fire field that only you will blast.

I find power based FT builds to work fine. 2 scales with power kittenedly. And when you have 25 stacks of might you do hella damage regardless of what you use. And getting that might on FT is really easy. I have yet to try a jug→kit swap build but im sure it works quite well tbh. Sit in FT while waiting on bomb/toolkit cds and get free might, seems cool to me.
