I just pull it out for the AOE blind, AOE knockback on short CD or the number 2 (which you can aim manually and blow up for 5k+ hits in groups of people). Unfortunately, it is normal. Yeah, retaliation and flame jet is basically like asking for suicide. Kinda annoying, especially since everything we could process by making use of the fast attacks got nerfed (incendiary powder, crit foods). Now it is more harm than good.

For a flame throwers/burning based build, do you wanna go condition damage or power/crit?
If your goal is the burning then of course you want condition damage…I run a bit of a unique build for WvW bc in team fights I feel like conditions get cleansed way too much. Any condition damage I get is just bonus damage (although the combo of it is still pretty nasty when you’re also putting out good direct damage). My guild loves organized 5-20 man fights against big enemy groups or other organized teams.

Well…it’s great -_-…retaliation damage is the same when you do 8k in 1 hit and 100 in 1 hit…wonderfull…it’s too difficult set the damage of retaliation based on a percentual of damage taken..

It’s no different than other multiple-hit attacks (of which there are a lot in the game).
Given the cone-nature, it sure hurts though. :S

For burning-based build, I would avoid FT all-together just based off the nature of the auto-attack. If anything, it’d be better to not bring FT at all, use Flame Torch, Bomb kit, or hell you could even bring turrets instead. At least all of the mentioned don’t use rapid auto-attack, so they won’t kill you with retal, and still let you hit behind gates.
i think that a 3xx damage returned on a 10 hits channeled skill is a bit too much….don’t you think the same Devs?
Example: 1vs1 —--Engi vs Anything with retaliation—-Engi (FT) press 1, Anything do nothing——Engi takes 3000 damage , Anything takes 2500 damage.
This is what happen if the enemy do nothing while you’re flamejetting him…immagin if the enemy remebers to hit you as well….
Now do this against 2 players…..player 1 takes 2500 damage….player 2 takes 2500 damage…you take 6000 damage !!!
But the best is yet to come….do this against 5 people with retaliation and you are almost dead while they are laughing …
So let me make the state of the game on the enginner:
FT is not very nice to use now for the retaliation on the skill number 1
Elixir S do not allow you to use abilty or tool belt…ok ok i admit it was OP before….but why the Mist form still permits to change attunement?
Rifled turret barrels,autottol installation and metal plating are still bugged on 03/05/2013 …this makes any turret build useless ..
Toss Elixir U is still bugged after this patch…a lot of times when you trow it …it does nothing at all…
Elixir gun ? Should i write something about that thing? naaa you already now it…
Almost HALF of our Utility are not used by anyone ( in WWW) …
We are still the most bugged class in the game ( traits and skills)…
We got nerfed every month more….
But the real problem is another one….even with all thoose issues …Arenanet’s Enginner is the funniest MMO class i ever played in my life…so all of us are still plyaing it hopeing for some love from you guys…
So please Devs can you tell us which build is the less worst this month so we can play it?
It Is faster….i really dont want to use my brain once again to survive another month in WWW …just tell us how we have to set the traits in May and we are fine…

I just love the flammenwerfer too much to just give up. Just sucks that retal does about 2x the damage you dish out with it with the auto attack. Hit 3 ppl with it and that’s like 900+ a tick.

Lucky you….on me does something around 350 per hit….i dont remeber exactly how much….
BTW MAY is the Statich Discharge Month !! But dont tell it to the Devs….thay hate us to much.
