How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
Are there any Gadget builds that work for WvW? Gadgets look like so much fun but I would also like to not fall on my face over and over.
Get yourself a Rifle, Grenade Kit, and both Boot utilities.
Slick Shoes and Rocket Boots give you the best mobility in the game. Specced into Gadget CD you basically have a 16 second Ride the Lightning (scales with swiftness and super-speed) that removes mobility-impairing conditions.
Add Jumpshot and Overcharged shot and you have a run-and-gun power Engi.
Chaithh’s Twitch channel has a build covering those and you can look that up if you need ideas.

You can probably replace rifle with Pistol/Pistol and use 30/10/0/10/20 to get gadget CD, Grenadier and Pistol CD. Everything else is up to you.

Why would you want to replace the best engineer weapon with the worst engi weapon? If you’re using pistol at least use a shield.
I’ve been building a “Rocketeer” meant as a member of a zerg buster group (slick shoes + rocket boots into a zerg for multiple knock downs), but haven’t really been able to test it since Anet’s system keeps matching my server up with a diff time zone (always night capping and no real zvz)
0 0 20 30 20 with boon/prot duration runes and boon duration food (100% prot duration 85% boon duration)
My current problem is “What to do while slick shoes is on cd?”
Mines are underratted. Look into them. Make sure to pick up the proper traits in explosions otherwise they’re crap (specifically the blast radius one)

Blowtorch is decent if you can land Slick Shoes/target is Chilled/Immobilised.
Glue Shot can give you some breathing room, as it’s un-blockable it’s effective against people who just used Elite + Lyssa or someone running with shield raised towards you. If you land it it’s some free grenades and a Blowtorch right there. It’s also not stability-related and melee specs can be kited briefly with this (just follow up with chill).
Pistol is the condi weapon that goes with Rabid gear and P/P is very offensive which is reflected in the traits I chose.
Shield is a pure survival weapon with its CC and finishers (water field spike heals). Shield requires speccing 20 into inventions to lower the CD. Honestly I can’t deal with the 30/40 sec default CD but if you’re good at rationing their usage, awesome. You would also need to pull 20 points out of somewhere, which means you lose one or more of:
Gadget CD
Perma-swiftness on Kit Swap
Perma-vigour on Kit Swap
Grenadier
Your choice really, but I feel Grenades offer the best range with the OP’s given Rabid gear. It has great damage and some control, not to mention a 1500 range. It can and will hit people in a zerg. You can also throw them behind you while running away (just pan camera).
If you don’t like Grenadier, you can opt for Flamethrower or another similarly offensive kit. Incendiary Ammo gives long burn stacks and a bit of small-scale control with pushback and blind (you can blind stomp), but you do have to fight at close range as opposed to max range (1500).
The CD and free boons are more a quality of life thing, if you are willing to let go to take Shield CD. In the same tree you get Stabilised Armour and Protective Shield, good traits, and the 15 minor for Heal recharge at 25%. It’s not a bad trade-off.

How do you get out of the zerg afterwards? xD
It’s good vs small numbers, you can knock 1 person down repeatedly and spam Grenades on him. Vs Large numbers those not hit by you will try to kill you…
Slick Shoes is more a life saver in that situation… best to maintain distance and spam grenades.
If you want to be disruptive, as Turbo Whale has said, get a Mine. Shield 4 is a pushback, Big Ol’ Bomb is a Launch, and you also have Thumper Turret. Get creative, as they say.
Well, I have 3 blocks ready (2 shield skills and gear shield from tool kit) and if those aren’t enough there’s still dodging and super speed. And if that still isn’t enough I have to hope 53% damage reduction keeps me alive long enough to use rocket boots again.
5 people does not a zerg make. Why would I focus on skills that hit at most 5 people? Everything you said is exactly the opposite of “get creative” since every single one of those suggestions are already “part of the norm”.

Right. My suggestions were based on the unmentioned assumption that Slick Shoes creates less disruption than the other 5-capped skills. My bad. Slick Shoes has a long CD and very short duration. You can Slick Shoes + Rocket Boots into a zerg, but it would only hit in a very narrow straight line. Do you plan to run head-on into them or from the side? The same sort of disruption could be provided by a Guardian Line of Warding, JI + Ring of Warding or a Mesmer Temporal Curtain. On lower CD.
Those that I listed don’t have to be run on their own. You can apply them one after the other to launch or knock back more than 5 around you. As far as I know there aren’t many AoE CC skills that can hit more than 5 (i.e. multi-hit).
Warrior Stomp, Earthshaker etc;
Guardian Shield of Absorption etc;
Engineer Detonate Magnetic Shield, Big Ol’ Bomb, etc;
Elementalist Updraft, Earthquake;
Thief Tripwire etc;
Ranger Entangle etc;
Necro Reaper’s Mark etc;
Mesmer Illusionary Wave and Temporal Curtain Detonate;
Just some that I could think of, and they are all 5-capped skills. Not to mention all the AoE cleave damage in ZvZ fights; those are a lot of 5-capped skills to simply dismiss.
You have a few ground-cast Stability affected CCs in this game, such as the above mentioned Guardian wards, Ele Lightning field, Engi Toss Elixir U (Curtain), Necro Spectral Wall… (non-exhaustive list) which allow you to hit more than 5, but I do not think Engi can do the same with such ease.
My list is also not the be-all-end-all, hence the “get creative”; there must be things I have left out. If you feel you know about everything else and it’s just gadgets you’re trying to work out, awesome.
I’ve been running a 30/10/0/0/30 build for wvw. P/S, Healing Turret, Rocket Boots, Grenade Kit, Slick Shoes and Supply Drop. I run Rabid armor and Carrion trinkets. It works quite well and its very fun. Lotsa blasting for your water fields with Boots, Shield and detonate. Replace Slick Shoes with another turret or Elixir Gun for more blasting fun.
Super Speed, Slick Shoes and Rocket Boots can cut a traveling zerg in two in the right situation.

So there’s the divide and conquer application. What I’m exploring now is like acting as my commanders personal KD torpedo. I can already imagine watching The Hunt for Red October again.

Where I’m torpedo 1 and hopefully I find some other eng’g who finds this amusing to play torpedo 2.
For gear and utilities I’m exploring 2 set ups:
- rifle + EG for Jump Shot and Acid Bomb escapes
- p/s + tool kit for the blocks
I love rifle but Jump Shot, IMHO, isn’t really good for escapes. P/S and EG do well if you keep rocket boots on your bar. I’ve removed myself from many bad situations with just those two. Toolbelt from Slick Shoes is a nice stun break and speed then just keep your speedy kits going. Frost Grenade is great for getting away also.

I see. I’ll start with that then. Just 2 more days to match reset. Hopefully we get a server with more of a SEA population so we can finally get some good zvz’s and get some testing done.
