Gadgets, how do they work?
Battering Ram in PvP for me is essential. Keeps DPS at range which is invaluable.
Battering Ram is and Googles are good. The other Gadgets are in a bad place. I think their cds are pretty long though.
I use Rocket boots for dungeon. It provides me a gtfo button and let the nearby teammates take the burden.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
Probably better then I have given them credit for.
Largely, its just alch and elixirs are so good.
What do gadgets have, that can compare with 409? As well as hgh?
Elixirs have tons of utility. and are super varied.
As well as universal traits. Again, 409, hgh, 20% cdr, 30% boon duration for going down alch.
I can run H, B, R. Then swap to U or S as needed.
And with this, get a powerful self res, cleansing. healing/defensive buffs. Walls, haste, stealth, stablility, evade, etc.
What do gadgets have?
20% cdr.
A few gadgets get specific traits. Like mines get explosive traits.
Rocket boots has a nice CD. but really, its just overcharged shot on rifle, but not as good.
Googles are awful. high CD. terrible use’s.
You gotta remember the gadgets are really 2 skills with the toolbelt skills (but then again so is everything). And gadgets do have their uses. Slick shoes is really awesome as super speed is faster than swiftness, and flooring a whole zerg in WvW is SOO much fun. I agree some of the cooldowns need some work and a few bugs worked out with em (mine doesn’t get cooldown reduction) But they do have their uses. Goggles toolbelt can setup some nice bursts. Rocket boots is kinda gimmiky, but works as a panic button, and a blast finisher, and a nice long burn. I mostly use them with static discharge builds
The thing about Gadgets, is that Elixirs and Kits are both better overall.
Yes gadgets are useful, but they’re more situational and just not quite as good. Elixirs also receive much better trait support, so Elixir B is almost universally better than Goggles.
Goggles can be better, but ONLY if you really need a stun break.
I do love Rocket boots though.
you dont use slick shoes for slick shoes (most of the time), you use it for the 2x speedboost toolbelt skill it gives you.

If you like PBRam, it’s more realistic to get the Flamethrower instead.
PBRam:
- 1/4s cast time
- 45s CD
- 180 range
- Single target
- Moderate damage
Air Blast:
- Instant cast
- 15s CD
- 300 range
- AoE
- No damage
Unless you’re using PBRam for the damage (lol), it’s not all that good.

I love Mines… They slow down the setup before a fight in PvE, but you bring the enemy right into them and set them back a few precious seconds. It’s not universally awesome like some skills are.
Also I love rocket boots, others disagree. They get me out of melee and fire patches quickly.
The thing that I like about using gadgets is that I don’t have to spend a bunch of traits on them to make them great. Just one trait, and I can focus on other things. Elixirs demand you take a full line of traits dedicated to them, and then because of the investment, you want to fill your skill bar with elixirs. Gadgets just don’t require much investment, and for a tight build, it’s golden.
I have played around with my build and utility skills an awful lot, but I never find myself using things like the Personal Battering Ram, the Slick Shoes, the Rocket Boots, or the Utility Goggles. I haven’t really been able to come up with a good use for these skills yet, so I am wondering if and how anyone else uses these skills. Also while we are at it, is the Thumper Turret really as bad as I think it is, or does it have its uses? Thoughts?
When you posted this, did you even know what most of these skills did?
No offense, but I really have to scratch my head at anyone who cannot find a use for stun breakers. Rocket boots and goggles are both stun breakers. How do you not have a use for a skill that debuffs multiple stacks of vulnerability? How do you not have use for blast finishers?
Battering ram and slick shoes are both great control for opponents that get in melee range. The PBR tool belt skill id a nice ranged attack with a cripple. Again, scratching my head at how you cannot find use for that.
For me this is how I see the gadgets.
Personal battering ram: bad, flamethrower is almost always better. When it comes to the toolbelt the cripple is useful but I still feel like flamethrower is better all around.
Slick shoes: good, both toolbelt and the skill itself. If you turn off melee assist (its on by default but we don’t have melee weapons) you can walk right through enemies w/o a dodge roll and knock them down. The toolbelt doesn’t actually make you twice as fast (there is a cap at 133% speed aka swiftness) but it gives a buffer that allows you move at max speed even with chill; it looks like you are shuffling super fast.
Rocket boots: Bad, elixir S is a much better stun breaker. While the movement away can be useful because it cc’s you, is canceled out by chill and cripple, and generally doesn’t work, its more reliable to just use elixir S. Toolbelt is meh, long cd for the damage it does.
Goggles: Good, but only in burst builds. Its basically our way of bringing a damage utility and also having a stun break. The skill itself gives fury and makes you immune to blindness which is one of the counters to burst builds. The toolbelt is especially useful since its instant for static discharge builds and does 10 stacks of vuln (think Mark the Target).
Rocket Boots are amazing because of the Tool Belt Skill, the aoe burning does wonders in my conditions build.
I only use gadgets for certain situations and never as part of a build.
If there is a fight near a ledge or I am doing the JP then PBR is nice to try and get the fun knock off the cliff.
If I have to run through a zerg to get into a keep or in pve to get to a point then slick shoes is awesome along with Elixir S and/or blocks.
If I feel like mixing things up in WvW or I am just trying to harass ppl then Rocket Boots is awesome, the little flame kick is pretty sweet.
If I accidently smoke to much pot at once I might put on the Goggles thinking that they might actually be usefull in some way, but after about 30mins I come to my senses.
Gadgets are fun novelties to use in certain situations but thats about it.
(And I really hate that rocket boots knocks you on your kitten its so lame, I mean they are ROCKET BOOTS not dynamite shoes, you should fly backwards then the boosters kick in and you make a nice little descent AND they should have a second activation that will send you ROCKETING back at the enemy, now those are Rocket Boots)
Oh and I use the Thumper Turret in PVE all the time along with the Healing Turret, with the explosive turret trait I have tons of blast finishers. So pair that with FT or Bomb kits and you can down groups of mobs like nothing or solo some champions.
Rifle, flame, net, thumper;
Kittening gadgets, how do they work?
Tarnished Coast
Panic Time!
Rocket boots would be a GREAT gadget with two changes.
Make the Utility skill just launch you backwards (as if using Elixir Gun 4), and make the toolbelt kit a small burst of flame at your feet (Let’s say between 400 and 600 range)
It’d make it less clunky and overall way better.
