I’m trying to figure out what gear I should get for my new level 80 engineer.

I now use 30/10/0/20/10 with grenades, flamthrower/bomb and elixir S/rocket boots/elixir gun. So, I figured I should go Rampagers and mix in some Dire/Soldiers for survability (as I’m not too good with getting off water fields yet – which is the main form of healing for Engineer I believe).

I have a few questions:
Grenades = both power and condition?
Flamehtrower = just power?
Bombs = just powers?
Elixir gun = both power and conditions?
Rune of the Engineer: with bundle they mean kits?

Kits are bundles, yes. So are elementalist conjured weapons and warrior banners and the everyday boulder you find all over the place.

Grenades are hybrid between condition and power. So are bombs. Flamethrowers AA is mostly power damage, but the few burns in the kit benefit from condi damage as well. Elixir gun is a hybrid too. Acid bomb is pure power damage, but Fumigate and tranq dart is mostly condition.

Generally speaking i would say that rampager gear is best for engi. Gives enough precision to proc the on-crit effects of some traits and weapon sigils, and provides a reasonable power and condition damage to strenghten those effects.

rune of the engineer is one of the worst runes available. don’t use it.

I’m also a new level 80 engineer. I’ve looked around online for suggestions on runes to use, but there doesn’t seem to be a consensus. I saw “Superior Rune of Perplexity,” but then it seems that you’re either a jerk for using that rune or it is nerfed. So, a little confused on that one. Then I see either Rune of Undead or Rune of Nightmare. Lots of choices and I’m not clear with which to go.

i personally use adventurer for condition builds because dodging=surviving. can’t stress that enough. undead i don’t think is that good. nightmare is amazing but a pain in the kitten to obtain. some other good condi runes are perplexity, noble, antitoxin, and scavenging. pick one that you think goes best with your build. for example, if you’re not running a lot of interrupts, using perplexity is a waste.

Thanks for the info. I thought the same about Rampager.

Ah, I was wondering why they were so cheap. XD I’d think the 5% damage bonus would be pretty awesome but I guess not then.

Hm I’m not really a fan of the ones you named either. Might duration, 5% chance of fear and life stealing doesn’t seem worth it to me. o.o And isn’t the Perplexity rune only nice for PvP/WvW?

Thanks, I’ll take a look at it. C:

Everything mentioned in this thread is only for pvp/WvW. You should clarify what you’re talking about next time

5% damage is good except it only affects power damage. the rest of the runeset doesn’t have any power damage, rather it has condition damage and not even as the major stat. percentage based damage bonuses for condition builds are worthless. if the 6 piece bonus was a more worthwhile defensive or condition ability, then maybe it wouldn’t be so bad .

noble runes are amazing if you run battle sigil and enhance performance. you get hgh caliber might stacks without hgh.

scavenging runes are good because lifesteal really helps your self sustain especially when you combine it with leeching/blood sigils. the amount of damage and healing it does are fixed and condi builds are inherently tanky. the effects are very noticeable in 1v1 fights. the runeset also gives the most condition damage out of any rune, even more than undead.

nightmare runes are amazing because it gives condition duration on top of the fear, which will save your life. 10% condition duration can contribute towards your 100% goal without sacrificing damage for a giver weapon. even without 100% condition duration, 10% may grant you extra seconds on your burns and bleeds. that damage really adds up. check your durations before you decide to use it. if you don’t get a good sized boost to burning then you’re better off using a different rune.
