Good Build for Solo PvE in General
i play alot of pve and this is my build
http://www.intothemists.com/calc/index.php?build=VWRR;2sPFw0m5V1Fx0;9;4T-O4936A;147;21;8jwmAjwmAT
i wear vatlaaws with undead rune. My pistols are all gearbore. I have currently three each using sigil of corruption, sigil of force, sigil of battle. Mostly likely will be getting another two more with sigil of force again and sigil of bloodlust.
i am also using another set of karma armour that is PVT.
I also spend more time in Pve than anywhere else. Here’s some suggestions for PvE levelling your Eng:
- Learn to dodge. That’s right, really learn to dodge. Why? Because the engineer is so squishy compared to the Warrior (far less blocks and worse armor) and the Ranger (no pet to draw off agro) that avoiding damage in combat is an essential Eng skill.
- Learn to use kits a lot. Eng’s Weapons are nerfed because we get a lot of our effectiveness from our kit skills – so much so that most Engs probaly spend more time in kits than out of them (the exception would be the Pistol/Elixir Eng, and even then they make liberal use of the Tool Kit). As part of this, master kit/weapon switching and chaining skills from different kits/weapons for greater effect.
- Master the grenade kit – it’s probably the most effective kit in PvE (and elsewhere).
- Try out a Pistol/Elixir build with Tool Kit.
- Try out a Flamethrower/Elixir Gun build.
- Try out all the other Eng kits and weapons.
- Once you’ve done 3, 4, 5, and enough of 6 decide which combination you most enjoy and build around that.
Ultimately, the Eng is not a class that can just sit in one build. Good Eng’s regularly swap around weapons, kits, utilities, traits and even gear to suit whatever they’re doing: roaming/farming, one set-up; soloing a Champ, another; AC run a third; CoF run a fourth; etc.
What does that have to do with levelling? Levelling is your opportunity to learn the different abilities available to the Eng – make use of it (otherwise you’ll end up like me, having to go back as a L80 and spend time learning things I should have just tried out while I was levelling).

I’m having all sorts of success with my Flamethrower, so much so, that I almost never leave it. I find the damage is solid, it works against single or multiple opponents, and there’s plenty of defense and mitigation to keep me out of trouble. That means I can more often plant my feet and soak the damage, rather than trying to keep from being hit. I even stopped using pistols and switched to the rifle, just to have that many more escape options. Plus, I just like having Jump Shot immediately available for moving around the map. Going into my inventory to swap my pistols for the rifle, then back again, is just a pain in the backside.
I know how unpopular the ol’ Flamethrower is, but for my style of play, it seems to be ideal.
One good thing to try out while leveling is mixing grenade/bomb/FT. Now I don’t recommend all 3 as I swear by Elixer small as a “oh crap” skill, but at least two of those and pistol. The reason? Blind. Blind is incredibly powerful and despite the nerf in bomb kit, blind still really helps dealing alot of mobs at a time. Note that in this set-up, you will/can usually handle groups of mobs at a time. I recommend bomb kit + grenade/FT as both have a 1-shot aoe blind skill. I actually recommend grenade simly coz of the frozen grenade as it’ll help you kite the mobs more.
While I was levelling, I use pistol/shield for extra survivability. I start with some pot shots to lure the mobs (maybe even grenade barrage), once they come closer, I use static shot, switch to bomb → big ol’ bomb then immediately fire bomb. The timing is incredible, you’ll get an aoe knockback and aoe might, then once they’re scattered, grenade switch to frozen nade first and a few other nades while they run back to you, once they’re near, bomb kit →smoke bomb and deal 1-2 hits with normal bombs before returning to flash grenade and then whatever suits your fancy. :p
+1 to using the FT in PvE. The last patch improved it’s viability to the point that it’s now my go-to PvE kit/weapon.

As you can see, that’s a lot of button presses. Be prepared for that. This is essentially all I did for leveling too, though back then the smoke bomb was better.
Doing what I can for DB during EU primetime
Hey guys, I’m back to my Asura engi little thang after a long hiatus (levelled a necro/warrior/ranger to 80 & a elem to 40+). I had parked her in Brisban at 16th, now 17th. I forgot just how squishy she was, almost as bad as my elem!
Ok, I mostly PvE solo, so I’m curious as to what’s changed if anything for us carebear engineers in the last 3 mths, given the number of patches & changes since earlier this year. I’m not really interested in the most efficient mob clearing build, nor the fastest single target killer, just an overall good eng build that’s reasonably survivable & most of all FUN to play!
Too much dodging & I’d rather play a thief lol! Too much button mashing doesn’t appeal to me either, so I know some of you will say go play another class he he. I read that the all turret eng build is nerfed/broken to oblivion – is that still the case? What is this pistols/elixir build on the fun factor scale?
It’s odd that engineers are that much squishier than rangers, level for level, with the same armor & mods/stats. Why is that…?
Sorry about the bump guys, but no one…?
Anyway, tried soloing in the early 20s with grenades & some turrets, but have now gone back to pistols + an all turret build (with targetted turrets trait). Seems to work really well at drawing initial aggro from mobs & keeping me alive longer. I guess I’ll get Supply Crate at 30th as a no brainer…? I’ve been doing mobs 2-3 levels higher than me (even Vets) comfortably in Brisban, but will that last?
What brick walls will I hit as a mainly PvE soloer later on with this build? What gear/stats should I look for? Someone said VIT/Toughness is a must for survivability ay higher levels – is this true? What traits are best, apart from the obvious turret buffing ones? Much TIA!
Sorry for late answer but as of level 80 I am running this build:
It is made to allow You maintain high mobility with quite few healing abilities. The general idea is to always kite using bomb kit (swapping kits every time you lose the swiftness from speedy kits). You have decent heals from Bandage Self, Healing Mist and Super Elixir + you regenerate health while you have a kit on Yourself (so constantly). You can help Yourself with healing by using the med kit (curing all conditions every 15 seconds and maintaing fury for 12 seconds every 20 seconds). You generaly have higher endurance regeneration then Thief on meth. The whole build revolves around evading everything and kiting the monsters. It allowed me to solo all of the queens champions from queen jubilee live world event and it is yet to be tested in the dungeons)
The gear of course is the dream – currently going with something sturdier – but it should allow you to pretty much get out of many sticky situations and kite (and kill) even 8 to 12 mobs at the same time (excluding champions because of their nasty habit of using skills).
The third utility skill can be swapped as You please.
