Grenade Kit Auto-Targeting
[EU] Gandara
Noooo stoooop.. when u see someone downed/on the wall you don’t have time to target them you just unload in approximate location. That does wonders. And your real target is still saved.
I really hope that Grenades, even #1, never, ever use auto-targeting. I actually don’t like using them very much, but I do use them. If they did not use ground targeting they would just be awful. In PvP, they would be, without exaggeration, completely unusable.
As far the second part of your suggestion, I’m all for giving players more options! Unfortunately, I think an option like that is outside the realm of possibility for the foreseeable future.
Look in options and use the targeting method that is .. is it Quickcast?
Either way; you hit 1; and it immediately shoots your grenade at your mouse cursor. Halves the number of button presses. (halves because; you do know you can hit 1 – to start targeting; then 1 again to accept whatever location your mouse is pointing at right? you DONT have to click the mouse to “choose” the outgoing damage?)
shrug. I don’t do this because I play classes other than engineer most of the time. But if I was an Eng (with gren build); I would be switching this option on.
I often play a grenadier and I can say that despite the lack of autotargeting in grenade kit landbased combat can give sore fingers for excessive typing of mouse click #1 and key #1 together, I definitely do NOT want auto-targeting for grenade kit. It would utterly ruin it for pvp and WvWvW.
What the grenade kit needs is more damage to attack #1. Considering the slow fly time of the grenades at long range and how easy it is dodge them and how difficult it is to land them against any moving target or moving yourself at same time, the damage is just… pathetic.
Yes, it is true that trying to move, kite, dodge and ground target at same time is difficult. But wasn’t engineer supposed to be the most difficult profession to play? Only for elite players. Do 2-3x more to achieve almost the same, which other professions can do more easily.

I wish more people would heed MeateaW’s advice on quickcast. In fact I use it for eeeverything and it’s great.
I use a xbox controller myself so don’t really get to use grenades at all. I really wish there was an option to simply make ground target either cast at your targets feet or your own feet depending on the skill. Could use it if you wanted to or not if you don’t.
Whenever you click a ground targeted skill with the mouse and you have Fast Ground Targeting activated it throws it at your feet. If you are using an XBox controller, couldn’t you just set your mouse in the middle of the screen and it would always target where the mouse is?
As for single targeting the Grenades, this is something I’m adamantly against. It would make them very strong in low skill areas and extremely weak in high skill areas. This would be a bad way to move them, and it would remove many of the uses it has outside of a direct 1v1 fight such as lobbing them up onto keep walls.

It’s funny cause I’m not alone in this idea of Grenade #1 using sticky targeting. Just read through the Engineer discussion on Reddit. You just don’t hear a bunch of people raving about Grenades (outside of 100nades) unless they are referring to their use underwater.

That being said, I totally appreciate that people have varying preferences and level of skill. I think ideally, ArenaNet should add an option to give all ground targeting skills the option to use sticky targeting. It could be a toggle per skill similar to how auto-attack is toggled on/off.
EDIT: Oh, just wanted to mention I did acknowledge the option to turn on quickcast or whatever it is called in the options menu. I think that doesn’t work very well either cause this game isn’t an FPS. They only way that could work for me personally is with that Combat Mode mod thing.

I understand your point SpaceCowboy.
When I have to run FotM, I hate to use grenade. It’s my most useful build, But I know my finger will be out of shape at the end of the run. And I use fast targetting. I can’t imagine without it.
I usually swap to a SD build for PvE, less button smashing.
On the other hand, I wouldn’t want it to be auto target. In WvW and tPvP, it’s vital. We need to be able to aim to be effective. It also add a challenge to land your grenade, also the reason why they are strong.

If it was an option, I suppose that could work. I’m not entirely sure how high priority designing an entire UI/control system for a single kit on a single profession would be though.

Maybe a trait thats like “Strong Arm: Grenades now travel faster but can no longer ground target and have a smaller blast radius” or something. I wouldnt use it though, because the strength of grenades is the ground targeting.
The ramifications of this would be most evident in PvP. I spam the area with grenade 1 when a thief stealths, which I’m assuming with sticky targeting, would completely negate my ability to do this. I understand why a lot of people would want this, particularly from a PvE perspective, but it would completely destroy their use in PvP.
There is not reason they cannot make the grenade #1 skill to target. I have made threads on this in beta and on release, myself.
It would bring it in line with elementalist, mesmer, and necromancer staff skills. Those 3 professions staff skills are extremely comparative to what grenades skills do for us.
Based on those 3 profession staff skills, it is a very reasonable request.
Maybe it’s just me and my time spent playing a Necro, but the grenades seem just fine to me and comparably useful to the way a Necro’s staff marks are – staff marks being useless when trying to lay them at a moving target’s feet, you’ll always miss, but if used intelligently while anticipating an opponent’s route/objective allows you to punish/deny them for their choices. Learning to anticipate an opponents movements by gauging their objective (i.e. kill you/take node/escape/etc.) is the key to being successful with all GW2s ground targeted AOE skills. Grenade 1 is also >>>>>> Necro staff 1.
I can’t help but think that if Grenade 1 tracked targets it would end up similar to a other projectile weapons that are easily countered by simply strafing side to side – something that ground targeting can compensate for. Ultimately I would see it as a nerf to grenades in PvP.
I’ve stayed at this party entirely too long
Meh, what ANet could do was introduce the ability to hold a button down to repeat a cast. Or go even further and introduce sustained skills, skills that stay “up” as long as the button is held (hello any and all blocks).
i was just about to come and make a thread for this and suddenly there it was at the top of the list!
after reading almost everyones comments, i would conclude the easiest and best way to proceed would be to give grenades MORE DPS but keep the ground targeting – its a difficult kit to play and it should make the player feel worth it when done right.
So ANet please hurry up and fix this, time is wasting.

I think your looking at it differently then what the request are intending. No one fels they are not fine. What every one is looking for, is the chance to use the kit, and have one of the 5 keys function in a manner that does not require it to be repeatedly mashed.
the lack of autocast is the sole reason I avoid grenades on land. I like the feel, I like the abilities, and just love the damage… but only when underwater and I don’t end up losing a tonne of both due to lag adding a 0.2s here and a 0.1s there to every one of my casts.
I would love to see at least the #1 skill be target centered, 2-5 can stay gtaoe. Or, as digiowl.9620 says, allow the continuous casting by pressing and holding buttons.
They made them this way so they took more skill than spamming a button. You can still use pistols and get aoe and dots with them. Now, I do think spamming #1 grenade and connecting every time with them should do more damage than spamming #1 pistol since it takes more skill but I never really use pistols so I’m not sure the differences. In other words, if anything, complain about their damage, not to make them auto-target.

You do realize that all normal target attacks will actually target the enemy for you once you start using the skill right? It’s part of the problem with the medkit right now it even happens on that one even without an actually attack.

ehhem..I know its a bit weird quoting myself here :-/, but i feel I need to ‘right the wrong’ of my initial post. while the grenade kit is not perfect it is better than what i gave it credit for, reason being is i only ever used it in dungeons (making it feel UnderPowered) yesterday i cleared orr with it and was tanking groups of 2-3 on my lonesome. so now i feel like if they do up DPS it’ll become OP. what can i say balancing always gonna be a kitten, but now i do not feel DPS should be increased.
