Try your best to not make mistakes, but, when you do make mistakes, learn from them.
Better yourself.
Has anyone had a video/guide/etc. on tips for hitting a moving target with grenades … or is it simply just something you need to get used to over accumulating more hours on the Engineer?
I try to lead the target, etc., but meh … still don’t feel like I’m “accurate enough” … especially with targets in PvP.
NOTE: I’m aware that at point blank it’s hard to miss :-p I’m talking about targets at 600+
Well, probably the best tip would be to predict where your target will likely be and synchronize it with time granades need to travel to that place.
It’s surely something that gets improved over the hours played. People (players) are predictable, the more you play, the better you aim with nades and the better you know what your enemies might actually do.
there are some tips:
1) immobilise your target – then hit it hard
2) knockdown your target – then hit it hard
3) come melee/close range – hit it on the move
4) let them tail you(kite) – hit your feet
5) hit Shadow Refuge – hit thief
6) let your teammates tank, and hit those who attack them
7) hit all projectile reflects with nades#5 only
its safest to assume you cant predict a person at 600+ range except under 2 conditions:
the lag time at ~900+ range is enough for them to react to your nades.
if youre having trouble in pve, keep practicing. in pvp, focus on making sure you hit your soft and hard ccs to set up combos for the nades (and big hits) you want to hit.
It’s generally unwise to throw grenades at far ranges! Even if you were to 100% predict the correct trajectory, lobbed grenades are extremely visible and easily sidestepped! You are better off using pistol/rifle/Elixir Gun auto attacks to proc Incendiary Powder or Air/Fire Sigils!
But yes if you want to get better at aiming grenades, you just need to practice!
Wahoo! Bye frands!
nade 4, pistol 5 or rifle 2 are your friends …. ( i really love pistol 5 for spamming nades on a crowded area )
Thanks all :-)
Matches what I thought … so I think I’m on the right track.
If someone is chasing you throw the grenades in front of you. Given you both have the same speed they should land in your wake.
Freeze grenade is the best to make sure the others land. But never miss it.
If you unsure they will connect just throw shrapnel or auto. They still do damage and proc burns and such.
The only acceptable case where you have to throw grenades at far range is in WvW if you are being chased by a larger force. In that case, press “look behind”, and throw your nades where your foes will be keeping their current pace. You can practice anywhere with NPCs, or ask friends to practice with you by just running around in a custom arena. In that case (and this case only), you’re pretty much certain the grenades will hit, or if your foes stop or move sidewards to avoid them, you will have gained some precious kiting seconds. If they don’t, they’ll be weakened when they finally catch up with you.
Like most of these guys are saying, you don’t want to range a moving target with grenades, its to difficult.
For ranged targets try close in, use your dodges and blocks when needed to close the gap then fill in with immo, cripple, chill and CC to lock them down for your dmg.
For melee professions you’ll want to keep them at a good range, 400-800, use your kiting well and try not to get locked down by movement condis or CC.
The only time to use grenades at 1200-1500 range is if you are zerging, or running away from a group. Remember grenades can be thrown behind you, to me that’s the only reason I use them so often, its a really powerful thing.

I use it from far when i arriving on a point and some teammate is already fighting there. If there are 2 melee fighting nade 4 can be really a good help
hi an old post I made to help ppl with the basics of grenades
so this will help you a lot.
1. learn the fights. watch youtube guides on how its done. where to stack and when to dodge.
2. learn spatial awareness. that’s the ability to look at the entire scene while still attacking the boss (its like driving a car u learn to be aware of everything ahead of you while still driving)
3. DODGE DIP DUCK DIVE AND DODGE !!!!! if you believe you are about to take damage then dodge. pre-emptive dodging is also very handy and a lot of the time saves u from attacks u didn’t even think would happen
zaced only noob players tell others to L2P and then give zero advice on how to improve or even learn the class. players like you are just a waste of server space.
with time you will get to learn the class better.
I wrote this for another thread that’s doomed to the pages of no 1 cares
1. use fast cast ground target with marker (lets u see where u aim and still be fast cast)
2. imagine you are playing a third person shooter and imagine the middle of your screen has a target reticule
3. learn all the arcs for your skills inc the rifle skills.
4. get an mmo gaming mouse (I use a razer naga) it greatly improves your ability to play mmos and classes like the engineer (keybind heavy / ability heavy class)
5. go to the pvp lobby and use those golems to practice aiming then u can go to wvw and practice on moving targets in a zerg
once you learn to control the grenades and understand the movements of your targets (in pve and pvp / wvw).
you can then anticipate the movement and throw the grenades ahead or behind the target or to the sides etc. get used to the flight time and arc of grenades and u will be able to make the most of it.
helpful tip each grenade thrown is able to hit 5 targets each, example grenade #1 can tag up to 15 npcs / players if u get a decent spread. grenade barrage is up to 30 targets tagged if u get a good spread.
its just recently uploaded so its not fully processed yet = grainy picture to any 1 who watches just after its been linked. sorry : (
also on a side note. this video I posted is all about manual aiming all abilitys. learning this makes u a much better engineer in terms of ability aiming and predicting.
also if u select your target and have the option “stop auto attacking on target change” unchecked it will let u target your foe start to auto attack then u can left click empty space to “deselect the target”
but your rifle auto attack will carry on. even if u change to a kit and use grenade #1 spam and swap back to rifle it will automatically auto attack
but don’t forget that with skills 2 3 and 4 u need to learn how to manually aim.
the reason for not harving a target “targeted” is it causes havoc with grenade ground targeting.
I am sure you all had that big boss dude and u targeted him with tab target then suddenly your ground target went from directly under the boss to just over your skill bar
or your ability to throw at distance is no longer possible due to the target frame obscuring the view preventing u from hitting the target from behind with grenades
well that’s a work around that lets u have all skills working with no target frame messing it up. the real fun begins when u learn to hit moving targets
hopefully this will help you a bit with the class
