If one of our secondary professions lets us wield hammers, its probably melee focused. I hope the other profession is just as interesting…wonder what the other one can bring to us, bows seems likely

You are of course correct, our kits are also optimized for melee. Every single one. We don’t really have a weapon that can reliably and effectively fight over a range of 900+, that wouldn’t be better at a (much) closer range. And 900 is really not that far to begin with.

About those drone like flying super things – I already love them but I guess they will be kitten I mean – Every minion is kitten so far – ranger pet, nekro pet, ki flaws … :S

Ranged Autoattacks =/= ranged weapons.
The key is to observe what range you need to be in to be effective.

What I’m looking forward to is having movement options on a weapon for engineer class if all goes well with hammer. If I can do warrior or thief-style non-targeted jukes with my weapon (since we don’t really get those in a kit) that might increase my lifespan in wvw and whatever new pvp play mode they are making. being truly mobile as an engineer… that’s kind of a dream come true for me since I came here from Torchlight 2. I don’t exactly want to be a nike warrior, but I do want to pwn in melee without a crazy rotation. Now if they could just come up with a giant wrench or tetsubo skin for me I will be arenanet’s biggest fan and probably rent out organs for them.

So you want warrior, great sword style movement, with warrior hammer style CC and cleave damage? Seems unlikely.

Yeah.. pretty unlikely indeed.
If I had to speculate I would say with the rocket propulsion, and the fact we’ve likely already witnessed a charging 3 hit hammer cleave movement ability (in the trailer), it’s going to have some movement. Who knows what kind of cleave or CC it will bring, that all depends on how fast it is.

Actually, you wouldn’t be too far wrong. I’ve been thinking maybe Boilermaker or something! The general populace’s estimate is Demolitionist or the like, though.

Just had a thought, maybe the bots will function like the elementalist’s rock barrier, granting you increased toughness for each bot that is active or something. Secondary skill might be something like a self destruct command, dealing damage to nearby enemies. In which case, the bots may actually be a weapon skill tied to the hammer, and not utilities.
The flying bots are probably just another visual enhancing thing for artistic purposes. Like that polearm also present in the trailer.
I don’t really care for the hammer if they remove the hobosacks that’s all the specialization I would ever need.

No, they’ve specifically stated that at release of HoT, class specialisations will have access to one new weapon. No more, no less.
It will fit my Norn engi so well, I admit my interest is piqued!
If anyone is familiar with it, I’ve always loved the Tinkerer/Engineer/Gear Master skills from a game called Dragon Nest. Essentially you have stationary turrets that work just like the ones we have, then you have weak little duck robots that chase enemies and perform a few basics attacks but die easily, then you have one particularly large robot(named Alfredo) who you have some more degree of control over. Game to game translation wise, he’d function similar to a ranger pet, but instead of having activated abilities, you toggle which abilities you want him to use and he only uses those which are turned on, pretty much as soon as they’re off cd and he’s near an enemy.
I only bring this up because I really want something more than just “mobile turrets”. Mechanical creatures similar to summoned elementals, but with the control of ranger’s pets really. My only fear for this idea is that if by some miracle this does happen, they’ll make the specialization “reliant” on the summoned things to achieve full potential, which isn’t bad in theory, but in practice we all know what happens when your class mechanic is based around AI.

dunno about you, but I run s/d for a pretty long time in wvw now and all of its variants use the auto to gap cd’s. running berserker stats gives you a good 2.4k base-crits, going up to 3.4k – 3.9k even – after considering guard-stacks, bloodlust and the might from other allies. sure, 7k-8k blunderbus, prybar and 10k-12k jumpshot hits are nothing to ignore, but still the auto delivers quite a heavy punch, given that it is effective just as much on all ranges.
group-fights are actually pretty relaxed when you can AA any given target to death in 5-10s, and spare your cd’s for those who decide to go after you.

There are certainly better auto attacks in terms of both damage an utility found in kits, but even 1000 range, the only other engi weapon that meets or exceeds that trait-less is grenades at a whopping 1500 (E-Gun and Pistol are both 900)… though good luck actually hitting anything with more than one ‘nade at that range (note that 1 hip shot is roughly 2 basic ’nades in direct damage), and Dwayna help you if they’re moving.
Also, IMO the real weakness of Pistol is it’s AA; the situation where it’s actually desirable is just so convoluted and rare… if you have Coated Bullets and if you fight no fewer than 3 baddies at once and if you can bunch them up in such a way that the actual shot pierces all 3+ baddies while they are all close enough together so that the AoE of each impact hits the others… Then you’ll have something almost as good as a fully traited Grenade #1.
The Engineer spec will be called the Forgemaster. Mark my words.

Diablo III’s demon hunter would like to teach you a think or two about how to do engineering correctly and how to do grenades correctly. Then you’ll see the problems here in this title.
Also, my turrets shouldn’t be as weak and as fragile as my Shaman’s Totems in WoW.

Having one weaponset (Scepter+Focus) that is designed to be perfectly optimal at 900 – 1200 range is one set more than engineers.

You can’t hit anything not standing still with the auto-attack of scepter at 900 range or even 600 range sometimes. Not to meantion in order to do damage with Focus-5 you need to be in melee range. I’d hardly call that set optimal at 900-1200.

While rifle aa is long range. its 3, 4, 5 are all melee. (yes even the jump)
Same with elixir gun. 1 is long range. everything else is melee.
Grenades are mid range. they CAN be long range, but accuracy takes a huge dive at long range.

Well I was reading the forum on could be leaked info for the engineer hammer. It looked like they were thinking of using steam as a resource? Could we end up seeing a ui loadout that looks like mesmers with the steam bar where clones would be and our tool belt abilities mabye changed and amplified by how much steam we have acquired?
steam as a resource? sounds like a thief tbh. we defenitly keep our toolbelt, would never not use my barrage or darlin’ big ol’
but steam … how would that be with our aa chain, one to the left, one to the right and then the big one wich unleashes smoke for a 2 sec blind! well … maybe it should be a 2-4 skill with a smoke field build it xD that’d be nice tbh
hmm kinda just wondering how they will change our mechanic mabye the toolbelt isnt gonna be linked to our utilities anymore? mabye its the drones we saw would be weird to play without having the ability to change our toolbelt skills
