Help! New lvl 80 Engi - feeling very squishy!
Alchemy provides a vast amount of boons, one of those, protection. However, it isn’t constant defense. Viper is like a condi zerker. You can’t have great defense and offense (not anymore). What is your weapon set? Shield offers decent protection with some breakbar.
Wahoo!
Condi Engi is more of a raid / high fotm thing. In solo open world I suggest you go for a zerker build with a FT, since it has much more mobility, sustained heal, aswell buffs. Basicly everything you want for open world! :P
But it’s not like condi Engi is garbage in open world at all. You can also swap a few skill that might help ya a lot.
For example you can swap the flame thrower for rocket boots for more mobility, a safe hit burn (ft #4 is garbage against moving targets … basicly everything in the new maps :P (#exceptions)) and still have that blast that you shouldn’t ignore!
If you need sustain you can either stick to tools (212 / 211) or even make use of the tool kit for the block, cripple and the high damage pry bar. In that case trait the toolkit in tools (3xx).
You can also go for scrapper and trait 312 for more sustain, then simply take the medic gyro as heal skill and you’ve got a really heavy heal with super speed and protection on demand. But now you lack condi cleanse, careful with that!
About your blasts, you’ve got (regardless of turret or gyro) a water field on your heal skill and another one on your mortar kit. Make use of that! Each blast you cause there heals ya for another 1300. Blasts like the turret itself, flame thrower #2, rocket boots, big ol’ bomb are your friends!
It’s normal that in the new jungle maps the enemies seem a bit overwhelming at first, but you’ll get used to it. Do you have masteries already? Are you new in general to the maps or just with your Engi?
Anyway you’ll handle it! But if you really love the Engineer, you may want to think about having a condi AND power gear ;3

Cool thanks, I’ll have a look at those. I’m planning to get a full zerker set as well, just wanted to start with a condi build this time :-)
I started playing a couple of days after HoT came out, mostly on my Elementalist – I’m at around Mastery Rank 45 or so at the moment, so fairly used to the mobs etc (been slowly levelling alts as well, to get to know the other Professions better*). Just not on the engi!
*so far I like the engi almost as much as the ele – reckon they’ll be fairly equal once I get used to it :-D
when i see this thread pop up (and its not so uncommon) the first and only question that comes to mind is… are you doing the following:
- spam your heal button until you see the water field and get 2 chunks of healing
- immediately pick up or explode your turret
- immediately pick up or explode your turret every single time
- never leave your turret out
?
usually the answer is no, but people often dont realize theyre doin it wrong and its not well communicated except by asking a question like youre doing. following this list will drastically improve your healing if you arent doing it. if you are, practice more.
head here to discuss wvw without fear of infractions
Well, when you take a squishy build, you tend to be squishy.
In open world I recommend taking scrapper with sneak gyro and bulwark gyro. The reflects can come in handy. This cuts the challenge by 75%. In addition take inventions to get the mecha legs to move faster and also reduce the effectiveness of chill/cripple immobolize.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

I will try to remember this and post my build as soon as I get home from work. It is a scrapper with soldier (I think) and berserker mix using medic, Bulwark, cleanse and shredder gyro. With all electric fields and AoEs you not only survive easy but you can fight hoards of enemies at the same time and do great damage.

Abuse blinds. You have so much of it at your disposal using the metabuilds.
Remember to blast water when you get low, lots of that too.
