Help me decide, I'm at loss!
Kits are mandatory, yes. But in open world you can play anything u want
Learn to love the hobosack. It’s not going anywhere. The only build I’m aware of that uses no kits is the full turret PvP build, but that’s the farthest thing from open world/dungeon viable. There’s nothing inherently broken about either profession, although each has a few things that need to be tweaked.

Engineer is one of the best classes right now. Whoever told you they were bad has no idea what he’s talking about or just miserably failed at playing one himself, because they indeed are hard to play.
Openworld everythin is cool but dungeons, kits is the way to go!

If you don’t like the backpack then don’t play Engi because kitless builds are extremely suboptimal! Plus the Ranger is the easiest class to play! On the other hand if you get over your backpack hate, a well played Engineer is better than the Ranger at pretty much everything in every game mode!
Wahoo! Bye frands!
Ranger is a pain in the kitten to play in PvE, but yea he’s quite easy in PvP. What do you want to focus on btw?

Is this true?
As for Ranger vs. Engi, what I mostly look at is the fun factor. Being better or not is just for information purposes.
I tried an 80 Ranger on my brother’s account and so far I liked the gameplay that S/D and LB offers. It feels fun, fast paced, but that’s about it, no big surprise.
On the other hand I tried a 20 Engi dual pistol and rifle. I didn’t enjoy the rifle (is it an important weapon?) as it felt kinda slow, but I really did enjoy pistols. I know that there’s more to it and I shouldn’t base my opinion on a lvl 20 char. But so far it has been refreshing (pistol skills were pretty fun)!
As for what I’d like to focus, I’d say mainly open world, exploration, puzzle jumping, some few dungeons and not too much competitive PvP for the meantime (I already have my Mesmer for that).
But what I do enjoy in general is fast paced/active gameplay. I like moving around, feeling quick, etc.
I know Thief could meet my expectations but since my wife already plays one, I can always use hers.
Also, this time, either Ranger or Engi, I want to play a condi based character, I don’t know who’s best at this.
Anyways, I think I’m gonna go with Engi since I always wanted to do a cyber/steampunk-ish looking character!

Hazarding a guess here:
Nilfa, Asura Thief, Devona’s Rest
If you want fast paced then engi is the way to go. It’s more of the piano playing style than ranger; however, Both excel at conditions. Both can be quite mobile as well.
Both classes are good. Both bring great dps and support if speced right to group play. The ranger is the easier class to play IMO especially in open world or PVP because of longbow and bear. If your going for condition spec and playing open world then just play what you think is the most fun. The ranger is still probably king of open world face roll though.
