So yesterday I’ve faced some Power Engineer on my Power Necromancer from Riverside[DE] in Obsidian Sanctum 1v1 couple times and couldn’t really figure out how to beat him. I mean, I did down him couple times but that was purely luck, his failure or just very high RNG crits from myself.
I run 30/0/10/0/30 DS Power build with occassional change to Shadow Fiend from Wurm, build is highly concerned about DS Life Blast perma-crit damage, cooldowns management, good boon stripping/soft CC and very sustain Life Force generation even over longer fights.
To that day I hadn’t much troubles fighting engineers. Most of them are plain SD rifle bursts which die in 2-3 life blasts and have no defense or these perplexity condi engineers which can be trouble as a part of group, but 1v1 It’s been always possible for me to kill them relativly quickly with my build after surviving their initial burst and getting clearcast on LB.
However, that engineer was quite different.
Main problem when fighting him were constant knockbacks/CC. He had toolkit, that’s for sure, standard H. Turret. His constant damage was quite high, he could be running some kind of Staric Discharge. Yet he was quite surviveable, had nice AoE, probably from bomb kit as my Golem was dying very quickly and Automatic Medical Response I believe, because he was placing H. Turret very often. I think he might has been running that pushback on turret explosion trait, also. Overall, during about 7 fights I’ve only won two, as said, mostly because my luck and high numbers, but I’m curious what kind of build that could be.
Ah, he(or she) was running Predator, so Rifle Engi type
Hmm, I would guess HgH bomber, but that is impossible with a turret, toolkit and bombs…
But more likely seems he invested a 30 points in explosions and perhaps had zerker armour?
Perhaps withsitting duck and goggles. He can spam alot of vulnerability with a rifle that way.

For AoE, I don’t really know where it came from. It might be.piercing Golem with shots, but that could be almost impossible due to golem following the target, not running ahead of him. Golem HP in WvWvW is much higher than 10k, nearly 20k so it isn’t that easy to just randomly kill it with piercing or something.
I think that build was not HGH. He didn’t have much might for my boonstripping.
As I say, the most annoying factor was amount of combined CC with knockbacks/pushes mostly (hard to overcome even with triple stun breaks/blinds) + pretty high rifle damage. I’m certain that he had Toolkit and Healing turret.
It’s not that I cry for nerf or something, hell no. I just want to make some future counterplay.
My first clue is a lot of knockbacks. From what I’ve seen, he was running H. Turret for sure and I don’t really remember other turret.
perhaps he was running thumper turret it is a great source of might as it includes 3 blast finishers and 1 knockback without any traits, if he was full zerk his bomb #1 could be hitting up to about 8k, also did he ever use pry bar on you and if he did how hard did it hit for not counting the confusion?

with engi in wvw you are able to get away with less survivability if you use toolkit and shield you have a lot of block uptime especially with toolkit traited where you get 3 seconds of blocks every 16 seconds (almost 20% uptime on blocks just there)
or bombs instead of grenades if you saw one way or the other.
Yes, he did use combo pull+prybar quite often after I was out of endurance, it was hitting quite high I think that’s some variation. However we wasn’t running any shield besides toolkit gear shield, he was mostly rifle

rifle turret as it has the shortest CD or rocket turret as it has it’s own knock + another knock on detonation

Hits very hard, tons of cc and has some nice defensive abilities… Basic premise is to drop big ol’ bomb, magnet pull you, prybar, bob goes off continuing cc chain, auto attack as they get up overcharge shot knocking them down again. Very long cc chains are possible, especially if he has thumper. I imagine with some tweaking we could guess his build.
For traits, are you positive on the 2nd turret besides healing turret? Might have been dropping supply crate. If the blast finishers were knocking you down then it’s easy to guess the explosions line. Safe to assume speedy kits was in play.
For gear Did conditions seem to drop quickly? How much might did he usually have going for him? Was he squishy when you actually landed a good hit? etc.

Power bombs are a ton of fun btw
i’m not sure how you didn’t notice what he used. for example if he used bombs, it would’ve been very obvious. bombs placed on the ground, red circles everywhere. if he used static discharge there would’ve been lightning bolts everywhere. since you didn’t notice these painfully obvious things, it leads me to believe he was using the rifle grenade build. 30/0/0/20/20. lots of control, burst, and damage. and he probably wasn’t using automated medical response because healing turret has a short cooldown and that trait only activates once every 90 seconds.
I wouldn’t assume speedy kits unless you saw swiftness. Lately, I’ve been opting for 20 deep in inventions to get you powershoes for speed and AMR you mentioned for a free HT recharge. It’s also an unstrippable buff.
I agree on the armor – probably a mixture of zerker/knights.
Obviously the exact stats are a bit tough to determine based on mere description. But based on your description, it sounds an awful lot like a WvW build I’ve been running for the last week (got tired of 3-kit condi ). Obviously anything else you can remember would help. Since you’re a power build, you probably didn’t notice how good his condi-clear was, but that is one of the main weaknesses of the build I linked. It also lacks any sort of endurance regen unless you use runes or sigils – was he dodging alot?
