I want to like Engineer as a Profession, after playing both to 30 ish I cant pick..I know the
cliche thing will be " Play what you like man" but I dont get a ton of Gaming time ( Wife aggro, 100% Immune to silence, stun, Fear and confusion ).

When I play the Engi I miss the Op factor in Guard, when I play the Guard I miss how strong Engi feels at range.

Any chance anyone on here has both at 80? How do they both perform in places like Orr if so…Thanks in advance….

My advice is just keep doodling around until the Wintersday patch. Engineers are about to get a whole lot easier to level if ANet keeps their promise to make weapon sigils work with kits.

Honestly, play an Elementalist. Pretty similarly OP to Eng at range and nearly as unkillable as a Guard.

Stinky Garbage, Engineer. Meatbag, Guardian. Dum Dums, Elementalist.

I have an 80 guard, 80 mesmer, and I’m working on my engineer (currently lvl 11). I thought the mesmer was complex, but the Engineer has it beat. Guard is the simplest of the three.

At low levels a Guardian will feel very powerful (like OP). However by the time you get to 80 it’s power feels on-par with the other professions (or even a bit less powerful DPS wise). A guardian can be extremely squishy or extremely robust depending upon the build.

I know you didn’t ask about Mesmer, but for comparison purposes to a guard, the mesmer is very underpowered until level 40-ish. At that point it picks up and becomes a complete powerhouse at level 80.

I don’t know how Engineer will turn out at 80, but I’ve been PvPing with mine and I have to say it can be as survivable as the Guardian, or even more so (amazing I know). The amount of CC with the Engineer seems incredible compared to the Guardian.

You’re well off with either choice — you can even play both if time allows (which it sounds like not).

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

You should read the tankcat post. It’s a pretty fun build plus he just added a video. Oh that is if you like to wvw or pvp.

Hi phobia! I know you are probably looking for another opinion, but I’m going to followup a bit on things I mentioned before.

As juno mentioned above, Guardians start out feeling very powerful at lower levels while Engineer can feel pretty weak. I didn’t mention that it took me quite a while to cut through mobs as a non-80 Engineer and it is certainly more work to level an Engineer than a Guardian because of this. As an Engineer, I feel like I have to be a bit more on my toes as mistakes can be a bit more costly.

However, after hitting level 80 and getting some exotic gear, I feel like the Engi has an answer for everything. I also think they offer a much more versatile playstyle than Guardian. I’ve found 2 builds on my Guardian that I like to use and they’re very effective. However, playing my Guardian can be quite stale some times.

I have several builds that I use on my Engineer and every day I’m still trying out new things; I’ve got 500 hours on the Engi alone!

One of my favorite things about Engineer is that I can swap between a pistol/shield + bombs build and a rifle + grenade/elixirs build using the same exact build but different major traits (I use a different set of equipment, too).

My Guardian is the profession I usually bust out when I’m not soloing. I feel it goes a lot better with a group of players whereas an Engineer shines a bit more when you’re alone. I can provide a ton of support for other people on my Guardian while still pumping out good damage and survivability. And when I’m being supported by other people, I become a much larger threat than I would on my Engineer. There is something really nice feeling about using a huge greatsword to carve through swathes of enemies with only a few blows.

In conclusion, it sounds like you should play both classes as your mood changes. Even though this will make you level a single profession to 80 more slowly. :<

Thanks Gkaare, I have finally picked Engi..I know I messaged you in game, and yeah I was just fishing for something that pushed me over the fence. I think it was WvW though, I felt helpless on the Guard ( I know, zero traits really at 30 ) but I had way more fun on the Engi…Prob not the best reason, but works in my Pea brain

i find i can often revitalize my waning interest in a profession by trying a new build and new utilities/weapons.

sometimes you just have to find the right combination of things to make it feel right and fun.
