Hobo Sacks: A Terrible Fashion Statement
This too is something I would like to see changed. +1’d
Totally agree.
This argument stopped making sense once I discovered these vanity backpacks.
Now it’s just another lame excuse for something they basically forgot to change along the way…
Yes, you beat me to it. I really don’t think it’d take a huge effort to change anyway. Maybe if we keep this thread up it will get more attention. Or perhaps maybe there’s another way to get ANET’s attention?
It may seem petty to some, but I really would like this to change. I spent a good amount of time leveling my engineer and I’d feel bad if I just dropped it and never touched the profession again because of simple things like this.
100% Agreed, put those art team guys to work instead of having them play nerf wars in the office while the level designers and pvp balance guys sweat and work like slaves.
Welp, I know what I’m going to work on in Maya now.

+1 I hate having a lovely set of armor on my Sylvari and then I have this hobo packpack that my character could fit in slung accross my back.
Arenanet, if you can’t give us skins, atleast reduce their size until you can give us skins. They don’t NEED to be that big.
Make it happen: +1
I have to say I really love my Ascended Hobo Pack of doom, I went to a lot of effort to get it. One of my fellow Engineer Guildies almost kittened in his pants when he saw it. I think he thought it was a craftable item.
+infinite #‘s
Tell me about it. Here I am, Norngineer in T1 Cultural … lookin smexxy as hells. Then, I use a Kit, and our gal’s fashion sense goes down the toilet faster than ticked-off Quaggans foo up a Krait’s day.
While we’re at it, I’d also love (even Gem-bought) skins to differentiate our weapon kits/turrets. I’d go around swiping Asura tech, along with the usual Steampunk look.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Even though it’s not a backpack, I wanted to show you guys that apparently there is a cultural version of at least the FT.
Whilst out in the world, I found this Asura Flamethrower.
Makes you wonder why my Asura is forced to run around with ‘Bookah’ junk; when he could have had a genuine Asura certified flamethrower of pure genius.

I’m bumping this. After getting my superawesome molten jetpack, it… well, it will get erased by any kit with a hobo sack. Maddening.
More or less shameless bump.
Also got the Jetpack, and still waiting for the fated day it can replace my kit hobo sacks!

These yankess don’t know what we’re about son. Soon they’ll be tryin’ a take our grenades from us too. (spits) Well, they can take them…
…from my charred dead hands.
Colin Johnson said he is working on the hobosack issue. He realized it was an issue when he tried to put on the 8 bit backpack and it covered the backpack up.
Finally. Not like we haven’t been whining about kit hobosacks since day 1 of headstart (some as long as beta).
My vote- make the kit hobosack hideable, like the regular hobosack. I don’t care if you add a buff, nameplate, whatever over my head alerting all to what kit I am using; that is fine by me. If they really need to see a backpack to figure out whether I am using the alchemy gun or grenade kit, then so be it- give them a giant sign to look at and go “OH! That huge gun spitting flames all over the place isn’t a medkit! Good thing they told me, I would have mistaken that for sure!”
Just… let us hide the stupid hobosacks.
as much as I love this, it won’t happen.
The hobosacks serve an important purpose, telegraphing to other players what skills you have. Much like how you know what a warrior can do when they have a rifle equipped, players need to know what an engineer can do when they have a kit out. While this is a non-issue for the flamethrower and the elixer gun, the others either have very small weapons (tool) or none at all (’nade and bomb).
I’m not too keen on this method as a) the sacks aren’t that visually distinct (especially on an Asura) and b) you don’t get to see much of them if your target is facing you.
I would love to see the sacks go away, but that would require them putting in weapon “skins” for the bomb and grenade kit and likely reworking the wrench for the tool kit to make it more obvious which is which.
Whenever I hear this argument, I immediately think of the stupid people in infomercials. You know the ones- given simple, very easy to do tasks and they fail miserably at it, so they need some completely useless thing to help them accomplish it.
If I’m running around spitting flames from a huge gun, a backpack is not going to help someone determine my skillset if they haven’t figured out I’m not wielding the grenade kit yet.
The game shouldn’t be geared entirely around stupid people. Yes, concessions can be made, but if they can’t see the obvious already, I shouldn’t be made to suffer in order make it even more painfully obvious.
I don’t feel safe with my grenades in a backpack anyway
I don’t feel safe with my grenades in a backpack anyway
Lol, I like this.
I would love if we could get rid of the hobo sacks. I want to see my jetpack all the time!
Jade Quarry
I want this more than my long awaited “Explosive shots count as explosions” update.
Make it happen. I dont want a bag appearing from nowhere when even the animation shows that you get the grenades and bombs from your belt/coat.
I do not see the point of the kitten hobo-sacks, they should adapt the dye of the chest piece equipped atleast or gain unikittenfects according to the exotic piece, tbh just bomb and grenade kits actually need a hobo-sack, the rest do not.
+1 to this thread, and a shameless bump
+1 Give us a toggle to hide or show hobo-sacks.
+1 want an official response :c especially now with an almost 200g worth backpack being hidden.
i agree with this, just want to up this with reply
because he doesn’t know it himself
This a real question.
If we continue to bump this thread is there actually a chance that officials will read it and take it into consideration?
I am asking this because, if not, I would be willing to find another way to perhaps get their attention.
Hey guys so you know, if you want this issue to be addressed; make sure to +1 the OP, that’s how ANet checks to see which topics/posts are hot.
oh god, I lol’d.
Totally agree with this. Personally I would like to get rid of those hobo sacks and see our weapons in stowed positions when i use my kits, but obvious allow an option to turn on the hobo sacks for people who do like them.
This a real question.

We could send them cupcakes with designs made out of sugar that are hobosacks with a red cross symbol over it to convey our message. They seem to like cupcakes.
Okay, so what if instead of getting rid of hobo sacks, you just gave them appropriate skins according to the backpack? That would be a hell load of work, honestly, since it would require six new textures per backpack. But a Quaggan backpack holding bombs or a Super Adventure Box Elixir Gun would be slick as hell.

Hopefully this will get addressed in today’s patch!
Honestly, just make them hideable. Give me a visible “buff” that shows which kit I am using. Hell, put a big icon by my name that shows it (a flame if I use flamethrower, a grenade for grenade kit, etc)… just let me hide this stupid backpack!
lmao. Wow.
…
That is too accurate an assessment of our class >_>
Hopefully this will get addressed in today’s patch!
So much for that hope. sigh
It will happen eventually.
And thus a shameless bump has been applied.
And now two new cool backpacks. It’s like they are taunting us. I read that one engineer bug fix with fruitless hope.
Do not fear my engineer brothers, for one day that patch will come and the rejoice will be great! Until then keep bumping!
Do not fear my engineer brothers, for one day that patch will come and the rejoice will be great! Until then keep bumping!
At this point Im starting to wonder whether it will happen in 2014, though :-\
Yeah Im pretty sure it wont happen anytime soon but still..itll come someday! Hopefully we’ll have it by next year at most :S
Anyone know if the new backpack covers them up? The tentacle one…
(edited by Valar Morghulis.7049)
UPDATE: Nope, the tentacle back piece is replaced by the kits.
I was thinking that my kits were just bigger than my back slot item and that is why I couldn’t see them, but it completely removes your back slot and then adds the look of whatever kit you equip.
Most are smarter than I and probably already knew this, but wanted to clarify if for anyone else :p
This is also a “bump” to get Anet to do something about this
Possible solutions:
1. When back slot item is “checked” it trumps any/all kits (not sure how this would work for FT or EG, would you still have the gun but not the pack or would your hands be empty or holding your rifle/pistol).
2. Make kits and back slot items show on your character at the same time (this currently happens when you equip or “check” a back slot item while in a kit).
-This can look really odd, but it is better than what currently happens.
3. Shrink the size of kits and allow #2. This seems the simplest “fix” and would only be a problem for very small or oddly placed (flower) back slot items.
4. Turn off the look of the packs for nades, bombs and wrench and leave hands empty/wrench only or add a bomb/nade in hand instead of standard weapon. This would not correct the look for FT and EG, but they have more of a reason for needing the packs. (Also could do this and #2 and #3…)
5. Best idea, but most complex is to have MANY different skins for each kit and let player choose. That, or make it so that each visible back piece in game morphs differently with each kit to give a new look.
-EXAMPLE: Flamethrower with the new tentacle back slot item would make flaming tentacles swirling around. Tool Kit with new tentacle back slot item would have robotic tentacles with tools on the ends of them. (I know, I know, never going to happen, but an engi can dream can’t he?)
+1
I agree that those backpack are more uggly than elephant man power 100.
Now that is say, as a Thief, I DON’T kittenING NEED TO SEE THEM TO KNOW WHAT KIT THEY kittenING USE. How can I be stupid to the point that I don’t UNDERSTAND, that a engineer that bombard me with grenades isn’t using a grenade kit ? How can I don’t understand that a engineer running right and left, flaming all he see, isn’t using a flamethrower kit ?
You can see the weapons used by others classes but not those used by engi ? Kidding right ? You see a guardian using a hammer 1 time in tournament, you know his using a hammer, you don’t give a kitten about this time and continue to play. You see an ingee launching grenade or landing bombs, then you forget it was the case after that but remember the guardian was using a hammer ? No. You remember for the two of them, that’s all.
There’s no gameplay affect in WvWvW. 25vs25 you see that THIS engee is using the GRENADE kit by the visualisation of the backpack, or by the visualisation of the 40 grenades that are landing on your sweet face ? The 40 grenades.
PvE ? What the hell those the mob cares about ?
Those excuse aren’t good enough to kill the aesthetic and charachter that someone took plenty of hours to build and customize.
ANET : You’re giving plenty of different backpack skin in the previous weeks, for the customisation, aesthetics of the players.
You have one of the most customisable charachter game running for the time, and surely for the next 10 years. And you didn’t even think of that before ?
Why the engee won’t be able to have their customisable backpack like all other classes ?
Did they play the recent karka event for nothing ? What for those 2 new backpack that they can’t see on their charachters ?
It’s a must do : Give the engineers the option to hide/show kit in the Character screen, or in the General Option like a backpack.
Players don’t need them to play, and those who don’t like to see them must have the right to not see them.
Hope that this post will continue and that engineers will post again and again and again to the purpose of change the mind of ANET, and that they do it VERY soon.

I support the idea of an option to hide the engineer kit 100%. I don’t really want to play my engineer anymore as the kits look so awful and hideous. I know, ‘taste and preferences’.
Why is there an option to hide gloves and shoulder gear but not for the kit. It is definitely possible to implement this and engineer have asked for this time and time again.
The most important point is that the game takes the styling of the characters as one of its top priorities, especially for the ‘end game’ as all is about customizing and skins. What is the point of having a neat looking gear if there will always be this obtrusive grenade kit or med kit. It just doesn’t add up.
There also have been suggestions that you could add custom kit skins to the store which you could apply to a new gear slot for example.
So for the love of this game, please give us the option to hide it.
+1, again. And also another thread in the suggestion forum to get their attention: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Engineer-kits-respect-the-hide-back-option/first#post2056323
2 are better than one!
Also waiting for hide option, i want to burn enemies with flamethrower in my hands and jetpack on my back. Please ANET! Let us hide our hobo sacks!
I’m in favor of customized kit appearances but I really wish they’d stop destroying the “look and feel” of the game by adding completely out-of-character items.
Like plushie Quaggan backpacks.
Sorry, I’m sure they’re popular enough, but you can’t go around creating a game where the main content is clearly meant to be “serious business” and then give everyone plushie stuffed animal backpacks. Or chef suits. Or dapper hats. It would be like playing a Star Wars game where every third Storm Trooper is wearing pink bunny slippers and a plushie face-hugger helmet because they bought them from the cash store. Totally ruins the environment.
I liked what Pirates of the Burning Sea did by adding a great deal of cash-store customization options, but they were all actually in theme.
A game that’s 100% WvW

Instead of backpacks, maybe they can turn the kits into fanny packs? :P
I think engies should have some sort of steam-powered exoskeleton on their right arm.
After all, they are attacking people with wrenches and crowbars, dealing as much damage as a swordsman. AND they are using a wrench. That means they are fighting with sheer brute force.XD

Fanny pack + robotic arm.. WANT NAO
I was thinking about a steam-powered engine as a backpack.
