Q:

I’ve just started a boosted-to-80 Engineer today.
Can anyone point me in the right direction (top three forum threads/posts) where I could read how to set up my build and gear for PvE?

I’m looking for something that has incorporated:
a healing turret,
at least one pistol,
is hopefully great party support even when with only one friend,
can get out of a pickle approx. every 20 seconds (vs. knockdown/stun/immobile type stuff),
and can offer something valuable to the bigger fights (i.e. bunker support / debuffing enemy / etc…).

I appreciate any assistance anyone can offer me.
Thank you!

A:

I suggest The Engineers Hand Book by Wolvineer; I’ve never been able to wrap my mind around a rotation.

I would recommend going condi p/p, about what skills to take, im not sure, normally is recommended to take 3 condi kits, but maybe you want to try something different, slick shoes might be interesting for you

PvP Rifle Engi player no matter how dark the meta is.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I’ve found them helpful.

[Now for some small backstory:]
My character theme, for immersive / character style purposes, was based on a star ship captain. She was a Field Medic & Surgical Doctor and a casual Mechanic & Computer hacker who used Pistols & Explosives in combat.
She was a Star Wars TTRPG character I played a while back and Engineer is the class best suited to her.
Also, I’ve found Elementalist to be fairly fun and versatile, so I figured this should be interesting to play as well.

Strangely enough, I play a very survivable (with decent damage) team oriented Thief as my main (ninja nurse styles).

I will return here sometime after playing my Engineer some more and see if I’ve found a good rune/skill/trait combo.

That has been handed off to a new caretaker. It’s mentioned in the stickied thread with a new link.

So – I’ve specced for pistols, explosions, and cond. damage, generally. I’m really enjoying it so far.
I still have to finish gearing up (changing it from Soldiers to other things with more Precision and Con.Dmg. included).

I’ve managed to incorporate a few turrets, the flamethrower kit, and grenades kit – all with adequate support and/or debuffing abilities. (vulnerability prominent in build)
I’ve been using the flamethrower, for close range – especially when I want to use the stability and might it adds with my spec.
I use the grenades for more range and aoe – especially when there’s a larger group of people to take the heat off me.
I use the pistols rarely due to my lack of specialized gear, but I intend to give them more of a whirl once I finish mixing up my gear.

In conclusion, it’s a unique class to play… and challenging, but I’m finding a build that’s working for me.
Thanks everyone!

BIG thing to learn for Engi is blinds, against anything without a breakbar it’ll pretty much make them incapable of doing damage to you if you rotate your Mortar/Bomb blind fields with Pistol3 and Flash Grenade (FT blind too if you want/use it). If you need extra defensive tools there are 3 good options in Elixir Gun (Stunbreak, Heal/condi removal, and Acid Bomb is great power damage but also can be used to leap back in retreat), Toolkit (Prybar is good, as is magnet, but mainly the 2s Block), or Elixir S (60s reuse stunbreak/invuln to escape a bad situation, and also 3s stealth toolbelt skill for slipping past baddies).

Anyways, with a setup with Grenade/Bomb/Mortar you can do something like run up and engage while you drop a mortar 4 blind field on the enemies, swap pistol and blowtorch (if you have streamlined kits up you can swap bombkit first to pull things in tight too), drop grenade barrage and swap nades to drop shrapnel and freeze grenade, then swap bomb to drop smoke bomb, fire bomb, concussion bomb, then back to grenades and drop poison grenade then flash grenade. Something like that, Engi takes some improvisation as your damage ‘rotation’ is going to get screwed up by the time it takes to work in blinds, and your blind rotation may not need to go the full round and you may engage another enemy before cooldowns are off. Just kind of learn to adapt and keep track of your cooldowns as you rotate through a priority list.

IMO Engi is the easiest profession to play taking on groups of trash as again you just blind them and burst them freely without taking much if any damage, and if you do healing turret is fantastic with high healing and an interrupt for nearby foes. Champs and enemies with breakbars you can just range or melee if you’re good [we can have a surprising amount of dodges if traited(adrenal implant)/geared(energy sigil, not really needed/recommended) for it, plus blocks]

Rabid is not a bad way to start playing condi, though realize toughness does make an impact on aggro though outside of raids not one that you can rely on, but it is noticeable. Mostly Vipers is ideal, and just like berserker gear, you might find it easier to play once you get the basics down as cutting down fight time can be better than making the fight easier.

These suggestions of course are a bit more intricate and button intensive than a FT build that you refer to, but in the end it’ll be shorter fights, still easy once you understand it’s usage, and it’s good team support in that the blinds don’t just work for you but the entire team.

Thanks very much!

I am all over stealth, damage to heal, and blinds on my Thief, so I will analyze my abilities further (and sort out a more specific rotation than the flamethrower + spam-other-stuff that I usually do). XD

I finally understand break bars thanks to a helpful player I met the other night too. Some days, I just feel so noob. >.<

Once I’ve identified more of my individual moves on the Engi., I’ll return to this thread to readdress the specifics once more.
