I’m tight on room to try new professions. How would I know if playing engineer would be fun for me? Can you describe as plainly as possible what an engineer playstyle is like and what they bring to the table in dungeons/pvp etc?

Create engi character and play it for a few hours.
Did you enjoy it?
Yes: Have fun!
No: Delete it.
Now you know whether playing engineer is fun for you.

I must warn you, engineer is no easy class. To do well in it, to get to the level of some other classes requires considerably more work.

Getting good in it requires a lot of practice. I’ve mained an engineer and I’ll admit I’m still not good at it.

Engineers, ill put it into some things I find that the engineer excels out.

-Tanky. Engineers tanks often rely on the infinite swiftness/vigor setups. They are great tanks and point controls.
-CC. Engineers are the masters of CC. Every spec you do will have atleast 1-2 major cc skills.
-Condition Cleansing. With elixirs and elixir gun, our condi cleanse in support is great. Some of the best.
-Condition pressure. WE can apply just about every condition in the game when traited correctly, and quickly. This is mostly done with grenades, hence why the HgH grenade spec is considered the best.

Engineers required these things to be played…

1. High APM. APM is actions per minute. You will be constantly pushing buttons. Non stop. You’ll be dancing with the game and the keyboard will be your dancefloor.
2. Dodge management. Most of our specs do not have a lot of escapes. We dont have teleports, easy 1 hit button invisibles. Our main escape elixir S. It is by far the most popular. Sadly, you can’t use any skills and it is on a 60 second cooldown untrait. So knowing when to dodge and when not to is very important in playing a engineer.

3. Environment. Many of our CC skills require setup. When you use your rifle pushback, you will also be pushed back, making sure you dont fall to your death is very important. Big ol bomb? IT has a fuse, timing it and making sure the enemy stays near it is the only way to make sure it does its job. So setting up fights in the environment is very important.

I’ll repeat again, this class is not easy. Many other classes you may be able to master in a few weeks and you can achieve a large reward in terms of gameplay for doing simple things. This will not happen with the engineer.

I highly advise with choosing an engineer. It presents you with a challenge. It is a very fun class that only the elite play.

Engi is fun as hell. It is a profession that some could find difficult to play, not everyone has the same kind of finger dexterity. My roommate watches me play sometimes and he just says there is no way he could ever play Engi because of it.

Engie is fun, and very utilitarian, does moderately well in all modes of the game with certain builds, but there are a LOT of skills that are NOT great, and we are limited to a few focused templates because of it.

I have put months into my Engie, and can do all types of things in the game pretty well, farming, dungeon runs, sPvP, WvW, and whatever else is going on at the moment, my toon can do it pretty well.

As Jacks of all trades, however, we are truly masters of none, and there are some pretty glaring issues that range from traits broken in perpetuity, through illuminating the holes in the combat system because of the rigorous analysis necessary to focus an Engie build.

And because we have access to many skills and abilities from other professions, we get more nerfs per patch typically than most other professions, indirectly as well as directly. It can be truly demoralizing to focus a build around a few specific mechanics and then have them taken away as being OP, when in reality, they barely put us on par with other professions in certain categories.

If you don’t mind tinkering with builds, having multiple sets of gear, and spending hours at a time trying to test your skills and time things like combo fields for maximizing your utility on runs, then roll another profession.

Eles are quite good atm.

I don’t know how to describe the engie gameplay because there isn’t a similar class in other games such as rangers or thieves. I can agree that you will always be pressing a lot of buttons as you swap back and forth on your kits. It feels more action packed.

Probably the most fun class in the game, simply thanks to it’s adaptability and versatility, however it comes at the price okittenward utilities, self CC skills and some RNG factors to consider, which can be costly when running heavy elixir based builds. However well played Engie’s are a nightmare to predict and deal with thanks to being able to bring anything to the fight, and sometimes even things the Engie doesn’t plan on.

It does require a little keyboard dexterity, but it’s more than worth it.

Save my heart tomorrow.

And yet, even when nerfed, my eng managed to take out a GS warrior (since we all know warriors keep getting buffed) in WvW the other night. I attribute it less to player skill than to speed and cc. The only thing eng really needs, imho, is to be able to dodge more, but I understand there are ways to do that.

Shoot from your belt buckle? Check

Whack someone with a pry bar? Check

Bop someone with a battering ram? Check

Fumigate and Acid Bomb? Check

Burn’em with a Flame Thrower? Check

Drop a Supply Crate on them? Check

Honestly, the Engi is the most fun, hands down. Nuff said.
