I was finally starting to pick up the basics of engineer when the balance patch dropped. Now LB rangers are everywhere in sPvP games, and I need some tips on how to fight them.

I’m using the rifle/kit build I found here:

Any tips? Do I need to change my build? Is this a L2P issue, or are rangers generally a good counter to engis?

With that build, I would use the magnet pull to get them in range to use pry bar, blunderbuss, overcharge shot. use net shot to keep them there longer, and so on. As well, you could simply grenade the heck out of them. you have the same range they do, 2 dodges, and a low cool down tool kit block.

Check roster.
Ranger?
Respec for that trait that makes turrets reflect stuff.
Equip a shield.

Congrats, rangers now kill themselves AND you get to be a kitten head turret engineer.

With the vigor uptime, I have no real problems just dodging rapid fire and the knockback, putting CC on them then unloading.

Elixir S stealth + magnet pull +prybar into blunderbuss will pretty much guarantee their eventual death.

Wtf is that inventions variant? No vigor and not even energy sigil? Is it to facetank hambows and other stuff cuz you don’t have dodges?
Also traiting for fortified turrets is a horrible idea. Inventions line is a kitten traitline basically.
How to counter rangers? Avoid rapid fire by dodging(oops you can’t cuz you run inventions) or toolkit block it. Get in melee. Press buttons for 5-10s till ranger dies. Most of your buttons work for this so you can randomly press them and win.

Anyway to deal with LB Rangers, just load em up with condis! They have very little condi removal! Try to get close to them! Use Gear Shield, stealth, or Magnet to get within melee range! Then make sure to land your grenades! Overcharge Shot is your most important ability! Make sure to land it! Also don’t let them free cast! If a Ranger is off point just pelting you or your teammates, throw some grenades in that direction!

Condis, gear shield, magnetic shield and dodge. Don’t let them get distance and use your magnet to yank them from high ground areas.

Turret reflect chain is ultimate counter if you can manage it corretly you will have almost perma reflect:-) Try my build and you will love those new rangers:-P

Vee Wee does not recommend running a turret build in PvP! It’s just not a good build! The celestial Engi as well as condi Engis really dont’ have a hard time with Rangers at all! Vee Wee recommends running an actual build that’s useful against other things besides longbow Rangers, which aren’t even that good anyway! If you are having trouble against them, just practice and use the advice that Vee Wee gave previously!

I usually have no problems, your normal shield and gear shield is enough to stop the damage from them. It’s pretty entertaining to throw a gear up and watch 10-15 blocks pop up.
After that it just a crowbar to the face and load up your other condi’s.

As a condition engineer – nades, bombs or both – you can use you`re enviroment to fight. In WvW roaming a simple tree is enough to stand behind and let the ranger push his whole range dmg into the bark. you just sometimes get beside the tree to throw some grenades and load them up with conditions. So they can`t even harm you untill they go close range ^^

Empathic bond (?) with pet clears 3 conditions every 10 seconds and they get a few other clears if they’re traited correctly, but the pet one is huge. Kill the pet and then condi the kitten out of the ranger. Reflect is also hugely useful.

That was not a LB build ranger. That was regen ranger that just so happened to have a long bow. my point in mentioning the difference is that it is not the “new LB ranger” that the OP is referring to. It is simply an old build with a new weapon. The current band wagon that everyone is jumping on is high damage gear and traits, using the range as safety, to compensate the lack of survivability.

simple:
TK #4 or shield #4 for the inevitable arrow-spam, close in with EG #4 or TK #5, spam nades pb, done.

for rifle/power roamers:
TK#4 if you see thee arrows flying, netshot, jumpshot, unload your preferred rota.

if you happen to have elixier U:
troll them with a wall, most of them spam their LB skills anyways, regardless what might cause them to kill themselves.

Speak for yourself. Perma-vigor+shield reflect+magnet=embarrassingly defeated LB ranger. At least it has proven so as far as I am concerned.

Kidding aside, rangers are awesome as artillery class and areal denial, but as soon as you close the gap, most LB builds are subject to stomps. So far I only know of one ranger that is equal to me in terms of won/lost 1v1’s and his build does not even include any bow.

ive killed a lot of unprepared enginer by switching between longbow and GS, its all about cycling cooldown block and interupt. Most idiots assume ranger that use longbow only use one weapon and not both, well they are sadly mistaken.

That is because most due. It is what happens in this game when something new is changed that makes it seem either OP or just plain easy to play. “The curse of warriors past”, lets call it. So yes, as the “johnny come lately’s” flock to it, it will tend to mean that most are bad.

So tell me, why are you here on the engineer forums pretending like you could easily dispatch everyone here? Why don’t you post a video of you exquisite destruction of engineers?

The biggest enemies of the longbow ranger are: trees, bushes and let we not forget, grass. Try to use the environment to the fullest, that will do miracles for surviving against them. Also, try to close the gap after they used their first RF, rangers (the badly played ones) tend to get confused and panic when you do that.

Thanks guys, I’ve been trying a lot of your suggestions and I’m having a bit more success. I’m having a blast, though the skill floor for Engi is quite high!

Spam confusion on them (+ burning and other condies) = win. Period, they can’t cleanse it fast enough. They pew pew (confuse) themself to dead.
