I’m about to 0-80 my engineer fairly quickly due to tomes/crafting (I never played the class much and had tomes pile up from doing fractals, so I figure I might as well put them to use). Consequently I don’t really have a lot of knowledge on the in’s and outs of the class (I got to level 30 playing the class normally and then worked on other classes, so I have a basic understanding how the condi rotation works and such).

Thing is I rarely see many engi or scrapper at the higher fractals and if I do it’s the burn viper engi no one lugs a hammer around. So I’m just curious how the end game for engineers go, do I even need scrapper unlocked to get the most out of this class in PvE?

The problem with engineer is that it requires a significantly higher degree of skill to play well, and to be meta you do need to play well.

Engineer is second only to elementalist in terms of theoretical DPS, but that is very difficult to put into practice.

It is tough that’s true. But my first level 80 was an ele so I’m used to pressing a lot of buttons and making peace with the fact that I’m one squishy tree (although my engi is an asura… Squishy midget then).

My question is, is the play style fun and rewarding? Or can a burn zerker do what burn engi do using like half the effort (cuz if that’s the case I’ll be pretty sour…)

More buttons to push in rotation, yes. Much longer to learn than any other class – questionable at best (especially if you’ve gone from 0 to 80 on the class). “Difficult”, not at all.

Scrapper DPS/utility/survivability is crazy good. Meta build is not hard to figure out (no more so than tank chrono or ele tempest to compare to in PvP). Of course, no where near mind-numbing rotation of a Warrior or Rev.

Here’s the thing, in PvE, you don’t need to be 100% perfect with Scrapper by any means…you can’t even play that way in PvP/WvW so no worries. You have so many ‘free to rotate it in when you want’ abilities plus the escape options plus the CC to change the pace of combat to how you want and still do 95%+ of optimal Scrapper DPS rotation as you want.

TL;DR – Scrapper is easy street – don’t worry about being 100% meta.

you need scrapper unlocked in general pve because there are many times youll appreciate sneak gyro.

even if you think you dont care, sneak helps so much.

as for hammer, its more or less a wash vs rifle in terms of dps, but you use it more often than rifle cuz all the skills are good dps. melee only is a drawback that is often relevant, but hammer is useful and fun.

Scrapper / Hammer engi is great and a better option in raids than the condi engi against everything but the red adds of VG. For a passionate engineer a power equip next to the condi is a must have. Power engi is awesome, trust me. If you got questions, just ask.
