How to Engi
the engineer is an incredibly fun, versatile class. our mechanic is the toolbelt where we gain additional abilities based on what utilities we pick. the playstyle depends on the build, and there are really dozens of build to choose from; anything from glass cannon heavy burst, to sustained damage skirmisher, to hybrid power and conditions, to full on conditions, and even to unkillable bunkers. i suppose the real question is, what playstyle do you enjoy? because no matter your answer, you’ll find it in the engineer.

I kind of like to play a mobile class, one with constant sustained damage and the ability to kind of dodge lots of attacks and be really versatile.. I really wan to survive flamethrower though, cause I love fire. Is there a build like that?
I have just found a build revolving around flamethrower from the intothemist guide http://intothemists.com/guides/1141-juggernaut_ft_build
What type of engineer would play that style, as in what playstyle is that build?

seems a build like you wanted lots of dodges tankyness and decent damage
might as well try that

I think engi is the least straightforward class in the game.
All other classes can fill multiple roles, but with engi, you can fill that same role using quite a few different builds and playstyles.
Questions about the way engi works and its playstyles are really open ended.
the playstyle depends on the build, and there are really dozens of build to choose from; anything from glass cannon heavy burst, to sustained damage skirmisher, to hybrid power and conditions, to full on conditions, and even to unkillable bunkers.
The problem is 99% of those builds are just “Fun” to play, but Not Really effective at killing things.

Ive run heaps of random engineer builds, and i can say that isnt quite true, at least for WvW, spvp is different because of the meta that alot of classes are forced into, so while it is very possible to make a random build work on the engineer in wvw, in spvp we have the same problems as every other class.
Well for PvE: Explosives all the way. Bombs, grenades, elixier gun, healturret. Important: vulnerability on crit. With bufffood you manage to stack 25 stacks by you own, without you can keep up 15 stacks. Use many combo fields ’n finisher and have fun.
However Engineer is very stressful to play since you are constantly switching kits for combos.
Oh yes and never use main hand weapon skill 1.

disagree. all of those builds can be played even in pvp. maybe not high level pvp, but few people are at that level. the glass cannon SD, the rifle control skirmisher, the hgh hybrid build, the standard full condi engi, and the engi bunker. all have seen playtime in pvp.

I am very confused about how the engi works, how their profession mechanic works and what their playstyle is. I don’t understand them at all. I am thinking of making one but I’m confused about how they work and what their playstyle is. Can you basically explain the engineer profession for me please.
The engineer has access to a bit of everything and can mix things up with interesting combinations (and I don’t just mean fields and finishers). I recommend these videos about some of the combos. To me, combining and chaining diverse skills is what defines the profession.
