Hows the aoe nerf going to affect Engineer?
Just be mindful that if it hurts us, it hurts everybody else.
I have a feeling not much is really going to change across the board how the Engineer compares to other classes given whatever their plan is affects all classes equally.
Ummm, what? Net Shot (Rifle 2) is Aoe? Elixir Gun auto-attack is AoE? and I would almost call Poison Volley AoE by the way it spreads. The way I see it we are pretty low of the list of professions being hit by this.
I may play this all wrong however, I’d like to hear more on both sides of this.
We are actually getting hit pretty hard with this since we spam #1 on the Grenade kit quite a bit and that means that we need to invest in a pain relief brand.
Many of our skills are AoE, but like one of the posters said, everybody will be hit with this. That will mean that Glass Cannon builds like Berserker’s/Rampagers are going to get a significant buff.
That’s my thoughts.
Davidah (Guardian) Goloith (Engineer)
Achuni (Mesmer) Doreanora (Thief)
They’ll probably hit the grenade kit a bit. Other than that, it probably won’t affect us much. Maybe it will even get us a bit more in line with other classes (with everyone else being hit harder than we will).
Well, at least that’s what I hope for… but instead, they’ll probably just decrease the damage of grenades, bombs and the flamethrower by a flat 50% or so.

All of Bombkit is AoE
All of Grenade Kit is AoE
All of FT is AoE
All of Pistol is AoE (maybe minus Poison Darts)
Half of EG is AoE
All of Kit Refinement Effects are AoE
All of the Engineers comparable burst options are AoE
I would say AoE nerf would affect us pretty good. Most professions in GW2 have alot of AoE focus but usually with an option for single target DPS. We don’t really have a Single Target DPS option.

QFT.
It really comes down to which AoE they’re are going to nerf. Everything that hits multiple targets? Only those effects with a defined area/radius? Only ground targeted attacks? AoE from melee? Direct AoE damage only? . . .
Personally I agree with nerfing AoE and am looking forward to its effects, especially in WvW battles (which are pretty much just ‘AoE Wars’ atm). I only hope the change ends up helping Eng’s balance against other classes, or if not that this is more than made up for with other Eng buffs. We’ll find out in a week . . .

Ya I wasnt trying to be misleading because most other professions have alot of AoE skills so the nerf will effect everyone.
I was just pointing out tht we do have quite a bit of AoE focused skills so I am sure we will notice quite a numbers shift.
Lets just hope those numbers change more for incoming than outgoing.
I only see them nerfing Grenade Kit again. If anything. If they do some sweeping changes. I hope they buff the single target options.
I completely forgot about this, last time I head they were adressing single target attacks being pathetic compared to powerful spammable Aoe, not everything thats aoe. Im not going to break down how everything qualifies to be nerfed, but really the thing that may get nerfed is GK again.
I forgot from what interview but at one point they said that the opportunity cost is too high (Low or high I get confused) if aoe attacks do 8/10 as much damage as normal attacks. That got me thinking, most of out auto attacks are aoe so what would that mean for skills such as flame jet? They cannot just nerf it to 6/10ths as much as other auto attacks or it’ll be worthless. I really doubt its just going to be a flat dmg reduction to all aoes, it will probably go to specific types.
Flamethrower was just starting to climb out of the grave, this will shove it back in.
This would only affect us if they specifically target us for nerfs, or if they implement some blanket aoe nerf. Which iirc they atleast said they wouldnt do.
But suppose they do some pretty broad swoop to aoe in general. It would affect Engineer pretty badly since we are very aoe hevy (compared to other MMOs, GW2 is generally pretty aoe heavy)
But it would also be extra stupid since they just went ahead and described us as "…mid-range skirmishers that can control battlefield in various ways such as with turrets, control skills, AoE, and other ways. “…they are going to be impactful in close range fights and have the ability to control space…”
Then turning around and nerfing our aoe would be a pretty rediculous move, if that is suppose to be one of our strengths.
We have strengths? I thought the design principle for the Eng is that it doesn’t have any strengths but makes up for that with lots of flexibility.
Back on topic, it does sound ominously like Grenades could get nerfed. Hopefully the nerf won’t affect FT, given they’ve just buffed it and its still a little under-whelming.
Don’t forget the flamethrower. Though technically I don’t think it’s an aoe weapon. Area of Effect, indeed meaning an area, but is most commonly refers to skills hitting a 360 area – Flame jet hits in a cone.

It is? I used it to toast mesmers in wvwvw, and I didn’t have juggernaught or deadly mixture – Now if I had both, imagine.
AoE nerf could go many ways without having to nerf actual skills, they will probably either limit the number of targets you can hit down to 3 OR the more targets you hit, the less damage you make kind of thing
So from the SOTG interview, they’re going to push ahead with the aoe nerf.
The sky is not falling. There will not be nerfs to every single multi-hitting ability in the game, ain’t no dev got time fo’ that. There are many more pressing issues that they investing their programming/coding hours into, I’m sure.
How can you say with a straight face ‘THEY ARE GOING TO GO AHEAD, GUYS’ How would you know this? They didn’t give any slight indication any AOE changes were ready to go live on SOTG. Stahp.
