Maybe it’s because I’m just starting to learn the ins and outs of my Engineer, but I don’t really see any issues. You just have to adapt. I’m sure I’ll get flamed with,“I’ve been playing my engineer since beta/release! You just don’t get it!”, but I’m only lvl 35 on my Engineer and having no problems in WvW whatsoever. As far as the grenade kit goes I don’t mind it at all. I only used it during tower/garrison assaults for the most part anyways. Any fight with people running all over is a pain with those grenades. Besides, at least now they’ll benefit from sigils and whatnot.
Ok, commence flaming.
It’s not really scientific but the comparison is something like this:
a glass cannon build for an Elementalist is doing 1200-1500 normal damage /3100+ critical.
a glass cannon build for an Ranger is doing 1500 normal damage/3000+ critical damage
a glass cannon Grenadier build for an Engineer is doing normal damage of 1000-1300 / critical damage of 1400-2400

I don’t know much about the other classes, but for Rangers, you’re slightly off. I’ve played them since release, almost to the exclusion of everything else.
Yes, Rangers can hit for 1.5k normal, but only with the long bow with its horrendous attack speed. And you can also hit for much higher than 3k with as well. Once again with the long bow. However, that’s with Rapid Fire which in on a 10s cooldown.
More realistic numbers would be:
Shortbow: 500 base 1.5k crit
Longbow: 1k base 2-3k crit
Sword: 600 base 1k crit
The main strength of Ranger dps is that most of it is low damage high attack speed.
In a game where every class is a hybrid, it’s engineers who get slapped with the hybrid tax on their potential damage output, while elementalists get to be the ones labelled ‘king of versatility’.
Grenades might still be your best dps option, but it’s the best of a bad bunch.

if you’re telling me that most of the long range damage ranger has is from the short bow, you’re playing the class wrong. in fact, i’d wager that the off hand axe throw does about the same damage on crits as both …wait a minute, short bow’s damage mostly comes from the auto attack. it will never be as good as longbow.
but as far as them being stronger than engineers, yes, they are.
“You just have to adapt.” I bet you’ll be one of the first people to gladly accept the RFID chip.
Engineers have issues but there’s nothing wrong with enjoying playing them. I still play my engineer way more than my other professions because it’s just more fun. Engineers will become crazy FOTM once they get fixed. Look at how everyone is gravitating to eles, and engineers have way more flexibility than them (just at the loss of some viability).
Bottom line—if you’re just gonna be running around killing stuff in WvW, you may as well run around killing stuff with explosives.

That was my thought exactly. I loved doing WvW with grenades because they give you so many options. Unfortunately, now my level 35 Fireball throwing Elementalist is out dps’ing my level 80 full exotic Grenadier.

Quoted for general importantness and particular importantcy.

I’m not flaming you, but you can’t talk at all about how easy it is to adopt since you’ve never experienced how useful nades are especially in higher levels. You said it yourself.
Here’s a scenario for you.
Engineers’ life Post-Patch:
Engi: Spam elixir to stack might, yeah keep it at 20 stacks baby! Nades are the only way to keep up with the damage other classes can do! Ah, my sigil of bloodlust finally reached 25 stacks after XX minutes! Oh, here comes an enemy zerg. Tower defense time! This is where nade engineers thrive!
Spams nades… Pew! Pew! Boom! Boom!
Engi: Oh kitten, kitten! My HP’s down to 30%! Gotta heal. Oh crap! I forgot I spammed my Elixir H to stack might! Oh, kitten I’m down! Ahhhhh, here they come!! Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! My 25 stacks of bloodlust are gone! Fak! Fak! Fak! Fak!
And Engineers lived happily ever after.
The point is, stacking sigils and might takes too long AND we could lose it in an instant, be it PvP, PvE, or WvW. I don’t get why people keep saying Nades are still powerful if you have 25 stacks of might and bloodlust plus we can have 2 sigils while using the grenade kit. They don’t simply understand that OTHER CLASSES CAN DEAL BETTER DAMAGE WITHOUT STACKING MIGHT AND BLOODLUST. WHY CAN’T THEY UNDERSTAND IT?!
QQ!

No he is right. Thief does 3 key-kombo to kill someone – engineer has to play 30 key-piano piece to kill someone. True story – and I still love my engi.
“you just have to adapt” is code for “apply 50% more tryhard to do the same that everyone else does easily”
There’s no excuse for it.
Problem is people are only thinking about pure damage as engineer. Probably running Power/Precision/Critical Damage gear with berseker accessories and Grenade Kit as their only Kit with might elixirs.
It’s just like seeing a 5 signet warrior, laziness.

Pretty much this. Seriously play another class for a bit. We get jipped out of a weapon slot and loose a utility for each kit we want to equip. Some will mention the toolbelt, but many classes get an equivalent bar, e.g. mesmers get shatters that have equal if not better offensive and defensive abilities.
And it isn’t just damage, it’s defense and utility as well. What we give up for kits is not worth it, not by a long shot.
Speaking of toolbelt, a lot of those abilties are seriously weaksauce
The idea is nice; since we don’t do damage we get tons of abilties to do everything right?
Well just taking from my standard loadout, Elixir H, Elixir B, Toolkit, Rocket Boots I see tons of weaksauciness.
- Toss Elixer H; Total joke. I have formula 409 for a cleanse, but it’s still pretty weak
- Toss Elixer B; Also joke. 409, but such a small radius and only being one stupid effect makes it a move you hardly ever even consider
- Throw Wrench; pretty lame. It’s just ranged damage and it sucks too like pistol. The turret repair component is also weak and doesn’t even work most of the time.
- Rocket Kick; This move kicks butt with its heavy burn, but the main rocket boots are pretty weak. It’s just an escape on a long cooldown that also knocks you down. You dont take it for the escape, you take it for rocket kick. It’s just utility/toolbelt slot reversed.
These trifles don’t create the versatility needed.

i’m running tool/nade kits and elixir s.
please, tell me again how you’re right and the gripes aren’t.
