I don't understand
When you said you killed things fast as or faster with flamethrower, I kind of disregarded everything you said.
Because every class from the perspective of a player ever class outside of their class is better unless they’re a warrior or guardian or they’re comparing themselves to an elementalist. Remember that people post of forums when they’re unhappy, which can stem from as much as a 1% damage difference between a rival class that supposedly lost them a fight in WVW.
The Engineer is not the worst class in the game, but it isn’t top tier, which too some people is nerve rackingly horrible and the bane of their usefulness. This is pointless, as from what I’ve read on this forums, 80% of the classes in this game fail compared to 20%. With such a statistic you should be far from bothered, as we know not everyone in competitive pvp roles a warrior or guardian.
There is a common theme in each of the class forums: “Ours if the most brokenest, worstest class, it so bad Ima rage quit unless Anet redesigns it the way I want!”
The Elementalists complain, the Mesmers complain, the Theives complain. They all have threads about how every patch has been nothing but nerfs for their class, and buffs for every other class.
It’s kinda silly. Especially when I would likely have failed to notice this so called nerf. My wvw k/d ratio is still 5:1 on a bad day. But I’ve always focused on 2-5 and used their down time to use skills and fire off control from the riffle.
I guess if I stood still and spammed 1 I might understand all the hate.
Because…
a glass cannon build for an Elementalist is doing 1200-1500 normal damage /3100+ critical damage on a Target Golem
a glass cannon build for an Ranger is doing 1500 normal damage/3000+ critical damage on a Target Golem
and a glass cannon Grenade build for an Engineer is doing normal damage of 1000-1300 / critical damage of 1400-2400 on a Target Golem.
Now these are just casual observations taken from messing around in the Mists but the difference is obvious. This doesn’t even take into account the fact that a grenade is a delay-based AOE that sometimes COMPLETELY misses the target (think WvW open field combat).

And which weapons are they using vs our long range AOE?
No class in the game has anything like it. Some people won’t be happy unless grenade kit auto-attacks at 1600 range with twice the radius and a 4k crit.

This could be meaningless, because you get kill credit just for doing a little bit of damage. You could have 10 people get credit for one kill. So everyone in the game should have absurdly good k:d ratios.
Ars Est Mortem ~ Necromancer
Grenadier has 1500 range, damage radius of 120, no auto-attack, manual targeting, and a long delay for hitting the target.
Elementalist with Fireball has 1200 range, damage radius of 90, can auto-attack, tab/click/auto targeting, medium delay for hitting target.
Ranger with Longbow has 1500 range, no damage radius, can auto-attack, tab/click/auto targeting, short delay for hitting target.
