I just cant do the jungle with the engineer
What exactly is killing you?
You can avoid pretty much everything with some well-timed dodges and good positioning.
Engi is a very active class – probably the hardest in the game next to Ele. You don’t have the survivability or passive defense to tank hits like a Warrior or Guard. You don’t have minions or pets that will hold aggro away from you like Necro, Mesmer, and Ranger (you can slot turrets for this, but they’re kinda bad).
You have to make up for it in other ways. These include: Chaining water/heal combos for sustain. Keeping up high endurance via the Tools traitline, or bunker traits in Inventions and Scrapper.
If you need more, you can slot some defensive skills. I like to run with Toolkit to Gear Shield block heavy attacks rather than dodging. It just takes some muscle memory and practice. Elixir gun is also good for another blast on your water field and a stunbreak+heal.
Hammer comes with a block and reflect – make sure you’re using those and not wasting them.

Hammer and Scrapper are rather meh overall in PvE, a torture really. The traitline issues will force you to go Core. You’ll need Firearms, Tools, Explosives along with the Grenade kit all the time whether you’re Power or Condition.
You’ll need condition duration (Viper gear) and a Flamethrower if going the conditions way now that it’s become a stat.
Otherwise it’s berserker rifle.
Well frogs, snipers and of course champs are a no go even tho i manage them with nearly all my other chars. I see Dodges are my only defense but i wanted scrapper Hammer to work soooo much…thats why i bought the exp first place.
Scrapper lets you play kinda defensively and thoughish, but is not the best way to play in the jungle, because it means you have already exposed yourself to the foes.
In the jungle, speciallly with engie, you need to act before them. Smokescales are a good example: if you nuke them before they see you, they die rather easily.
Champs are serious threats in HoT, it is better to search for a companion or two before fighting them. And the frogs needs you to hit first AND evade correctly. Hammer will be a hard time with them because it isn’t mobile enough.
IMO, the best tool we have in the jungle is very simple: outrun them. Streamlined Kits perma-swiftness is simply the best we have against HoT creatures, because it lets you escape when needed, engage when it is best, and in general, helps you avoid fights you don’t want to do, and get where you want to. In the jungle, knowing when and where to be is more valuable than just killing things.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

So let me get this straight….
1) Buy expansion with your money
2) Select the class that you want to play
3) Run from mobs
4) ???
First oft, i play since the beginning. My first 80 was the engineer. I love the concept. But after a long break i hit a brick wall with hot.
I am dying left and right. I am one, two shotted by everything that moves.
I tried full vit and tough scrapper. I couldnt outheal the damage. I couldnt escape. I couldnt distract with anything like necro or mesmer ofc.
I tried full condi pistol pistol. Damage didnt kill fast enough, couldnt outheal the damage.
Full power feri scrapper, all the same.
Please enlighten me how to engineer. I just love the class too much to quit it for my necro or mesmer (who just kitten the mobs in the junge, even Champions).
Blinds baby, blinds. The enemy can’t hurt what it can’t see.
Pistol 3 + Bomb 4 + Mortar Kit 4 + Grenade Kit 3 + Flamethrower 5 = enemies are nearly permanently blinded unless they are champs or higher, in which case you shouldn’t try to solo them.
And that’s just if you want to play defensively. If you want to play more offensively, you should be up in their face making them miss all their attacks.

I keep seeing these threads and it’s just puzzling. Engi was the easiest class to play in HoT for me. Equip flamethrower and go. I barely ever died to anything.

If you play only to kill everything in the way, there are other MMORPGs that reward that behavior better. GW2 gives more for wisely selecting what and when to fight, and for pure exploration.

Now I am confused. Hammer offers two excellent skills to avoid dangerous attacks:
(+) Skill 4 - Shock Shield
This is a 2 second duration, block-everthing skill. It eats whatever attack your opponents throw at you and it does damage-over-time if you stand right infront of them.
(+) Skill 3 - Rocket Charge
This is a 3x leap attack, granting you the side-effects of dodging while in mid air. You are vulnerable everytime you land on the ground. But this move is perfect to neutralize strong attacks or attack-waves.
If you are playing Scrapper, I would also suggest to equip the bulwark gyro. It drastically lowers the damage you receive and the toolbelt skill is a portable reflective shield-dome 5 seconds duration. Whenever the Itzel Shadowleapers start their volley of arrows, the help you killing themselves.
Hammer 5 - Thunderclap
This is an area stun, for regular monsters and a good option to start the fight agains the small groups of mini-raptors. If your HP drops too fast, you can try using the A.E.D., just activate it, when you see the raports rushing to you.
When you talk about champions, I assume you talk about Hero Challenges? These things are designed to be group-content. There are classes out there which can solo these things in Verdant Brink and a few in Auric Basin. But once the easy ones are done, people either run out of time or HP. Don’t do Hero Challenges solo. If you manage to survive the combat, your dps won’t be enough to finish the job in 10 minutes. Again, we are talking about group content (2 persons or more).
May I ask what build and stats you use?
vit tough condi was the key for me. I specialized in pistol shield explosives and chose the skills for healing so that I could blast finish myself constantly with health.
Elixir was also a great combo with rifle so you could build might and use the elixir gun, rifle, flame thrower and elixir might building to add damage. I’ve yet to see a better heal than the healing turret right now because of the serious lackluster lazyness of the balance team when it comes to this class. There’s a serious problem with the class I agree because potions, bombs/grenades were behind in their overall design and traits in Heart of Thorns, I am hoping they’ll actually fix this class in those specializations in the upcoming expansion because if they don’t that will mean they let this class get behind in 2 count them 2 chances for great balance changes.
I have a post here in the forums for builds I’ll share with you seems to work for me.
Edit: Just in addition if you choose the rocket boots as your gadget for blast finishers it actually creates multiple blasts.

Relative to other professions, I found Engi rather easy; I skipped and tra-la-la-ed my way through HoT with this build:
It’s only gotten better since the FT changes. It’s not AFK-worthy like Minion Scepter Necro, but if you pay attention, it’s quite capable.
I keep seeing these threads and it’s just puzzling. Engi was the easiest class to play in HoT for me. Equip flamethrower and go. I barely ever died to anything.
Some of the enemies still give me trouble like the mushrooms are annoying especially the thrower mushrooms are particularly terrible.
I’ve been using a Power Hammer Scrapper build for open world since I finished unlocking Scrapper. Healing Turret, Flamethrower, Bulwark Gyro, Slick Shoes, Stealth Gyro. That gives you a stun, a knockdown, aoe blind, 2 blocks, water fields, damage reduction, a reflect, cc break, and stealth is OP as an escape.
Inventions > 3 3 2
Firearms > 3 3 1 (kinda FT campy)
Scrapper > 2 3 3
Unlocking Stealth Gyro is probably the biggest advantage to Scrapper for mapping. IIRC I was using a Static Discharge build before that.
You just have to pay attention to what enemies there are and what they do. Like with those problem ranged snipers, I would drop Hammer 5 on them and then leap, and slick shoes everyone else or FT knockback and blind while I burn him down.
But I don’t really play other characters much so idk/idc how it compares to other classes.

So much this…
Who needs dodges? I’ve got BLINDS FOR DAYS!
Just stretch your piano fingers and get playin’.
Condi Engi is easy mode in the jungle, only Reaper and BearBow are easier (and BearBow is less effective than either, just safer).
Run as close to the Viper Condi meta build as you can (http://qtfy.eu/build/engineer#condi_engie) and spam Blind + Chill + all damaging condi’s on enemies and watch them melt. At least one skill per Kit/weapon set can AoE Blind, just cycle through kits/weapons Blinding/Chilling mobs till dead. Not even the terrible Pocket Raptors are a threat and are quickly dispatched with Smoke Bomb + Grenade Barage. Use Big ’Ol Bomb + Orbital Strike + Flamethrower #3 to break most breakbars (including some weaker Champions).
Marvel and Exalt in your ludicrous OP-ness and absolute dominance over the minions of Mordremoth, as you prepare to bring your wake of earth-scorching, flesh-melting, WMD and total chemical warfare to the unsuspecting and unprepared armies of Palawa Joko and Balthazar.
(Seriously, that build is amazing, third highest dps in the game after Tempest and Thief (http://qtfy.eu/benchmarks/), and will continue to be amazing in the new expansion. And, it’s all vanilla GW2 stuff except for the Viper gear and Runes/Sigils – no Elite specs or Hammer or anything).
(edited by kurtosis.9526)
I understand where you are coming from, I used to always die in hot. The build I use now changes all that.
Full dire gear with rune of Balthazar and sigil of smoldering. This is a cheap build (less than 20 gold on tp for full elite armor, accessories, runes, and sigils). Use the standard condition traits, dual pistols, and flamethrower with any other skills that your want. I use rocket boots and flame turret for added fire, mobility, and smoke.
This build revolves around fire skills( you will have 95%+ fire duration and very high condition damage) . I feel this is a better fit than viper for you because though it is reduced damage this build is very tanky(condition damage equivalent of soldier). Your burst damage is still great (12-15k per second in real game not testing environment ) . Because it is condition, you also don’t have to worry about break bars. The rotation is very simple and you can casually go through hot without becoming a piano player. I soloed the arrowhead hero point without crazy skills.
Give it a shot, it does not require a huge investment like viper gear.
