I'm an Engineer because...
The Rifleman’s creed seems appropriate about now
This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will…
My rifle and I know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit…
My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will…
Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.So be it, until victory is America’s and there is no enemy, but peace!
I’m an engie main because we’re awesome, for a bunch of reasons:
1) We’re unique. Really unique. We’re the only class that has under 1s CD utilities, we have no signets, we share our use of only 1 weapon with only one other profession, we essentially have 2 healing slots and 8 utility slots with how our toolbelt works, we’re the only class that can use utility slots to gain extra weapons to switch to, and so on.
2) We can do anything. In the past couple months, I’ve played these different builds:
-Healing bombs
-HGH condition grenade
-HGH Crit rifle
-HGH Crit FT
-Bunker FT
-Bunker Turrets (Dear lord, the CC)
-Elixir Gun Support
All of these builds have been on the same character, all have been radically different, and no one seems to be completely above the other. Sure, grenades deal pretty sweet AoE damage, but if you go conditions you’ll have a bad time with group events. Sure, turrets are squishy and don’t always last long, but the CC they give lets me stunlock/immobilizelock single targets, or contribute to large team battles safely while applying regeneration to all nearby allies constantly.
3) We have so many viable builds. Most other professions have one or two that work, while we have tons to cater to any playstyle. You don’t need to level a new character to play bunker engineer or glass engineer, but good luck doing a good thief bunker or guardian glass cannon.
4) The engineer community seems, at just a quick glance, to be more mature and more friendly than the other professions. People here are posting tons of different builds and guides, and actively trying to make the game better.
5) The skill requirement for playing an engineer properly is a bit higher than most other classes, so we don’t get nearly as many poor players giving us a bad name. It also lets us be proud of being an engie: we’re hard to play, but we still do well.
6) We have far more CC available to us than any other profession. My current rifle/turrets build has, without my three turrets active:
-Immobilize from rifle
-Immobilize from net toolbelt skill
-Knockback from rifle
-AoE Stun from Supply Drop
With all turrets active, I gain:
-Immobilize from Net Turret
-Stun from Net Turret Overcharge
-Knockdown from Rocket Turret Overcharge
-AoE Knockback anytime any turret is destroyed or detonated
7) We look awesome. Sure, hobosacks aren’t the loveliest of things, but we also get flamethrowers! And elixir guns! And a number of other cool-looking skills besides!
Edit:
8 ) We’re, in character, the hardest working profession. The Warrior is a big, dumb rock, and we don’t have his kind of strength. The Elementalist effortlessly channels the power of nature, and we just can’t understand her magic. The Guardian is armored by their faith, but all that means is that they’re a stubborn jerk. We can’t be as nimble as the Thief, and for some reason animals hate us, so we can’t have the Ranger’s pet mastery.
What we do have, however, is our brains. No magic, no brawn, no special tricks, just what we can make for ourselves. So we build turrets; we mix elixirs. We toil long and hard to make that perfect flamethrower. We freely share our products, tossing elixirs we made to our friends. And while those Mesmer get by with their tricky magic, we still win because we made ourselves into what we are.

First character when I got the game because well… bombs and grenades… I love explosions.. but I read the nerfs and… shelved it for a while ( I know I’m such a kid XD ) and played other classes but then I kept coming back because I find Engi more fun
. And while those Mesmer get by with their tricky magic, we still win because we made ourselves into what we are.
Omg, we are Batmans.
Depth.
There are a seemingly endless number of synergies. Most of which are FUN to execute.
9 months in and I still dont have a prefferred build. I do, however, have at least 10 that I enjoy and can win a tourney with.
I play an engi because they’re overpowered.
@$20 an hour! It’s worth it!
The engineer is different and thats why I play it and I like the concept. I also have some, likely lost, hope ANET will eventually fix us up to a standard to meet with the rest.
When I started playing I was intent on pistols and turrets. Man, I may as well have gone and walked onto a freeway because they seem to have pulled everything out of their coding hats to make this the most useless combination in the entire game.
I hope. Until then I throw grenades and enjoy watching a small mass of people fighting near the mobs and I rain terror from miles away from above.
(DOH, now they are going to nerf the 1500 range.)
-I’m an engineer because I was interested in getting a flamethrower and a tool kit.
-Then I’ve been stuck with it because it’s somewhat efficient more or less everywhere. -And I still continue with it just to not look like those mindless greatsword-spinning simpletons, to hell with their stuck-up comments on which we’re useless, if they don’t want to know everything they’re missing it’s not my kitten problem.
-I get the chance to own a HUGE variety of different builds and combinations.
-It also gives me the ability to calm those snotty wannabe pr0 assassin Thieves 1v15 rather radically in PvP.
-Oh, although now it’s not much, I played Engi before it was cool.Haha awesome! I made a warrior, but I run around with a Rifle because it feels close to home. I also vow to never Greatsword and use Dual Axes
Everyone has to LOVE a warrior (you) who forswears Greatsword! lol!
I like playing as one…not because it’s polished, bug free, balanced, overpowered, faceroll, working as intended, etc. I chose the profession I like based on flavor, and play with people I like. Sadly the two reasons I play Engineer have little to do with Arenanet’s vision for the class or their ability to make it function as presented.
Because I loved the beta potential and feel of engineer.
Because after so very many build crippling nerfs, I have a lot of soul bound to my engineer equipment sets in the bank I hope to use one day.
Because changing to another class feels like tacit approval for the lack of dev effort put into this one.
Because I still have high hopes each patch that maybe the next one will see both talent and man hours applied to engineer issues.
Because contrary to what we were promised it’s a large grind for typical players to swap chars in anything but arena mode, and I’ve always preferred open world pvp (wvw here).

Also, I played and mained Engineer before it was cool to do so. Sheer bunch of new HGH*409-Grenade junkies really gets me sick. It’s like “Hey man, I’m playing a class it’s called Engineer, I’ll show you a build I’m sure you never saw that before!” and this being said when the class is slowly getting popular.
And so it begins…
If you are allergic to these ingredients, do not consume.

Yep. Seeing a lot of variations on the name “H GEE H ENGINEER” in tPvP these days. They usually stand above Graveyard or Keep throwing grenades and trash talking in /map.
Engineers are not bad in PvE imo a few of these grenade engineers can really pack a punch in fractals.
I’m not a huge fan of grenades. Bombs however…
