I'm done !
HGH is seriously not necessary. It’s only useful for people that want to use Sigil of Earth, which IMO is really not all that special in the first place outside of PvE.
I find Sigil of Strength or Battle much more effective for stacking Might, and doesn’t require me to be tethered to drinking elixirs to support my damage output.
In sPvP, I’ll off-hand it with Force if I’m using the Tool Kit or Bomb Kit or Smoldering if going with the Flamethrower.

Thank you, really, you cheered me up!
Also because sometimes I try a build with might duration runes, enhanced performance and battle sigil with toolkit, rifle and Soldier’s Amulet.
Knowing that other people use Battle and Tool Kit cheers me up
because he doesn’t know it himself
tbh most of the problems with engineer could have just been solved by making kits change with your weapon (and actually use your choice of weapon)
Example would be:
the flamethrower not just being a flamethrower but your rifle altered to become the “heavy” flamethrower and say a “light” flamethrower for pistol with different skills
how would the bomb kit work? simple rifle becomes a rocket launcher (grenade launcher for grenade kit obv) and pistols become say a mine launcher (since we havent actually got many mines)
toolkit would be an awkward one but how about it just modding your weapons into some form of tool (like a slightly more spammy prybar on rifle)
as far as im aware engineer is sort of a “jack-of-all-trades” yet is completely overtaken in that respect by elementals who might aswell be “master-of-all-trades” in comparison
the issue with kits is the fact we need to waste a utility slot just to gain access to our equivilent of weapon swap and yet the kits dont even use our weapons as if needing to waste a slot just to get it wasnt bad enough
Darn, after coming back to the game after a couple months absence and deciding on an engineer this thread is a little nerve wracking. Does the engineer have any redeeming qualities left?
Engineer is still one of the most fun class to play, in my opinion.
It may not be a preferred class if you are a min/maxer, but if you want to dabble in a bit of everything it is perfect.
It is also ridiculously cool to have the ability to alternately hit someone with a wrench or prybar, burn them with a flamethrower, tranquilize them with a dart gun, lob grenades at them, drop bombs on them, kick them with rocket shoes, launch them with a ram, launch them with a mine, or drop turrets on them to do some of the same.
Of my elementalist, mesmer, necromancer, and thief, I keep coming back to the engineer and enjoy the play-style best.
To be honest, I have a hell of a lot more fun and easier time with engineer than with thief. I don’t know how people compare levels of performance. One is obviously your dps, but that’s… so… petty (and I don’t mean to insult anyone who tries to solely maximize their dps)
I found the opposite. I wvw my thief and engi, I have about a 3x easier time gaining ranks with my thief compared to my engi. Although grenade kit engi is a better offensive/defensive build for towers and such, my thief has a better time out in the open. But I still play both there, depending if I want to stand near/on walls and chuck grenades or go hunt zergs and short bow them down with the occasional d/d attack of opportunity.

Nothing much except that I got tired of this class being so tedious compared to anything else on my roster.
This, at least, is pretty inarguable. Engineer is easily the most tedious class.
Grenade spam = carpal tunnel invitational.
Bomb kit = sloppiest way to “melee” ever invented.
Flamethrower kit = suicide if anyone is running retaliation.
Turret build = largely immobile concept in a game built around mobility. The trait to deploy them is neat and handy but also greatly increases the tedium of the build.
And I’m not convinced that engineer abilities having random effects is really of any value to us. Thank goodness they restricted thrown-elixir-U to two things that stop projectiles, at least. I guess the idea was like a Chaos Mage — “oh no it’s an engineer! Who knows what crazy stuff he’ll do next!” But none of it’s THAT crazy. In a chaotic environment like WvW I’m pretty sure nobody notices or cares about what random effect we just threw because with 20+ players fighting there’s essentially random effects happening all the time anyway. All it does it harm our own ability to plan our attack.
Really I think the engineer is an unfocused class in general but that’s beside the point.
That most of our builds are tedious relative to how other classes play seems inarguable.
A game that’s 100% WvW

if we are less original it is because of the last five or six months of vehement forum ridicule every time someone suggests a build not made by Teldo or Maska.
(no offense meant to their builds, since they are kitten solid, but ill also point out that it is not teldo or maska ridiculing people, but rather their e-groupies who like cookies and cutters)
