Just watching the trailer again and I get a feeling hammer will be a hybrid weapon focusing on burning damage. Or possibly include explosions in its attacks.
I don’t think itll directly compete with rifle for the same type of damage but bring its own style instead.

it better have more than one cc. guardian and warrior hammers are cc machines, i expect something similar.
the engineer’s elite specialisation and pvp in guild halls are the only reasons why i would buy HoT, and if it turns out engineer becomes a healer with minions or something equally inane i just won’t buy it. there are few selling points if you don’t pve.

I think it could be a challenge to make the hammer meet expectations as a cool and appropriate (hammer-esque) melee weapon without making it too similar to the rifle. The rifle is already a short-range burst direct damage weapon with heavy CC, which is what hammers typically do (well, minus the burst damage maybe). What should we expect the hammer to do to be different? Maybe sustained damage at the cost of burst? More or less CC than the rifle? Mobility? Defense?

I kindof expect support from hammer. The drones and all.
Maybe rifle is getting remade into an actual ranged kit. Hence the removal of riflemod, and the 10% attackspeed trait.
Most of our kits just act as weapon sets for us and we have nice support at elixir gun and med-kit now. I’m hoping for a heavy dps weapon, it has a rocket attached for brutal impact and the thing we are missing in our new traits is damage modifiers (many disappeared). Tanking is also possible, but we got nice traits for it like bunker down or iron blooded.

well, considering rifle, p/s and p/p are all viable currently having hammer being OP to the point where you have to use it and the elite specialisation would suck. it can be great, because rifle and pistol are great- but I definitely don’t want it to be better. I don’t want to be forced to use the elite spec for any class. they should be alternatives not upgrades.
now, don’t go thinking i’m not pumped ive got three engineers and my favourite weapon in the game is warrior hammer. I’m pumped as hell, and engineer hammer is the only thing apart from guild halls i even care about in HoT. i expect the hammer to have a minimum of 2ccs and a leap, as both warrior and guardian hammer both have these but im open to anything with a bit of stunlock.

Hammer being OP doesnt have to take away from other weapons current OPness… i dont see that logic pal.
i want hammer melee that is just as meta as rifle for SPvP. Simple as that. I dont like rifle. I dont really like ranged. I love melee. But i still want to be strong.
They should make rifle more long range weapon and hammer pure melee. We will see

i’m predicting a condi cleaving hammer,
I’m predicting a hammer that would encourage power and ferocity. If not probably something more of a tanker. The armor it had on made it looked like a blacksmith so it could focus on toughness and condi too.

Hopefully, guess we’ll wait and see once they release some more information about the hammer. All we can guess from the minimal footage in the trailer is there may be possible “flying turrets”(Though that could just be a new utility skill).
But as I said before we’ll wait and see, and hopefully it’ll look good with the Scientific Hammer and/or Aetherized hammer skins! (As in the skill FX, ect.)

Smashing your opponents will heal them based on the direct damage you would normally deal.
On a serious note, the Engineer has no real gap to fill in terms of damage and weaponry so it’s hard to predict what the Hammer will do in here.
My guess is of course a powerweapon with access too single and some aoe damage perhaps a slight bit of utility and a different function for a heavy hammer type weapon in the form of mobility(rockets and all) Medium armor in melee is no fun when you dont have stealth or escapes that can get you in and out on a whim.
I don’t want hammer to be better than rifle, I just want them both to be usable to fulfill different niches or to better fit different situations.
We only have three weapons we can use (four after the update), we really don’t need to have one of them pushed to the point of obscurity.
Engi hammer will be nothing more than what the great sword is to Mesmer. It will spin in our hands emitting flame and electrical bursts.
Seriously, I am hoping for some nice stuns with hard hitting aoe dmg.

with you there. i’m almost totally ignoring this ‘challenging pve content’ nonsense. I want to see how these new specs perform in wvw and pvp predominantly, and if hammer performs the way we’re all hoping(IE a hybrid between guard and warrior hammer) then it’ll be one of the most fun things on any class. (i desire to knock people off cliffs with a hammer on an engie too!)
