Remember the time when professions got released one after another and they first stopped after Elementalist, Warrior, Ranger, Thief, Necromancer, Mesmer and Guardian?!
Guild Wars 2 should have been released at first only with those seven professions. The engineer profession got added subsequently. Noone expected another profession to be released because there seemed to be no more niche for another profession.
So, look at the engineers traits – lots of them seem to be copy/pasted from other professions, just made a bit weaker or harder to access. Everything seems not really well thought through, the profession surely would need some polishing.
And on top of that ArenaNet doesn’t really have found a niche for the engineer. If you read their philosophy for all the professions again the discription for the engineer seems to be a patchwork out of other classes, just weaker.
All in all the engineer seems to not fit in the game. But it is already released and can’t be taken back. So what can ArenaNet do to solve this problem?!
Here is their solution: ArenaNet decided to make this unwelcomed and low polpulated class so undesirable to play, by slowly nerfing it with every patch into oblivion, until finally noone ever logs onto their engineer, doesn’t even remember playing this profession or even notices that there has ever been some strange profession called an engineer.
At that time ArenaNet can delete the whole profession from the game without anyone caring at all. Problem solved – mission accomplished.
I do hope for balance for all professions in pve and pvp, and I know engineer has a lot of issues. I dont think engineers will get neglected in the longterm. The game would be less colorful without this fun profession. So ArenaNet has no reason to treat engineers second class. Lets cross fingers and hope for the best, after rain comes sunshine!
That’s what i was hoping for! Make some people smile a little with so many sad posts in so many threads going around in this forum.
EDIT: I wonder if anybody could come up with an even better conspiracy involving the engineer? Dont hesitate to write it down so we all know the truth!
Various fringe abilities such as drake’s breath, thief’s stolen item skills, environmental objects and their skills, came together into the darkness and grew into a sentient being. And thus the engineer was born. To walk amongst the others as though it were one of them.
Mesmer was already a profession that existed in GW1, so its reasonable to guess that they already had Mesmer designs early on, and saved it for the final announce so that they ended on something awesome and not silly. (It is, after all, one of the best-designed classes in GW2)
Nothing like engineer had existed, and it probably never should have.
