I thought engineer is a long range character
No the have said several times we are a mid range class. If try not to be we get nerfed. Know your place.
how to dps?
ranger: 2.
engineer: you first need near to him,and then click 2, ok,we catch him! we catch him! 3 and 5 quick!!yeah~you are great!……..
i think the rifle skill 3 and 4,their damage is not conform to the control and short range they need to work.

i think rifle engineer is a short range class.if you can’t immobizlize or pull somebody, rifle 3&5 can’t success. not like ranger longbow 2,these two skills damage are not steady very much, critical or not just once chance.
I’ve been having fun is sPvP by trying to see just how much control I can get out of engi.
20 in explosives for the III (bigger bomb blast) and IX (turrets knockback when they die)
10 in firearms for III cripple on immobilise
20 in tools for speedy kits and static discharge
that leaves you 20 pts to customise to your preferred playstyle.
I like it in inventions for moar turrets and the 20% damage reduction whenever you use rifle 4. which is also condition removal.
I take the healing turret for condition removal, knockback and water field.
the rifle turret because it has the shortest cd for both the utility and the toolbelt
the net turret for more immobilise.
bombkit for immobilise and kb as well as fields on the 2 and 4.
and supply crate.
Use a rifle for the 2 immobilise and 4 kb
Havent messed around with runes yet, but I might try condition duration from lyssa with something else. Needs a bit of tweaking but it has been a laugh.
Engineer has always been advertised as a mid range character. Often having both long and short range skills in their setup at the same time, required to dart in and out of melee. Kiting melee enemies but coming closer for special attacks like Blowtorch, Blunderbuss, Prybar, full hit Grenade Barrage – among others. Even with nades you often have to stay in the mid range to hit moving targets better – you have to be midrange to focus the damage on same enemies.
Don’t know where you got the idea that engineer would be max range nuker.
I would say 0 / 30 (20) / 0 / 10/ 30 Static Discharge, rifleturret+toolkit+X, burst engineer comes closest to that. You hang around the 900 range and jump in for glorious finish with Jump Shot.
Engineer is mid-range unless we use Grenades, at which point we become VERY long-range! (I would rather a range nerf than damage nerf though…)
And don’t compare with Ranger. Their damage is really bad!

ranger damage is good.
pvp engineer is not easy to use rifle 3 and 5. sometime they are normal damage?and sometime they are just miss.why i compare with Ranger, because i don’t want to compare with warrior…
I consider 600 years mid range. Rifle is 900 (untraited). The usual SD complement is also 900, so there is no reason to go close than that if range is what’s wanted. On easy mobs/bosses we can be in medium/melee range and use Blunderbuss and our jump shot (which hits like a truck if we add both jump and landing).
The rifle also hits pretty hard and fast compared, for example, with a Greatsword mesmer who takes 1.5 seconds to do the same auto attack damage.
P.S. No immobilize? Rifle #2 says hello. Trait it and it’s also a cripple. You can pull with the Toolbox too. If you play with Rifle/SD you can have two Cripples, one immobilize and two knockbacks.

Rifle is 1000, pistol is 900. That is, of course, referring to the auto-attack only since the other skills can have different ranges.
When I choose engineer, I think he is a long range character.
And now i found that i was wrong.
He does not hold a rifle, but the shotgun…………. lol
Look at warrior and ranger, and look at you, engineer!
What‘s in your hand?Rifle? No!That is a shotgun! All the hight damage skills need use in a short distance!
So very true.
The Warrior rifle is so distant and impersonal, always trying to shut people out, afraid of getting close to someone. But the Engineer rifle wants to get nice and close, cozy up to it’s fire, and make sweet sweet death to people all night long.
