It’s speculation based upon ANets past history of eliminating Engi’s good builds. For all we know ANet actually considers HGH balanced.

There is a strong thread in the SPvP forum to that effect: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/It-s-time-to-nerf-Engineers

It doesn’t help that a couple of our top Engs have been joining in saying that HGH is OP. Ostricheggs in particular has made repeated posts in that thread saying his own HGH is OP.

Speculation is that it’s Might stacking that needs nerfing, rather than HGH specifically.

Which concerns me the most about this is that the Eng class might end up balanced for the top 10 or 20 players only. It’s bad enough for the 99.x% of Eng players already, without our play experience being penalised even further because a few talented freaks (nice guys, they just have a freakishly high level of skill) can get this class to be competitive at the highest echelons of SPvP.

Hopefully they don’t nerf HGH. While I still play my engi sometimes, my guardian has become my main. If they nerf HGH I won’t have any reason to login to my engi at all.

Balance has to happen, which is fine. The issue is that when they nerf Engis they don’t really add anything in to compensate. Nerfing HGH and then adding in more useless turret buffs definitely won’t work.

I don’t believe a Engi should be able to take on more than 1 person at any given moment.

Nor does an Engi lose his edge when he doesn’t have might. Yeah it’s high damage but I think you can manage a better fight than using steroids.

Its funny how Anet has been so quick to eliminate hard found engineer builds, yet so slow in doing to same to some of the seriously overpowered classes in the game (eles, mesmers).

I mean the only conclusion I can draw from this is that engineers (and warriors and rangers) arent meant to be in the higher tiers of professions while eles and mesmers are.

I’ve been following this issue for a while now and it seems like it’s just the engineer community that has perpetuated this idea, probably out of boredom.

It’s sad, but there was one QQ thread and it just got swarmed with engineers. Most seemed like familiar posters from this forum with the exception of a few from other classes. Half of the people from other classes said they have no problem dealing with engineer HgH, the other half (of which there weren’t many) said we need to get nerfed before we become as useful as an ele. Half of the engineers on the thread wanted HgH nerfed and the other half were dead set on no more nerfs.

I’ve tried to figure out why this community is so intent on nerf mongering before every patch. Is it because HgH is perhaps boring for them? Is that why they want to see it nerfed? Or does the community want fuel for the “nerf-resentment” they have for the devs. It’s probably the latter, as people find conflict engaging and amusing, they want more nerfs as an oportunity to bash the devs again.

As to why top players insist on HgH getting nerfed, I think it has to do with the engineer being a very niche and high difficulty class. If I had to make a guess it would be that top engies view HgH as “too good” because being an engineer has never before been FotM, nor has it ever been easy. Having a well rounded build with few weaknesses (which HgH has) may seem too good for an engineer because there have been very few builds like that before, and they’ve all been nerfed.

If you ask a mesmer/elementalist/thief if they think their class (or build) is overpowered, they’ll happily inform you about the drawbacks to those builds, or the skill required to pull them off. Apparently, if you ask a top HgH engineer, they’ll probably tell you that yes, the build is overpowered because it can’t be easily countered like every other engi build. This speaks of a weak class, not an overpowered build.

Ask good mesmers if they think HgH is overpowered, I doubt they’ve even bothered looking it up.

Well the reason why the population who wants to nerf might stacking is because it’s a chore to stack it up, and HGH should just give us the power of a giant stack of might, without the 5 minutes of prep beforehand, or just make our skills scale better so we aren’t bottlenecked into taking the exact same 30 pt no matter what build we want to go.

Also, it’s not a BAD thing there is BALANCE talk about A build, it’s healthy to actually DISCUSS a build, if the HGH truely is Overpowered, that will only be found out by testing and discussing it in such forum! Even if we only have one awesome build in tPvP, and it’s OP, it should be nerfed into an balanaced state where it will still be playable in high tier tPvP

The problem is that only engineers are balanced every patch. Not ele, not mesmer, not ranger not thiefs (ok thiefs got a nerf last time)

What all engineers like me fear is not the balance, I guess we fear that they remove it like 100nades or other builds.

But we do not have to start a discussion. I am not good enough to discuss with you because I know that I have not the necessary overview about all classes to judge the Engineer correctly.

But what I know is that playing an engineer with a complete different build means being a free kill. And I do not want to start an tPvP game and my team has to suffer because of my class choice because no build left for us.

The most player guess that ele > mesmer, guard> engineer, ranger, necro, thief >> warrior. And the distance between tier 2 and 3 is not that big. If they remove HGH from our builds we should ask for engineer and warrior only tourney because without HGH we will be much weaker.

That’s a very large and unsubstantiated leap to the conclusion. General chit-chat aside, most posts here seem to be attempts to foster common understanding between the Devs and the players, not increase division between the two groups.

As to why top players insist on HgH getting nerfed, I think it has to do with the engineer being a very niche and high difficulty class. Isn’t it pretty simple in the end?

IF they consider HGH too strong, or might stacking in general… If this engineer build is deemed too powerfull…

Than yes: it should get toned down somewhat.

But that isn’t the real issue. Toning down is ok if a build truly is too strong.

The real issue is: will they bring the other engineer builds up to the level they figure HGH condi burst should be at?
That’s what makes or breaks balancing: not that one build is rightfully toned down, but that the other builds are NOT rightfully toned up…

All speculation. Don’t get upset yet. The only reason you’ve heard this is because it’s a really good build for us, so all the pessimists expect it to get nerfed into the ground. Engis have finally been given respect in the PvP world and players are noticing that we can actually kill things. So the doom-sayers are expecting Anet to say “we can’t have that.”

Also, there’s a speculated Might nerf across the board, which will affect HGH. Not a direct-HGH, Engi-focused nerf, but it’ll affect us nonetheless.

If It Happens.

The thing with the last few patches is they have made a point of nerfing popular builds, and did minor tweaks to unused abilities that still left those abilities subpar. If HGH gets nerfed, where do Engis go next? And then after the following May patch that nerfs that build, where do they go?

I posted about a month ago how I felt regarding this exact issue. It seems that rather than buffing (not just minor tweaks) unused or underpowered skills/utilities/traits, Anet instead prefers to nerf the popular ones. Certain builds may be strong, OP in fact, but that’s only when compared to other builds out there. If pets were super incredible then rangers wouldn’t be complaining about problem x, because they wouldn’t be comparatively underpowered.

Let me be more clear: by take on I mean have a chance to beat. As in kill. One bunker cannot hope to kill another bunker, and let’s face it, the only 2v1 that a bunker can survive forever is against two other low damage classes. The only way that a bunker can actually beat two other people is if they’re both glass cannon. But if they’re both glass cannon, they are much more likely to eat the guardian than vice versa.

All assuming equal skill level of course.

And also, HGH is not a bunker.

The issue with HGH is it’s might stacking. Most builds have to sacrifice power or condition damage and if you don’t then you sacrifice toughness/vitality. So there is a give. With HGH you can add 800 more power/condition damage easily if spec’d right which allows you to lower your cond/power and add more tough/vit. You are balanced.

The second issue that has been posted is that Engineers have the most access to weapon skills that benefit from power and condition. We have tons of burn options, we have tons of bleeding. You add in lots of power for burst + DoT then you are a bit too powerful.

However, that being said, running the build takes skill and concentration. I fooled around with it yesterday and I have to constantly run my tool belt skills and potions to keep might stacked. So in order to nuke HGH you would have to change boon duration sigils and might duration. If you did that for all classes then HGH would take a hit.

I consistently take on necros and thieves or rangers and eles 2v1 at my bunker and succeed. They are not low dmg classes. 3v1 is hard for anyone. 2 people need to seriously kitten with my cooldowns to take me out before my call for assist is answered to actually take me out. Even if they get me, my team has arrived, and I will repawn to reposition quickly.

I dunno, I don’t see the problem.

HGH is “OP” because it can survive like a bunker WHILE killing people. This is what OstrichEggs is talking about.

Doing skill balancing based on just few top players is bad, because different professions have different skill cap. After spending considerable time playing all 8 professions I can tell that engineer has the highest skill cap.

Engineers lack powerful and easy-to-play builds
For comparison elementalist have the infamous dual dagger build 10 air, 30 water, 30 arcana. It is pretty much faceroll in any area of the game from pve to WvWvW. Thieves have the dual dagger build. Guardian’s the altruistic healing build and so on. All these builds are very common and alone more common than the total number of engineers.

I really hope Anet doesn’t nerf the HGH build by reducing engineer overall damage. E.g. reducing the effectiveness of the grenade kit would be the dumbest thing to do. The smartest thing to do would be to tone down the boon duration runes. Now mixing 2 superior runes of the monk, 2 sup. runes of the water, and 2 major runes of monk, you get 40% boon duration, mix that with e.g. 30 in arcana for elementalist (+30 % boon duration), you get amazing 70% increase in boon duration = perma boons. Nerfing the boon duration runes would actually hurt all professions. ANother thing which Anet might consider is limiting the number of might stacks to 10-15. 15 would still be powerful, but not that overpowered.

Engineers are versatile and good engineers can accomplish of a lot of things in small amount of time, but that requires a lot of skill and key presses. Calling an engineer overpowered doesn’t make sense. If engineer would be so overpowered we would see much more engineers in the game. Still engineer is the least popular profession. I rarely ever see another engineer commander in WvWvW besides myself. In fact some Desolation top players say that engineer is impossible to play effectively as a commander as it requires too much micro management to stay alive and thus most good commanders use tanky builds, which more rely on passive effects.

What engineers need is some easy way to do burst and more dps. These are needed things to beginner and average players. Not everybody is a pro and if Guild Wars 2 wants to remain popular it should cater casual gaming and offer more versatility. This would be most easily achieved by giving a slight buff to all engineer attack #1 attack skills (pistol #1, rifle #1, bombkit #1, grenade kit #1) etc. This would have zero effect on the HGH build, since no decent HGH engineer uses pistol #1 anycase or uses it once in a blue moon.

I would love for the nerf to come in the form of limiting Might stacks to 15.
I rarely play with more than 15 Stacks and am usually sitting around 10 because I don’t use Enhanced Performance.
I don’t use Grenade Kit at all, HGH isn’t just the tPvP NadeKit version.
In WvW I use TK as its is much better suited to staying alive.
In PvE you can use FT with HGH and Juggernaught to kite large groups of mobs forever.

IMO there is no aspect of the Engineer that is OP, meaning TOO powerful to be countered by equal skill and gameplay. It doesn’t just take a HGH Engineer to take another out, in fact that battle would probally go on forever and would be the most perfectly matched thing GW2 has every created.

I’m guessing they will limit the might stacks or change the condi damage boost might gives. Still a nerf to the build but maybe not making HGH obsolete. Of course they have mentioned boon hate in general before so changes to the number of boons could possibly effect how might stacking works. Hard to say at this point. I just think some nerf will come to it since every popular build for the engi gets nerfed at some point.

This is why games should NEVER be balanced around PvP.

This concept isn’t as bad as it might seem. Balancing a game around PvP shouldn’t be that difficult or problematic so long as PvE at higher levels resembled a PvP environment (aggressive enemies with short attack intervals, evasion skills, control skills, gap-closers and skill chains in the proper amounts).

As it is now, there is often either none of this (most dungeons) or too much of this (krait and dredge—except dredge are just stupid mostly because of the sheer numbers in which they appear and high hp due to Protection EVERYWHERE). New Orr is actually not bad in this manner when it comes to regular enemies (plenty of movement, range swapping and aggressiveness), but most veterans and champions encounters remain entirely brain-dead (“Oh, hey guys! Good idea! Let’s take a regular enemy, extend its health bar into low-earth orbit and call it a Champion!”).

If there were more enemies like Niflhel’s Svanir and Chieftain Utahein as PvE veterans and champions in mid to high-level areas, the whole prospect of balancing around PvP principles wouldn’t be so difficult or contrived as it is now.

Do you REALLY need 25 stacks of might to kill a player? No. How about in PvE? Well, in PvE, a lot of target enemies have such stupidly high HP pools that maximum damage is really the only way to go. Therefore, 25 stacks of might in PvE is either very much appreciated or required in order to cut down on boredom as much as possible. Is there a discrepancy? Then there’s a problem. However, the REAL problem is that is STILL ASTOUNDS ME how there exists this huge gap in required skill/profession mastery between PvE and PvP encounters, and yet ANet still gets their panties in a knot over negotiating balance between the two formats. Honestly, slashing HP pools across the board for champion, veteran and elite enemies in PvE would really shed a lot of light on the true state of “balance” in GW2.

IMO, its only overpowered in wvw where conditions hit for redundant numbers. I find it to be highly lackluster in spvp/tpvp. yo mang, I never said I could bunker anything. Actually just the opposite. For me, standing on point against a player of any class is a kittening nightmare. It makes any fight 3x harder for an engi, especially trying to hold a point already half-way neut and not being able to pop elixir S.

Hell, most of the time I just let the point go neut so I can kill the kitten then just recap it. It’s better to let it go neut than to lose it.

kitten is pretty OP though. Not for the survivability but for the raw killing power. A terrible engi can maybe down a couple dudes if he lands a few lucky nades. A GOOD engi will survive long enough for the other team to blow condi clears and wipe them altogether.

Surviving is not our specialty.

well then, you are full of kitten because there is nothing OP about a condi burst build, and I am taking infractions on my account for this kitten.

you kittens aint worth it anymore.

surviving is my specialty.

Not sure why you guys are complaining. I do pretty well killing people without HgH.
I don’t believe a Engi should be able to take on more than 1 person at any given moment.

Nor does an Engi lose his edge when he doesn’t have might. Yeah it’s high damage but I think you can manage a better fight than using steroids.

Why shouldn’t an Engi be able to take on more than one person at once? Thieves, Eles, Guardians and mesmers can….

I think this is important. Condi nades HGH is a good build for tournaments, but nothing spectacular for PvE, WvW, or hotjoins. Even in tournaments, you need a great team to make HGH work (it’s a fairly difficult build to play in itself, but it needs great team support). Count up all the difficulties about it and the 10-20 number you mention is probably pretty accurate.

I disagree with HGH being difficult. Well it can be difficult in PVE, but in any form of PVP you should do fine.

Wait, what? Can you explain this to me?

Two dodges, one stun break, lots of damage. HGH in a nutshell.

Every fight is a complex set of reactions. It’s a SOLELY reactionary class. You don’t determine the course of a fight, the other player(s) do. To imply that it’s easier in PvP is kinda insane.

that depends on the level of your opponents.
I think, for most ‘normal’ pvp, that HGH condi burst just goes full out on the opponent and react a bit to the most special things that opponent does. But in general I think most HGH condi engineers just ‘unleash’ and wreck the other…

I am not saying you’re exagerating, but I do think you speak mostly of highly skilled opponents and top level fights.

The other engineers won’t have 25 stacks all the time, they won’t have timed everything right… but they will still do a ton of damage to their opponent and have decent survivability while doing their ‘rotations’.

This doesn’t make HGH ‘easy’ but I really believe it’s so strong it can remain effective at lower skill levels too.

I talked to Hammon in game who is a dev and he said HGH is getting nerfed. Gadgets are not being worked on at the moment and basically nothing else lol.

You have, easily, the worst “great player” to “terrible and unhelpful forum poster” ratio I’ve ever seen.

If it does get nerfed there’d be no one else to blame but the engineer community. I’ve been asking guildies throughout this month (in a guild of about ~150) and no one thinks engineers are overpowered. Most (nearly all) haven’t even heard of HgH. There’s actually only three engineers in our guild (myself included) and we all just run whatever we feel like playing around with. No cookie cutter builds.
