Hi guys,

first of all I really like my ingi but I have a little problem with my ingi =(
In a 1vs1 fight against a mesmer I always go down.
I nearly tried every built but I can’t get the mesmer down.

Someone has a built for me which is only strong against mesmers?

condition removal + aoe. Mesmers kills you with illusions and because you attacked while under confusion.

Experience. After a while you will learn to spot the real mesmer. Remember illusions can only attack or walk TOWARDS YOU, they cant, move in any other direction, dodge, use attacks 2,3,4,5 or cast spells. Their downed skill lets them teleport randomlyin a short range, just wait 2 sec if they do that

Tag the Mesmer and now you know which one is real.

I had the same problems with a condi build. I switched to might HGH build. Mesmer still is not easy but I win more often as before.

First I crtl+T to highlight the real person.
I save some elixier for removing conditions, because some mesmer give m many stacks of conditions.
If I have 10+ stacks of might, I hit for 800+ and put a lot of pressure on the mesmer.
If the mesmer is going to stealth or creating lots of illsuions I switch to
grenades, slow and blind him and try to outdamage the mesmer and the his “Friends”

My problem is not that i cant discover the real mesmer.
The Problem is more to get him in target and tag him is useless because after cloning the mark is gone.

So best built would be aoe built, because you can destroy clones too?
I always tried elixir(with cleanig forumla) condition-built with p/p.
So with aoe you mean nade-built?

Depend what kind of mesmer you fight.

Glamour mesmer, shatter mesmer, phantasm mesmer, immortal mesmer.

They are all tricky to fight.

Shatter mesmer : Watch for the leaping clone. Once they cast it, it means they are comboing you.

Glamour : They usually have one big combo to confuse you. They have a confusion AoE, try to dodge it. If it land, dont attack for the duration, or cleans but it’s going to hurt. Unload on them after that.

Immortal : They are a tanky build. Some have descent damage also. They are really really hard to pin down. I hate those kind of mesmer.

Phantasm Mesmer : They need pistol clone and berserk clone to do their damage. They will daze, shatter then send the berserk. This combo hit really hard. Try to dodge it, then get in close cmbat.

Those are fast tips, but I hate fighting mesmer. They are my worse enemy when playing my engi. All my build revolve around getting medium/close range, and it’s not easy task vs a mesmer. They have blurry frenzy, distortion, staff blink, clone popping, invis. All thos thing make it really hard to follow them.

I find the typical 30/10/0/30/0 hgh condi burst build to be very effective vs the typical shatter mesmers in tpvp, if you can land your whole condi burst on them it’s pretty much already won :p

I find the harder part being the land portion.

Those mesmer are so slipery!

I run 0/20/20/30/0 with full condition damage and have not lost to a mesmer in WvW 1v1 to this day, haven’t lost to any class 1v1 honestly[edit: to clarify i havent lost when using this build]. Confusion is a great way to control them and with static shot you can pretty effectively tell who the real mesmer is by how much their health goes down. My suggestion is to play a mesmer to understand what they’re doing and the abilities. 409 and running elixirs/toolkit will basically give you what you need to react to any situation. I struggled fighting a number of classes until I played them which helped immensely.

Yap heres a good build for mesmers.
30/0/0/30/10.
Typically gren traits up the power tree. Flame on crit etc.

You want to use something like rabid amulet for the condition and toughness. By going up alcemy you get life.

If your facing a shatter mesmer, you want to elixir s if he stuns you with gun and goes in for the shatter. Not before. If hes a phanthasm mesmer, you want to dodge the greatsword spinning clone, its where alot of his damage comes from. THen hit it w grens, then focus the real mesmer.

If vs shatter mesmer, after the initial stun break, hes on a 26 second cd b4 he can stun you again, but only 11 seconds before he can shatter again, you want to look for a clone that speed runs to you, soon as you see you see a super fast clone coming at you, dodge TOWARDS the mesmer, this triggers the shatters and they wont hurt you.

Mesmers have like NO condition removal, so using pistol/grens is good vs them, you can wear em down pretty solidly.

You do need to be fairly accurate with your gren toss’s. And if your using p/s you can use block for 1 more shatter dodge. Or even better p/p and the #5 when hes going ot shatter (if you see three cloens up its a good bet). By putting that down round yourself as he goes for the shatte r they get immobilized and blow up before hitting you.

This class match up actually favors the engy-ONCE you get enough experience. I win over 90% of my 1vs1 with mesmers. Alot of that has to do w knowning the class and getting crucial dodges.

I am assuming you are talking about WvW where confusion is ridiculous, in sPvP Mesmers don’t seem to have quite the same ombf.
I wouldn’t recommend running a build specific to killing Mesmers.
Alot of Mesmers are like Thieves and will run when they think they are gonna go down.

The best strategy I have found with Mesmers is the same one I use for Thiefs, which is to draw them in with pokes and to get them to use their burst, either block/stunbreak/x2Dodge roll or w/e and then they will be highly vulnerable and you can attempt to down them, but once again Thief/Ele/Mesmer have some very helpful and easy to use escapes that can also cover alot of ground quickly, so expect them to run away.

@Lupanic The Illusions will run up to you, and when at melee range, they will explode, often, if you dodge backwards when they run up to you, you will do it faster then they explode, and they will then just follow you and explode at the new place, if you jump into them on the otherhand, they will all blow up!

But I’m gonna make a voice commentary about general tips to deal with a mesmer, and Osicat probaly gonna help me out with it when I get there! will get much more into detail there

Well if mesmer use shatter, all ilusion run close to you and simply explode witch did that damage

As an all around i use a 10/30/0/30/0 with a pistol/shield combo. Static shield can be a godsend if you can hit all their clones/illusions rushing for you. If lucky you can force them to detonate around second daze (and sometimes you can hit that pesky real mesmer too. I got enough retaliation upkeep to punish the mesmer almost entire match (unless they are smart and have boon removal). Than between conditions, you cam tend to punish them due to most mesmers total lack of condition removal. Oh, and pistol/any engineers, don’t underestimate the power of static shot. That skill is a bounce, and cam really lay on pain with the blind (can help screw up their combo) and add confusion. Since many (but not all) mesmers have evasive clone (create clone on dodge) and tend to spam skills you can punish them with confusion and retaliation.

Pardon the somewhat wall of text, i hope this helps you a little in fights versus’s a mesmer.

Edit: totally slipped my mind, but if you go route of pistol/shield you can utilize combo fields heavily to your advantage.
Healing turrent : its f2 skill, you can use it than use shield #4 to detonate magnetic inversion under the water field for a burst heal
Smoke grenade: with magnetic inversion, cam stealth you
Frozen grenade: that nifty frost aura. And with added 10% dmg reduction ontop of having chill you can punish those skill spammy mesmers.
Poison grenade: area weakness with magnetic inversion. Cause then to have reduced endurance regen, and 50% chance to miss attacks.

Sorry again for wall of text: but dont forget to utilize your combo fields, they can help sway the fight in your favor.

If you dodge towards, you will trigger the shatter while your dodge roll is still up. meaning the clones will explode while ur still dodging, and no damage to oyu will occur.

This, basically. The biggest part is learning to spot the “real” Mesmer. Once you have them, they are squishy. Be mindful of shatters, and use condition removals.

Do you have a Mesmer alt? You might think about rolling one and trying out some of the builds that you have the hardest time with. Effective counters and knowing when to use them are key, and the best way to learn that is to know the class you are fighting, what they are capable of, what their abilities look like, etc.

The 100 ’Nades build will 1-shot any Mesmer (and pretty much everything else, for that matter) but it is difficult to master. Also, the beefed-up grenades will destroy illusions and phantasms so fast that they are practically useless.

I managed to own the mesmer in 1vs1 with 30/0/0/30/10
nades worked perfect against those illusions XD

Be careful about just dropping a bunch of area damage on mesmer illusions. Some builds trait for all illusions to have retaliation, so if you don’t know they have that boon and you drop a bunch of grenades on 3 illusions, you probably just downed yourself.
