Is Bomb Kit viable in PvP and WvW?
Yes. They work. Poke around (which you should have done before you made a new thread) there are a very large amount of recent threads on this particular subject. As well, their is a stickied thread discussing builds. You should find several builds discussing this.
In spvp yes, in WvW it could work if you are in a small fight but melee in general (bombs are basically melee come on) usually doesn’t last long in a zerg fest. That being said smoke bomb could buy you some time to gtfo after diving into the enemy.

I totally agree, in WvW, you can get some good combo fields and really benefit your team with both the elixer gun and the bomb kits. Make use of the rocket boots as a stun breaker as well as a great gtfo tool

Really not a fan of the delay or the pure melee nature.
but yest, bombs are viable in both spvp and wvw.
Very much in spvp due to point hold/capture.
Even in wvw though. Several combo field options, as well as blast finisher.
Bombs scale well for what they are. (not as OP as grenades) but quite appropriate.
bomb1: 1.19 power scaling. .5s cast.
b2: .19 power scaling (terrible) but fire field and burn.
b3: .476 power scaling. 5 stacks of confuse. (that is alot)
b4: smoke field. aoe invis on blast. blind on projectile swap. duration could be longer. :/ 5-6s smoke field would be better considering the lack of damage.
b5: glue bomb. melee version of glue shot. basically not as good as glue shot. only 5s shorter cd. same size, same duration. melee.. could use a small buff considering..
big ol bomb: 1.6 power scaling. knockback, blast. 3-4s delay.
All in all. Less raw damage then grenades(b1 is more damage then grenades without grenadier). more utility though, and 2 combo fields. Both of which are arguable better then poison field.
The bomb kit in WvW is great for 5vs5s and capping supply camps.
It’s also really great that you can equip it while using elixir S. It’s great for when your zerg is pushing and you want to go in first to immobilze, burn and confuse the hell out of them before they can run away
And as said, its great in sPvP for point capping.
I think elixer gun does Ok with a pistol condition build Zorgor, Switching too it doesn’t mess up bleed stacking.

I’ve made a lot of popular Engi builds in the past I swear
I made a support/heal/bunker engi that uses the bomb kit and elixir gun and so far it’s kicking kitten It’s just crazy what I can take plus the amount of utility I have for area control and enemy control then on top of that all the healing I can put out for a group. I don’t know about for a more damage oriented class tho, but really it seems to me like both the gun and bomb kit are designed with the intention of being more support than anything else anyways.
I feel the bomb kit needs to be a little bit more pronounced in its uses. When you really have to wonder what the heck the kit is for, maybe it needs a change. Sure, kiting a group of stupid mobs is the obvious use, but I can’t help but feel that grenades, flamethrower, toolkit and bombkit are all a bit much when they can all be used as the close-range option. Maybe if the bombs were more about the fields and affects it would see some more obvious use.
What I mean is that maybe the smoke and fire bomb fields could last longer as was stated above. Glue bomb seems pretty redundant. Glue gun is better, and I end up using toolkit nails for AoE cripple anyway with the bonus of some bleed. Maybe glue bomb just needs to be something else. I’m thinking some kind of acid pool bomb that causes vulnerability and a poison field.
Bomb kit could be great as a “field” creation kit for support in my opinion to make it more interesting. With healing bombs, it’s even more-so. I just feel it’s pretty stupid to have 4 different kits that do almost the same thing for melee, just in slightly different ways. At the end of the day, most people are only going to end up using one close-range kit when there are so many other skills that don’t overlap eachother.
I agree with Chickenshoes. I always use the bomb kit for a bit of extra dmg since it’s really the only decent source with my build, but more so for the knock back and field creation since they can be so powerful, the blind is nice too… The glue bomb does seem a it week too. It’s nice to help setup combos for other people or for yourself since that one second root plus snare is enough time to kite people or hold them on your big bomb to ensure the knock back. But I really like the idea of it being super useful for field generation as well and although it can make a ton of them, they really don’t last long enough for much use to be made of ‘em I think. Either way, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it’s weak (at least in my setup) but it is certainly a bit underwhelming.
Spvp node control as in the engineer bunker build, bomb kit is second to none there.
Wvw, it’s great for kiting, cutting off retreats, fights on supply camps. It’s less damage oriented than a grenadier traited grenade kit (but better than untraited grenades) and more kiting/utility oriented.
To add onto PotatoOverdose’s excellent guidance on the uses of bomb kit in the various PvP settings, don’t forget the ability to combo field with all the finishers going on in WvW. Blinds being flung everywhere, stealth being repeatedly stacked for those precious moments smoke bomb is up. In a large group setting smoke bomb can an incredible advantage. And if played right you can use your bomb conditions to lay down some pain in sPvP. That pesky thief bursting at you? Drop a concussion bomb and laugh at his health drops while you dodge away.
Bomb kit’s uses are only limited to the imagination of the engineer as are many of the other kits available to us.
