Other classes have access to signets that regen, Reduce damage,

Increase speed, Summon pets, Improve crit chance, Cure conditions,

Improve power/precision, And various other things. So is the engineer

at a Disadvantage because they have no access to signets?

Just some thing that I thought of while running around on my engineer.

Signets trade a passive for a weaker activation effect so we really don’t lose much. Sure, it kinda sucks to not be able to make a passive effect build but we aren’t losing out on effectiveness. Also signets would be broken with our tool belt, does the tool belt skill also provide a passive? Or will the tool belt allow us to “use” the signet without losing its passive? Both defeat the point of a signet.

Signets are magic and engineers dont use magic.
Some kind of passive effect would be nice though, maybe each kit could grant a passive effect or something but thats just wishing.

I don’t know.

But i just thought up something that may be good.
What if gadgets and turrets had passive effects added to them?
For example, just having ultility goggles in your skillbar would passively increase your crit chance by 5% or having a thumper turret would passively increase toughness.

Dante: Well I think not having some thing like regen is missing out on effectiveness. Makes a big difference on my ranger.

CriSPeH: You sure Signets are magic? Warriors don’t seem to use magic either none of there other utility skills are magic based.

@CriSPeH
If anything signets are the exact opposite. To me a signet is like a magically imbued talisman than anybody can use, regardless if they can use magic or not. That is why they give you passive buffs, imagine a ring or amulet with an active skill, and you have signets.

Something along the lines of, Signets are magic and Engineers are against magic.

I liked the idea of having some of the gadgets giving passive effects. In terms a signet only with a different name… Say Rocket Boots give passive 10% movement speed and keep the long recharge activated effect, doesnt sound wrong at all imo.

Who says engineers don’t use magic?

They appear to use a lot of magic material to make the likes of elixirs, and for the shield.

Plus, they surely have a bag of holding to be able to store so many bombs/grenades/ammo.

What are you on about?

I looked on the wiki and it says only this

“The engineer is the only profession that does not have any signets.”

Nothing about magic. You made that up.

Alchemy isnt magic persay. Its “Psuedo” magic at best. And the shield uses Science to power its abilties. so I wouldnt call it magic either.

I wouldnt say engineers dont have access to magic, just that they dont use it.

Why couldn’t a guardian and a warrior be equipped with bomb kit and elixir kit?

Why shall every class be given what the other classes have and as a result become all the same?

That’s not really farr Joykafka, since signets are not exclusive to one class, but rather 7/8 of them.

I don’t find it weird that engineers lack shouts, since only 3/8 professions have shouts, but I do find it weird that 7/8 have access to signets. It makes the 1/8 the exception.

So, saying that a case where 1/8 has access to bombs therefore that means that others should have it, isn’t a fair point.

Saying that 7/8 has access to signets, and therefore one more should have it, is pretty fair.

Though, I will concede that engineers are weird in this respect.

7/8 professions are able to use ‘on swap’ sigils, but not engineers.
So, maybe the devs like arbitrarily stopping the engineer from using certain things.

And on the topic of magic, nowhere does it say engineers don’t use magic. They may not have magical powers, but neither does a warrior. And he uses signets.

Its completely illogical to not believe in and not use magic in a world where it so obviously exists.

I like the uniqueness and exception that only engineers have the privilege to. Don’t exchange our rare ability with other common abilities.

You don’t have to.

I’ve suggested and others have too, to give gadgets the passive component that signets have either normally, or by a trait.

The trait system accomplishes that right now. Speedy kits, kit refinement, vigor with speedy kits, regen with kit equip, etc.

Of course I know how signets work.

The point is right now many of our talents do what you suggested – provide a passive benefit for equipping a particular utility skill (in our case usually kits). Juggernaught provies 200 toughness + might stacks for FT. Speedy kits provides swiftness on all kits. The 10 point alch talent when combined provides swiftness + vigor on all kits. There’s a talent that gives regen on all kits IIRC.

We already get two skills per gadget. I don’t think we also need to put passive bonuses on top of that. The current system works fine.

Is it odd engis don’t have signets? Yes, it’s odd. But that’s just life. We don’t have signets from a design point of view because we have both kits and turrets. Those don’t leave any utility slots left for signets.

But that’s just saying that something is X because it is Y.

Signets are specific things. Passive effect is on, and later turned off when the active is used and on cooldown.

You can’t say that you have signets already because they provide a passive. Gaining vigor+swiftness has about as much to do with signets, as hip shot. Nothing at all.

I wouldn’t just make something up.
But you are right I can’t find where I read this anymore on the wiki.
I do remember reading it somewhere, but that was also when the game was in beta.
Like I said I was trying to figure out why the hell everyone else had signets and we didn’t and that was the answer I found.

I do agree that our class needs something in place of Signets.
I still think that kits should give a passive ability when you have slotted and when you equikittent instead of the utility skill turning in to a “drop kit”or"swap" button (which we already have with the weapon swap keybind), the utility skill should turn into a new skill that activates the passive.

Something like.
FT = passive that increases +condition per tick.
-gain one tick for every enemy killed up to 5 ticks.
-activate utility skill and burn 5 ticks to gain stability.

Imo somthing like that will make up for not having Signets AND for Sigils not working on kits.

I think gadgets acting like signets would be the best fit because gadgets aren’t all that powerful, not kit powerful anyway, and have long cooldowns so acting like a signet would be easy.

I always viewed out elixirs like shouts, and gadgets like signets.

The gadgets just need a bit of love though, since they are somewhat disadvantages compared with kits.

You can get the same utility ability + 4 more from a kit over a gadget. Kits get better trait support as well.

I started out as a Ranger who ran all signets, and switched to an engineer. Honestly, I can’t say whether we are put at a disadvantage because we lack them, but I will say this:

A) Signets are boring. VERY boring. I can’t imagine playing engineer, who lacks weapon swap, with a bar full of signets. My eyes would bleed
B) My level 80 dual pistol engie kitten both warriors and rangers, 2 of the 3 primary signet classes, in both sPvP and WvW. I don’t miss the signets at all
C) I think elixirs > signets. Personal Opinion though

I would argue that engineers are not at a disadvantage since I don’t find signets to be that big of a deal. If they were a big deal, then every class would be running them since they would be superior. Of course they don’t… you get a couple of classes that run signets, and many times not because it is actually good for anything.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.
