Guild Wars 2

Hey guys so i’ve had Guild Wars 2 since December but i still haven’t mained a character. I’ve played every class pretty well except the mesmer, thief, and guardian, but out of all of them i seem to really like the engineer. How do you guys feel about the engineer? I currently have a level 38 sylvari engineer and im wondering if i should stick to him because i’m pretty tired of restarting. So please comment with your opinions thanks!

It’s definitely the most fun for me. I have not been able to get an alt above level 10 before I’m dying to come back to my Engineer.

I’m sure if you asked all 8 profession forums what the best profession was you’d get at least 5 different answers. Asking what “the best” profession is is not a meaningful question. Are you looking for a specific area of the game? A specific play style?

It sounds like you already answered your question when you say you really like the Engineer. Play it.

Well if you like the engie better than other classes then main it.

Its hard to define best but in guild wars you should not be looking to play the strongest class because buffs and nerfs come monthly; what was viable in march may not be in april and class tiers are constantly changing

Currently they are from a tourney perspective in my opinion.

But like penguin said, balance changes happen with zero warning, so who knows about next month? Since the start of the game we went from middle of the road then to bottom of the barrel and now we’re at top with HgH.

A lot of the buffs are irreversible though. It’s not like they’re gonna remove sigils on kits :P

I like the engineer because we can adapt very well and I never feel useless or pinched into a single role (like being always ranged or being a supporter oder beeing DD only and so on).

The con is: it can get tedious. For example: The grenade kit alone is a buttonsmashing mess in which you have to control the camera, throw ground-targeting aes and while not running in the thief, a wall or off a cliff.

But it is SO rewarding if you get it right…
and that applies to a lot of stuff the engineer does.

Is the Eng the ‘best’ class in GW2? No.
Is really fun to play? Yes, and then some.

The best class is the Mesmer, nobody can contest that. Now, to like it… That’s another story.

Depends on what part of the content you’re looking at.

Engineers are one of the harder classes to level, middle of the road in dungeons and WvW and strong in tPvP ( only a very limited range of builds is viable there, but that applies to most classes ).

To me, I don’t think there’s a “best class”. There’s just, “I know how to play this class like a boss and I enjoy doing it”.

I like it, but it is incredibly frustrating getting nerfed into only using a few builds after every patch. Engineers were a lot more fun at release.

Ok, I can’t leave it at that. It’s the most fun I’ve had playing any profession in GW2. We’re versatile, dynamic, and under-appreciated. Sometimes underestimated to. I’ve read many a post about Engis rolling others in PvP because they weren’t taken seriously until it was too late.

Overall when looking to all the aspects of the game, PvE, PvP and WvW the engineer has the potential to be the best profession. I say potentially because it is not an easy class to play or learn. The learning curve is steep but the ceiling is very high.

Funny thing about me playing engie is, I underestimate everyone else.

I have only played thief, warrior, necro, a tiny bit of guardian, and engineer and engineer is quickly emerging as my favorite class… for spvp, which is pretty much all I do, it does lack in build diversity currently – but the mechanics like kit swapping are really fun. I feel like with some smart changes it could become very well rounded with a lot of fun options (hoping for viable multi-kit builds in the future).

This is entirely dependent on what you want to do. Pistol/Pistol offers excellent condition damage. Change the second pistol out for a shield for some control and support. P/P P/S also offers two sigils versus Rifle’s single.

Rifle is best for direct damage (power) builds, and offers some degree of control as well. (Don’t underestimate that net shot).

If you plan on playing engineer, please don’t forget that kits more or less equate to another weapon set/skill. Many people don’t understand why Engineer has no weapon swap. It’s because we already have potential access to up to as many as 20 (not including medkit) weapon skills at any time, and that doesn’t even count the utility belt skills.

Multikit builds have suffered nerfs recently, regrettably. But kits are still fairly essential to almost any engineer.

You’re in luck with those three classes. If you’ve got a handle on the Engineer, those three will make it seem like you can mash your hands up and down on the keyboard and still win (Thief specifically in WvW, Guard and Mesmer everywhere). For weapon set, I use a pistol and shield for dual sigils, depending on my setup at the time. I almost never see them though, since kits are the way to go.

Engineer is the worst class of all of them, its fun to play, but as a Viable option in all aspects of the game no chance..

As i said its basic fun in PvE..

The last days I’ve been PUG’ing my way in dungeons, didn’t say a word and people were like sorry that Engies had to be designed this way. It’s mostly all potential, and poor design.

To me, the largest problem with the Engineer is the lack of versatility.
“WTF! Engineers are the most versatile!”
Well, let me explain.

I’m playing an alt and have my traits set a certain way. I need to swap out to another weapon and skill bar set for the encounter in PvE or WvW, but it will gain ZERO benefit from my current traits, no matter what I try substituting. Oh well, I’ll just do it and see.

That scenario plays out a lot if you are that type of player, that swaps for the situation. (or, you go a step further and just re-spec by talking to your trainer).

On my alts, I feel less penalized than on my Engineer. My Engineer feels like it is balanced based on what the top tPvP players are doing, so if I’m not min/maxed with my stats and traits and skills and sigils and runes all aligning, I’m going to be doing everything slower and weaker. But my alts can feel like they are in the wrong stat gear, the wrong traits, but my skills were still useful.

Swapping to Flame Thrower, without buffing it, feels worthless.
Ditto Tool Kit.
Elixir Gun only feels nice if I’m devoting my entire time to cleansing others.
My own Rifle and Pistols feel like everything is doing auto-attack damage….
(again, speaking of times when you are wanting to use the versatility of the skills but haven’t been able to buff them toward min/max)

Bomb Kit and Grenade Kit are able to be useful without any traits. I mean, you are either fighting the AI, and they are just too easy if you keep kiting, or in PvP, you are doing the same kiting with 360 degree attacks. Even hitting weak, you still feel the use.

There is a skill cap with Engineer not in how you play it (again, my opinion) but with what sigils, runes, stats, traits, and skills you choose to bring (theory-crafting and number crunching as opposed to skill choice and reaction times). Then you lock yourself into that and “have fun”. We can do some great things when going for niche builds, but I feel so locked in that I find myself thinking how I could be on my alt and just switching to another weapon…. If I pick a loose build that allows me more freedom to swap around, I find myself obviously weaker than my peers.

Now, if you aren’t prone to “the grass is always greener”, then you won’t make those comparisons between professions. Or, if you love grenades or bombs, you aren’t going to see many problems either.

The best class is the one you have the most enjoyment with. For me, I’m tied between Guardian, Ele, and Necro. The Engineer and Ranger are the ones I wish I enjoyed the most. They have what I want on paper, but “meh” execution. Maybe when I have more gold to throw around on gear, I’ll be more happy (or if I stick to only PvP).

I find this statement hard to believe, i am a WVW player maining a engineer and with it i earn on average 15 badges a hour, 20-30 on a good night dying no more than once or twice a hour. In my personal experience none of my other lvl80 could perform this well

I don’t think it’s the best class, but it is a lot of fun. If I had to choose between my level 80 mesmer (who’s kinda-sorta my main) and my level 80 engineer, I’d probably choose the engineer.

For the last few weeks, I’ve been using the engineer, equipped with perma-swiftness and a flamethrower, to grind crafting materials and raise funds. He’s been brilliant. He moves fast, hits hard and deals with groups of enemies much better than my mesmer. With a little practice, he even does well against veterans, champions and legendaries.

Now I’ve started swapping him in for my mesmer during my guild’s dungeon and fractal runs. The results are great. Not only does he do well on his own, he also makes the rest of the group much stronger.

On the downside, there are certain engineer builds that really bother my hands in a carpal-tunnel, repetitive stress sort of way. The HGH build that a lot of players love is one of them. If you’re prone to repetitive stress injuries, then a (potentially) super-clicky profession like the engineer may not be a great choice.

I have 8 level 80s, one in each class. There is no ‘best’ class. What there is, is the class that works best for what role you like to fill.

Yeah, I have similar issue. My left hand is partially paralyzed from some nerve damage I sustained a few years ago, so the Function keys are difficult to reach and I don’t have the fast-click handspeed or dexterity to run a ‘high-click’ build like the HGH engineer or the D/D elementalist.

But I do what I can do and still enjoy both classes, even if I can’t be the king of key-mashing.

I suppose this hits the nail right on the head. Wouldn’t play it either if it directly was part of the “cool” classes like Warriors, Guardians and Mesmers. (Thief not being included due to poor PvE, but remains close due to the whole fantasy of dark shadow ninja assassins).

You may eventually know what to expect from most of classes, and most of them don’t even know what to expect from us.
