Is the engineer pvp or pve?
Currently, I think most people would say we are better suited for PvP, with a few naysayers, although overall we are not anywhere near the top professions, but we can at least provide some tools and skills in PvP that are not as useful in PvE.
From what I read on the forums, Engineer is difficult to play in PvE dungeon settings.
They’re decent in both. But there are issues that you have to overcome to really shine in both. That said; since PvE is easier…
It’s a PvE class

That’s what I’m seeing that they waited too late to separate the pve pvp coding so pve was definitely broken in the process I’d use the pvp options personally because pvp seems to be the only place where there are more then 2 builds available that work.
Looking at the consensus of this forum, I’d say that Engineer is doing reasonably well in WvWvW and world PvE but quite poorly in sPvP and Dungeons.
While there are examples of individuals who report the exact opposite of one or all of the above, the majority appear to reflect it as generally accurate.

The general consensus does align with what binidj said above. Just remember that like in most class forums in any MMO the situation is often greatly exaggerated. Dungeons are an issue for many of the classes because a select few are awesome, but we have couple of very useful builds. sPvP is always a contest on the forums of trying to solicit for buffs and peg others with nerfds, but again we have a couple of great builds and some decent variety in there. That said, we have a lot of broken skills and traits either in viability or even usage. Most other classes are in the same boat for that, but we might have it a little more extreme. There is some truth to what everyone in this consensus, but don’t let the negatives scare you away. I personally play tPvP and hotjoin PvP quite often and I most often prefer my Engineer.
To answer the title question, we do both.

Dungeons are only an issue because they are aggressively unfun. I’m not having many problems at all with my Engineer in open world PvE, 90 deaths in 200 hours is a better ratio than any of my friends playing other professions.

That just means you try to jump off cliffs less. :P
Seriously, nobody should have a problem in open world PvE once they get familiar with how their class works. Sure it’s hard to solo champions or aggro a bunch of mobs that are 5 levels higher than you. Of course some class will have a lot easier time doing it (warriors), but if you learn enough about how to play your class you should be fine and have no reasons to complain.
Engineers are a bit limited in dungeons however, but more so in pug groups. If you join pug groups, they only want dps and the ability to speed through dungeons. Engineers aren’t a very good damage class until you have tried everything and optimized how you dish out damage. Even then your damage wouldn’t be anything to write home about.

Haha also the -50% falling damage trait is helpful.
All classes are made to be PvP and PvE. There are skills and traits that are better used in either, but players learn to create builds and fine tune them to make them more viable for certain situations.
WvW, sPvP, and PvE are all different situations, and require every class to act differently.

Loudmouth, lousy PvPer, and mediocre PvEer.

Dungeons have only ever been a major issue for me when I ran with pugs and there are numerous reasons why this may be both class related and not. When running with the guild, on teamspeak, and communicating there are few if any problems. Upper level fractals are an issue but those are an issue for players in general not just class dependent. In a game where there are not supposed to be specific roles and the “trinity is broken” we have seen people naturally aggregate into dps and defensive builds. This is more of an attempt at tanking than being defensive in a healing type of way. This has left the engineer in a precarious situation because they are neither the hardest hitting or the hardest hit taking class so we fill neither of the popular roles.
General PVE you should be able to succeed at nearly everything with the eng. I actually would much rather play then eng because the content remains playable even after 80. With my warrior I can run in and annihilate everything in pve without having to even use much more than my autoattack.
