Kit switching deals confusion damage?
Seems a little overkill to me, maybe confusion is just too good as it is at the moment but that damage really adds up quickly compared to other classes, is this intended?
same goes for Ele and attunement swapping i think.
Wait, what? How does kit swapping do this?
Of course it deals Confusion damage and yes, I believe, it is intended. Equipping a kit is considered an action use and therefore it is subjective to any and all other restrictions AND benefits that come with skill use.
It is not all bad that kit switching can trigger confusion damage. A popular tactic is that Engineers can take great advantage of the “on heal” trigger in a lot of rune sets with the Med Kit to stack boons and turn their heal slot into something more useful than just a heal. I am sure there may be other benefits as well.

Equipping and de-equipping does confusion damage.

I’m assuming that is when you use a certain run set, yes? Because I haven’t noticed it doing that…ever.

Eh I’m using nightmare runes and killed a mesmer, was spamming kit switch after he died and the lingering confusion damaged me every switch.

It does damage to yourself to swap when you have confusion on you. With kit refinement, it used to deal double damage, and still deals double to eles when they swap to an attunement with their skill activation on attunement change trait. It also deals colossal damage to engineers or eles in tornado form.

This. I notice it, it does the same on my Ele as well.
Oohh….you mean it deals confusion damage to us. Right. Well….didn’t we know that already? I mean toggling a kit on or off is technically a utility skill.

Right, I don’t think it’s really a huge problem. Just trying to clear things up

Dropping a bundle = utility skill? :P
And this is why i find it annoying when ANet devs thinks it all fine and dandy to have mobs drop half a pile of confusion on characters.
Especially as PVE confusion has twice the damage of PVP confusion to account for lower mob action frequency.
do you have speedy kits? maybe that’s what triggers it?
Technically it counts as a skill use, and in this case its a disadvantage. But bare in mind it can in some cases also count as an advantage.
Essentially you have a very low cooldown weaponswap. And equiping the medkit counts as a Heal in a lot of cases when it comes to triggering effects (like runes or traits)
I think a far bigger issue is that traits like Evasive Powder Keg trigger Confusion. If you have any passing interest in any trait in the Explosives line, you’re Dodge will now trigger Confusion aswell due to that trait.
Could have sworn dodges always trigger confusion.

For us, yes. Arena Net hates engineers, to the point that I honestly believe the profession was thrown together at the last minute simply because people on guru wouldn’t shut up about wanting an engineer/turret class. (For the record I was against engineers from the beginning, and only started playing the class because I was “betrayed” by the design of the thief.)

Only if you have an “on-dodge” trait like evasive powder keg. Same is true for all professions.

Come now, that’s a bit melodramatic. Yes, engineers were designed late and the game launched a bit too early, thus the bugs list. Remember that there are positive things to being able to kitswap any time you want as well, such as being the best profession for using on-swap sigils (because you will always trigger them essentially at the cooldown) or being the only profession that can choose any autoattack at any time.
The only kit abilities that remove conditions are medkit 4 and elixir gun 5. If you have high confusion stacks on you and you’re not trying to remove them, you’ve got a problem. If you are trying to remove them, the worst that could happen is you could be hit two additional times by confusion.

I use elixirs for condition removal. Not a big fan of the med kit really.
That said I am honestly starting to hate this profession. I’ve already rerolled once when I realized (too late) that the thief simply wasn’t what I wanted in a profession, and the engineer started out fun, but it is getting increasingly frustrating due to all the problems. If Arena Net continues to mistreat us as they have, I’m likely to just give up on the game entirely for a while.
I hate heavy armor, and from a role play perspective my main is has the magical ability of a rusty toaster oven, so that just leaves the adventurer professions. Thief is the best fit thematically, but quickly went from fun, to frustrating, to infuriating. The engineer likewise started out fun, but is becoming more and more “meh” every time we’re ignored or nerfed in an update. And ranger….well ranger was pretty meh from the start. I’ve been here since the per-purchase beta events, never missed a beta, or a stress test, and got the entire head start to enjoy the game, and now I’m running out of options for professions I enjoy, and honestly don’t really want to stick around to see what class Arena Net ruins next. Heck; in my years with the original Guild Wars I played a ranger, and not only is my preferred play-style with that profession just completely gone here; but the skill types -once trademarks and defining features of the ranger class- don’t even exist anymore.
/sighs
What I wouldn’t give to have just one good preparation on my skill bar….I’d even buy the kitten ed thing out of the gem store.

I believe the tornado shredding itself with confusion has been fixed in a previous patch.
I think they also fixed the dodge skills causing confusion damage, but I haven’t been paying as much attention to those.
As for swapping out of kits, I’m not sure if the same result is observed when using the weapon swap button instead of the utility skill button. I always swap in and out with the utility skill button, but it’s possible that using the weapon swap button may avoid the confusion damage. Of course, that assumes that weapon swap itself doesn’t inflict confusion damage, of which I’m not sure.

That was the point—the only kits you would ever really swap to while you have confusion on you would be med kit or elixir gun, and those only if you actually like them and want them in your build. I was trying to say it’s not a huge deal.

Not sure what to recommend there. I’m not much of a role-player, but I can see how the engineer would be a bit tough to role-play.
What type of content are you looking for improvements in? It’s true that engineer aesthetic issues have gone untouched—it’s not a big deal for me but I can see that it could be for you. Are there gameplay/balance issues that are frustrating? If so, for PvE/WvW/PvP? I really have no idea what exactly is causing frustration for you, so I’m not sure how to respond.

The biggest issue is really the fact that Arena Net has a habit of ignoring our issues. Turrets are really buggy, but I hate turrets anyway. Elixirs are too RNG based, but I only use the ones with guaranteed effects. Our weapons just flat out suck, but I mostly use kits. Aside from being ignored and left to rot in balance limbo the two main issues I have with the engineer are that our actually weapons are among the least interesting and useful weapons in the entire game, forcing us to rely heavy on kits, and that said reliance on kits has all but destroyed the game’s intended “cosmetic progression.”
Kit damage has nothing to do with weapon damage, and kit skins replace both back skins and weapon skins. So there is literally zero reason to bother with getting new weapons at all with this class, and while I am not particularly focused on progression, and don’t too interested in getting a legendary right now, it does get pretty boring to always use the same stuff and simply have nothing to shoot for. No goal in the game, even a cosmetic one. About a month ago I went ahead and blew some saved up skill points on forging a Mystic Rifle….and regretted it within ten minutes. I was just too bored and figured “eff it, I’m going to get me one of those cool high-end weapons” but then went back to just never using it.
I like kits, but I don’t like being forced to use only kits. But honestly I just don’t have a choice. Given the lack of my old play-style in this game the only one I’ve really been able to get into is a hybrid damage/support build, and the only thing that can actually do that is a flamethrower/elixir gun build. I fell in love with the engineer because of the versatility and dynamic skill changing we get from kits, so without them there is little reason to play an engineer. But after nearly a year with the profession kit swapping has just gotten old and boring. I want a new and exciting build, but that won’t happen because every other build in the game lacks that all important versatility and is way too dependent on our pathetic weapon selection.
So yeah, there you go.
I don’t like being left out of GW2’s cosmetic progression because of my choice of profession.
I don’t like being forced to use kits because our actual weapons suck.
I don’t like how not using kits pigeonholes us into such limited builds.
And most of all I really don’t like how Arena Net just sees us as “only 10%” and completely ignores all of our problems, large and small.
etc.
Fair enough. If you don’t really enjoy playing engineer, I’m not going to try to argue with you and say that you ought to enjoy it. I can’t deny that cosmetic issues have not been addressed for the profession and that PvE builds (I assume that’s what we’re talking about) may feel boring compared to professions that have much more cool-looking animations, etc.
To be fair, your requirements (must not use any magic or wear heavy armor) are a bit strict. To put it in perspective, browsing a class list of another MMO with 24 classes, I was only able to find 4 that fit your requirements, and none of them were very aesthetically appealing either (dwarves or orc-type creatures). Your issue may be with RPGs in general.
Edit: but I do disagree that Anet has “ignored” all problems: another kind poster made a list of well over 100 positive changes to the engineer and the Oct. 15th patch alone will include a lot of fixes for your specific complaints (removal of RNG from elixirs, fixes to turrets, even a baby step toward making cosmetics more desirable for engineer).
