Ok, so I took a very long break from the Game and have come back to play… However my lvl 80 engineer decked out in all Pirate gear has Lost all the stats and now I have to choose what type of gear it is, apothocary, knight, ravager etc.

Any advice for a back to basics engineer who does mostly pve?

Berserker – everything else is not viable in PvE as an Engineer.

If you PvE, berserker.

If you WvW, you’ve got a lot of options depending on your build.

no, if for some reason he gets it in his head he has to have a condi build over a zerk build, rabids gonna be more damage than dire, settler, magi, carrion.. and idk how it compares to rampager when food is factored in. cuz lots of people get it in their heads that condi engi is good and get all single minded. and engis arent particularly cumbersome in rabid gear. …but zerk is better for the party cuz you wont be stepping on some other poor sap’s toes.

If the option’s there, get Celestial. Otherwise Berserker for PvE (or Rampager’s if you’re set on conditions, but it’s unfortunately just not as viable). Or just get Rabid and do some PvP.

The word ‘viable’ is wildly misused here, but Berserker is the best IF you know when and how to dodge properly. If not it is easily the worst set you can have. I just hate grouping with people who saw on the forums somewhere how everyone should use Berserker no matter what, but they don’t understand how and when to dodge so they’re on the floor 90% of the time.

Honest you can use anything in PvE, whether you like conditions or not. PvE is far more about understanding the mechanics of any individual encounter (including the times you need to dodge) than it is about the gear you’re wearing. More toughness/vitality (Soldier) gives you more room for error. More power/precision/crit (Berserker) let’s you kill stuff faster, so the encounter lasts shorter.

I’m not trying to be “that guy”, Berserker gear at this point in the game is objectively the best as long as you play it properly. I just also wanted to say that if you have something other than Berserker gear you’re not doing it wrong either.
