Hey guys. I am thinking of making an engineer my next character. Started with ranger, found out they’re awful, and moved to guardian. Now that she is finished it’s time for an engineer. So I have some noobish questions for you long term engineers out there. Thanks!

First off, this is for PvE only. I don’t like sPvP or tPvP. I occasionally WvW, but so rarely that we won’t consider it. This is for dungeons and world exploration mostly.

What kind of build would you guys/gals say is most beneficial to an engineer in a guild group dungeon setting? I have been eyeballing the grenade kit and Explosives line because I found grenades very fun to play. ( I have a Razer Naga so aiming the grenades is actually kinda fun!). I made one and played with it in the mists so I think it could be fun. But lately I have heard that grenades got a major nerf and that elixirs are the most useful by a large margin. So what do you experienced folks think? I’ve heard a lot of HGH and elixirs being awesome, but I want feedback from the folks who have been using it for a while,

The only reason I ask this instead of doing it myself is that my playtime is very limited, and I unfortunately do not have time to make a build and get the gear only to find out it is very subpar in a group setting. I need to have a clear goal at the start.

Funny thing, Grenades are still used in the HGH builds and if you don’t have one, you’re not playing it right. So yea, have fun with that.

Don’t listen to people that tell you HGH/Grenade is the only Engineer build.

The great thing about Engis is that we’re super versatile and have some really fun toys. All of them work too. Every day at least 2 new posts appear on the forums with someone posting their newest build and generally the responses are that people try them and enjoy them. Which means that the Engi community tends to experiment with their profession and can have success doing so. Also, it means there are plenty of viable ways to build an Engi.

I know I haven’t given you any help in starting your new Engineer. But I want you to move ahead being confident with your choice and have fun with it.

There are many good Engineer builds. I have never played HGH Grenadier and I never intend to. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is not my idea of fun.

I agree with Dimes in regards to HGH.

I’m a Norm engineer and I only ever play PvE. You dont see too many engis around, especially where I am so its good to throw down the occassional turret, med kit etc etc and help others in your team.
