Maybe I'm a little frustrated....
I feel your pain, I see for example, elementalists or thiefs in wvw able to escape while downed by just running/shadowstepping to their group, making them so hard to kill and it makes me envious. As an engineer who cant do much while downed It frustrates me too.
But we gotta stay calm and hope our engies get some attention soon.

I’m not raging. I simply take the opportunity to refresh my beverage when I’m downed because I know there’s essentially nothing I can do to save myself. The only real option is the Boobytrap skill, although it’s unusual to see it charge half-way.
December is supposed to provide a large number of balance features. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
If they only would change the #1 attack to do decent damage instead of the random chill and weakness condition.
Skill #2 is all right but it’s useless in downed vs downed.
You can’t pull in downed players to hit them with #3, which is our big damage spell.
I’ve gotten into a lot of downed vs downed fights recently (trying out a new build) and I’ve gotten frustrated with our abilities in some occasions.
Thieves and wars simply outdamage us. By a lot.
Mesmers are ridiculous when downed.
The fact that clones still keep running around and the continuous confusion spam make their downed state the most powerful at the moment.
The only class I could took out in downed vs downed was a guardian, but that was hardly fair because I could still plant multiple bombs around his body before I went down myself.
Haven’t had the honour yet of fighting downed vs downed with other classes.
So yeah, I understand the frustration.
All we can do is wait. I’m sure they’ll get around to tweaking all the classes downed abilities.
I do like the system, despite it’s flaws.
Eng downed skills are actually quite awesome.
In a downed vs downed fight yeah… I can understand the frustration.
a) you’re downed and he’s low and drops to downed, he still has more hp and will probably beat you
b) he’s downed and you drop to downed, well best you can do is try not to get to this point, because you’re giving him the advantage.
c) you both kinda drop at the same time, same as b)
P.S. if you are awesome you can throw elixir R right before you drop. I’ve had this save me so many times.
Why can’t we throw our leftover explosives? Why can’t we activate a cloaking device? Why can’t instead of pulling them to us we use a repulsor wave to push them away?
It would make so much more sense.
About the explosives thing, why not throw our mines since they are useless as a skill even as a toolbelt skill they are useless so we might as well throw them directly at the enemy while downed for an AOE attack.

They should make our downed skill1 into an explosive like skill3.
Make skill3 into a turret set up that heals us enough that if we used skill4, we’ll come back up really quick even if being attacked by up to 1~2 people. Forcing enemies to re-direct aggro from us to the turret.

I hate the engineer downed state and I just let myself die most of the time.
It is not worth my time to do anything else.
Unless if someone is especially fail you cannot interrupt them twice with the 2/3. The cast on the 3 is to long.
The damage from the 3 is nice but you’ll be stomped / killed before you can use it.
The 1 skill throw junk is worthless. Half it’s dps is split between a RNG condi, which gives 1 stack of bleed, and a weak power hit.
Even glass cannon you’ll be lucky if it crits 1k versus 2-3k hits from other professions.
The whole skill set is a crap shoot.
I cannot count the number of times I have had a close fight with a thief, mesmer, warrior, or ele, where I have downed them, been downed, and then been killed by them in their downed state, while I hit like a wet noodle and do nothing usefull at all.
Well…you can always reach out and drag another enemy to your side to hasten your death, lol. Not sure what the devs were thinking with that downed skill.

My strategy when downed involves using #2 to bring the mob closer to me so that I die faster, as mentioned above. This way I can at least get a faster respawn.
Honestly I would happy enough with an explosion that blasted our corpse away like the rocket boots, faceplant stun and all. As it stands engineers really, really don’t want to be caught downed.
Though honestly that’s probably by design. If you want flawless or BS escape methods, you roll a thief or a mesmer respectively. If you’d rather throw all your escapes into active living abilities, then both engineer and guardian should be up your alley.
NOOOOOOOO, what we really need is a “Imma gonna take off my coat revealing a demolition warbands worth of explosives duct-taped all over my body and run kamikaze in to the middle of your zerg” skill. Just yes.
